http://groups.yahoo.com/ will get you to yahoo groups. You may need to set up a yahoo account. Then you can go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Calvert_Genealogy/
You can try to go there first...to the specific group. It has been a long time since I have done this. Usually you ask to be included...and then have to be accepted. Should be no problem.
They have a lot of info in the files area of the Calvert group. Apparently Colbert changed from Calvert with some branches.
Lots of the members of this group have had their DNA done and are using it and the forum to connect to others.
Let me know if you have a problem. You can also reach me direct at pogosbill(a)aol.com

They are not familiar, but I can always forward this to one other who may more about our Colbert lineage. My maternal grandmother was a Colbert and we know very little about that part of the family.
Thanks for the reply. Also, please forward the link to the Calvert message board on Yahoo.

You might want to try to join the Calvert Forum. It is a Yahoo Group that
is researching Calverts (Colbert is a variation). Many in this group
have had their DNA taken and are using this to help with the research.

My husband's Colbert line came down from NC/SC area around Rutherford NC/Spartenburg SC into Lumpkin about 1840...then to Dawson, Cherokee and later Walker Counties. I have recently had my husband's DNA sent in and am trying to connect the dots more on that. You might want to become involved in the Calvert (a surname forum) in the Yahoo Groups and see if anyone there can link to you. Some of the surnames that married into our Colbert line were Hills, Covington, Sutton, Hudlow. Do these appear anywhere in your searching? (

I am in search of information about the Colbert family lineage. Any information you can provide would be great.
My branch of the Colberts started from the Crawford County area in Georgia, but may have originated in other areas.
Please forward any information you think may help in my efforts.

My John Colbert was born in April 1858 somewhere around 116th Street and Ave. A (East Harlem). He married Mary Ashe of County Meath Ireland and they had 5 children - three survived: Mary, William and James.
We don't have any Edwards in our family - at least none that I have seen so far.

Garrett Colbert's parents (John Colbert and Mary Coleman) were both from Ireland, probably County Waterford. John came to NY in 1843 and Mary sometime between 1848 and 1852.
Their children stayed in New York. Garrett Colbert's children eventually moved to Queens.

Hi,Suzanne,
Your father needs to do the testing for the Y genetic lines of the Colbert family. They male genetics are pretty stable and carry down with few mutuations or changes over a long period of time so it is with him you will learn about family genetic lines. Some of the newer tests carry an MdDNA test along with this Y test however, and that gives insight into his female lineage also, but those can go far, far back in time, but some insight into present female lines, like his parent, etc., may prove to be very helpful. You can take a female genetic test, MtDNA but you won't find out what you want to know about the males. Female genetics are influenced by all those female ancestors from the past and they just don't stay stable like the male genetic markers over a long period of time. That is all a bit simplistic, but basically the reason for your needing to have the testing done on the oldest male in your family line if possible.
I am a adminstrative helper with a Calvert Genealogy Project group, and we have had some amazing results. Why don't you write me at sfrohock(a)msn.com so we can talk more about this and perhaps share some of our family information for if you are no further back than what you say, some of this may be already researched and known -- yet the genetics assures that what you know is right too, and gets you further back usually. I can also give you some links to help you better understand and perhaps convince your father that his privacy can be preserved and perhaps allay some of his problems by helping him to better understand how, why, and what is done, etc.
Thanks so much for your inquiry.
Sandy

Hi Sandy,
Thanks for your message re: Colbert subgroup. I'm new to this Ancestry.com site and genealogy in general. I was interested in possibly getting the cheek swab to get more granular information on my connection to my Colbert side. But from what I've read, the services for the DNA trace need a sample from a male member if the trace comes from the father's side?
My father's side is the Colbert side I want to research. I'm sure of the lineage only back to my dad's great grandfather. My dad is still living, but not too keen on providing the cheek swab. He is skeptical and concerned with privacy issues.
If I provide one myself, would the DNA from me tell me about my father's Colbert side?
Also, in what capacity are you involved with this subgroup? I don't quite understand if it's a privat (for-profit) company advertising on Ancestry or is it a non-profit, research endeavor?
Thanks again for your time.
Suzanne

Yes, I am very much involved with Colbert surname subgroup with FTDNA. How can I help you? I should have read the old posts before going here, so I need to check back as to what was posted. However, we are learning a great deal with the DNA and would like to have others participate.
Sandy

Are you still involved in that?
Thanks in advance.

George Colbert is my great great grandfather, also. I am descended from his first-born son, Philippe. We have traced him as coming from Virginia, but the search has been a dead end from there.
