My husband is a Colbert and I have been researching this very difficult line
for a long time and just this year made a breakthrough.
I have a Mary Colbert, daughter of Alexander D. Colbert and Mary ?.
Alexander came to GA just before 1840..*see 1840 Census) .probably from SC. He
first lived in Lumpkin County. He had two wives...both named Mary...the
second was Mary g "Polly" Covington. By the first wife he had eight
children...one was named Mary.
Mary was born around 1847 because she is 7 years old in the 1850 Lumpkin
County, GA census. Their name is mispelled in the census...it looks like
Colum or possibly Colburn. But it is them..
Alexander was killed (married to the second wife by now) in the Civil War.
I believe it is possible that the first wife died in childbirth and that the
second wife was the sister of a neighbor. My husband's line is from the
second wife.
Powell, Alfred, Cyntha, Sarah (Louisa), Jane (Arbella), Mary, Robert and
Benjamin are the suspected children of the first wife.
Powell was also killed in the Civil War...Alfred taken prisoner then later
fighting for the North.
Martha, John, Elisha, Jesse, and Annie are the children from the second
wife.
My husband's line is from Elisha...and he mostly lived in Walker County.
I would love it if this information led us to work together to solve this
great mystery family.

I have a John Colbert who came from Waterford County Cork to Baltimore Maryland in 1867. He was 12 years old and the son of Robert Colbert and Ellen Foley. He later moved to Washington DC and married Anne McDonough in 1875. I saw the John Colbert's from Waterford so thought I would post mine.

I believe my Colberts are originally from Waterford - near Cork. My original immigrant ancestor, John Colbert was born around 1810 and died March 1865. He married Mary Coleman who was from Waterford; they lived in East Harlem, New York. They had several children, but ony 3 survived: Mary, who married George Grossman, my great grandfather, John who married Mary Nash, and Garret who married Jane Daley.
I don't know if John had any brothers or sisters who also emigrated.
Looking for any one who might be connected to this family or who knows about Colbert families in Waterford.
Mary
