Have been exchanging messages with Sara Sch... who is also a gg grand daughter of George. Do you by any chance know her? It would be helpful if we were all on the same page. She's done a lot of on-hands research in the courthouse and library. I've done a little more on-line research. My e-mail address is colbeca(a)verizon.net. Am definitely open to sharing information.

There is a Harrison Colbert buried outside of Schuline, Illinois. He died at the age of 18 in 1845, so would have been born around 1827.
The only "Bert" Colbert I know of was Ambrose Bertram Colbert, son of John Colbert, George's youngest son. Bert was his nickname on the Island. Much later though, because he fought in WW II!

Andrew Jackson Colbert was married in Randolph County to Martha jane Ireland. In the 1850 census her brother is living there with his wife and a Martha Pillars Colbert. Martha married Bert Colbert in Randolph county. Are these people related to George? A Harrison Colbert also was there in 1825 do you have any of these people in your family
Shirley

See my message to roezart - it looks like we're all descendants of different children of George and Marie. I do know that at some point, Samuel Bruce Colbert was only 12 when George died and after his death he went to live with Laura and Sigmund, where he learned the carpentry trade. Do you have a copy of Laura's birth certificate which should show where her parents were born or her baptismal certificate? George drowned, and Marie remarried to Louis Buyatt (spelling can be different) at which time she may have started going by Louise, which was her middle name.

Thanks for the info. I live in California, but my father (Bruce Colbert) was raised in Chester, Illinois. Years ago I did some research in Chester and so I too have a copy of George and Marie's wedding certificate. I also did some research on census records (before the internet) and I have a record of a 22 year old George Colbert living with the William Gant household. Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the year. It did show his birthplace as Illinois. My mother tried to locate the birth certificate of Samuel Colbert (1868) but there was no record. I have a copy of his obituary which mentions his parents and the death of George. I'll try to scan it in and e-mail to you. Do Phillip's records show George as being born in Virginia? I think it's interesting that you have descendants of 3 of George's children trying to find out where he was from and none of us are having much luck.

Have heard the story from my family of him drowning in the river. He was known for being a strong swimmer, his coat fell in the river, he jumped in to get it, got caught in an undertow and drowned. Phillip was my great grandpa. Census records list George as being an independent farmer. I have his marriage record and Phillip's birth and baptismal records. George and Marie were married and Phillip was baptized on the same day. George is listed as nonbaptized. The family story was that George was an Indian. My dad and grandpa had said this and my cousin Nick (one of Sam's grandchildren) said he had always been told the same thing. I don't know if you are from around these parts, but you can find information at the county courthouse in Chester and at the Archdiocese in Belleville. That's where we got our information, aside from oral history. There's also the Kaskaskia Island church picnic in August. Haven't heard what weekend it is yet... Also, the Chickasaw Colber!
ts weren't from Alabama-- they were from the Carolinas and Virginia.
Hope some of my information helps you.

George Colbert and Marie Louise Barutel are also my great-great grandparents through their daughter Laura Emily Colbert who married Sigmund Brinkmann. I have loads of information on Marie Louise's ancestry but nothing on George. Which census lists his birth as Virginia? because I thought I'd seen it listed a Illinois in at least one. I'll look it up. Would love to talk to you and see what information we can share. My phone is 631-603-7639. or write back but I'm not really great with this.
