I was told my father was a direct descendant of Jean Baptiste Colbert.
His name was Lawrence Bernard Styvaert. His Grandmother who was a Colbert, emigrated and married a Styvaert here possibly in Illinois.
Reportedly her name was Mary, though not sure where that information comes from. They had a large family, perhaps 9 children.
One of the kids was Frank Styvaert, my grandfather, who died when my father was 14. My dad was born in 1913. He was married to my grandmother, Nettie, who married twice after Frank died. I cannot remember her maiden name.
The story is that when my Dad was 6 years old, the Colbert Family Granddame came to America to ask the family to
come back to France. My dad and uncle Earl were the last in the line to inherit property deeded to Jean Baptiste Colbert (family?) for his service to the Crown. The property would go back to the French government if an heir did not step forward.
My grandmother refused to allow her two sons to return to France. It was circa 1919.
Also researched the family crest. I was told that 6 generations of Colbert had the same shield, a phenomenon in the history of heraldry. Normally each successive head of family would change the symbolism on the crest to match his own particular characteristics. For six generations, the symbolism remained unchanged.
This enduring Shield had a serpent, and other symbolism representing characteristics of secrecy, generosity, wealth and intelligence, according to the proprietor of a Shield Shop in San Pedro California who took it from very old books.
