THANKS SO MUCH TO EACH OF YOU for the information!! There's a wealth of documentation on the original Colbert gang, but there's a good bit of information that is conflicting. I appreciate the clarifications that you've already investigated. It helped me a great deal!!

James Colbert was a trader among the Chickasaw, and was sometimes called "James Logan Colbert" even though no documentated evidence has yet proven that "Logan" was his middle name.
Family tradition states that he came from Scotland aboard the ship PRINCE OF WALES to Georgia in 1736, but his name is NOT found on the passenger lists.
He once stated that he had been born in the colonies, and a long time interperter for the Chickasaw, Malcolm McGee, stated that Colbert was from one of the Carolina's.
In the book ADAIR'S HISTORY, on page 398, James Adair states that James Logan Colbert was born about 1721, and the he had "lived among the Chikkasaw from his childhood, and speaks their language even with more propriety than the English".
James Logan Colbert was married three times:
1st to a full blood Chickasaw, by whom he had:
1 daughter - name unknown, died young.
2 William, born about 1750. Became a Chickasaw chief. Was also called Chooshemataha, Pyaheggo, and Billy Colbert. Married to Jesse Moniac (who was also called Wayther, and whose mother was a Creek). He later married a woman named Mimey.
James Logan Colbert's 2nd marriage was , also a full blood Chickasaw he had:
3 George, born 1764, became a Chickasaw chief, was also called Tootemastubbe. Often refered to as Colonel George Colbert. Married three times, two of his wives were daughters of Cherokee Chief Doublehead. One of these two women died befotre 1818, the other sister was Salechi. His 3rd wife was Tuskeahookto, who he married in 1834.
4 Levi, born 1759, became a Chickasaw chief, earning the title "Itawamba Mingo". He had a large family. One wife was named Mintahoyo, another was named Ishtemmarharlechar, the 3rd wife was named Schtimmarshashoctay.
5 Joseph, married Elmira Oxberry.
6 Samuel, born 1816 married Rhoda Gunn, they seperated, he later married Lucinda Love.
James Logan Colbert's 3rd marriage was to a mixed blood Chickasaw, by whom he had:
7 James (Jr.), born about 1768, became a Chickasaw chief. He married three times, 1st to Susan James, a Choctaw, 2nd to a Mrs. Frazier, a half blood, 3rd to a full blood Choctaw Nelly.
8 Susan
The Draper Papers indicate that all of James' children were dead by the summer of 1842, with the exception of perhaps one daughter ( Susan Perry).

Thanks so much for the information. I've traced my family back to James Logan Colbert. My great-great grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Colbert (known as Sallie), daughter of James M. Colbert & Mary E. (Atkinson) Colbert, and Sallie married Robert LaSalle Ford. My great grandmother, Ida Mae Ford was one of the children of Sallie Colbert & Robert Ford.
Again, thanks for the help!

There is a lot of information on the James Logan Colbert families on the Internet. If you are new to genealogy, you might just want to start by going to Google and trying search with that name in total, which will get you a lot of links. There are numerous James's. Do you know who Sarah Elizabeth's father or mother was? A James I have been researching in Georgia had a heir(son?) James who wed a Nancy ? , but his birthdate would be earlier than 1821.
Also, I am researching a this James Colbert and Elisha Colbert in Georgia in the late 1700's, who may or may not be connected in some way to the Colbert's you mention. My family ended up in Southern IL in the very early 1800's, yet have traced back to Georgia. I know Colbert's from that area went to Alabama, Louisiana, and elsewhere. The www.CalvertGenealogy.com site also has links that will give you some background and perhaps some help. If memory serves me correctly the Louisiana Colbert's have an early William in there somewhere so Family Search at www.familysearch.com would also give you some leads perhaps. This Family Search, LSD Church, link may not be accurate, but the above would get you there. Also, the Griffin surname crops up with Colbert's in the Georgia area. Check Madison/Franklin/Elbert/Wilkes counties.
Also, hopefully someone with a definite connection will answer you here.
There is something else to consider. My family has done DNA and so far nothing connects us to known surnames, and thus far I do not know of a James Logan Colbert direct male descendant contributor of a DNA sample, which is much needed. There is a link to find out more about that also, which might connect you with others. I know I would love to see a James Logan Colbert known descendant contribute such.
Good luck.

I'm a descendent of James Logan Colbert, also. I've just started researching the family history. My mom prepared a good bit of the history several years ago, and I'm picking up where she left off. I've very interested in any information that you may have.
I set up my Colbert family tree on ancestry.com with a good bit of the information and dates that I have if you want to take a look. My connection is through my great-great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Colbert (1848-1932), daughter of James (1821-?) & Mary E. Colbert (1821-1860). Sallie established residence with her husband, Robert LaSalle Ford, in Ouachita City, Louisiana, where my immediate family still lives.
I'm especially interested in the various James Colbert's. Records indicate three James': James Logan Colbert, James Colbert (probably II or Jr.), and James M. Colbert. I want to locate the records for James Logan Colbert entering the U.S., by what means or the name of the ship, if he came from Scotland?
I would greatly appreciate any help as I am a novice researcher!
