Neath Petty Sessions: Mary Colbert V Dennis Sweeney
Date: 7th March 1862 Page 8
The Cambrian Newspaper
Article Summary: Neath Petty Sessions: Mary Colbert V Dennis Sweeney
Lively Charlotte Street
Dennis Sweeney, an athletic son of Errin, was charged with having assaulted Mary Colbert, an inhabitant of the green sod.
The assault was committed by the fracas between the complainant and defendant's daughter, the former indulging in calling the latter ill names, to which the defendant's daughter chose not to submit. A combat ensued, and the belligerents coming ultimately to close quarters, they were found securely moored to each others hair, each by the others undergoing severe penance. The defendant, by the complainant's version, came into her house and knocked her between the cradle and the cupboard with his fist. Defendant's version, however, went so far as to contradict this, and he insisted that he only parted the female warriors. He took his daughter by the shoulders, pushed her out of the house, persuading her to go home by the application of a kick: - The case was dismissed.

Article Summary:
Daniel Eagan (an Irish boy), 13, aided by a boy called COLBERT, attemps to obstruct line from Cwmavon to Port Talbot.
ABERAVON
Attempts to upset railway trains. An Irish boy, named Daniel Eagan, about 13 years of age living at Aberavon, was apprehended by Sergeant Lougher, and brought before the Neath bench at their Petty Sessions, charged with obstructing the railway running from Cwmavon to Port Talbot. The accused was seen in company with another Irish boy, named Colbert , who also lives at Aberavon, placing large stones on the rail about three feet from the river, close to the weir at the Aberavon Tin Works. The stones were so placed that the upsetting the engine, &c. into the river would inevitably have taken place if the train had encountered the obstacle. Fortunately, this infamous design was providentially frustrated, the boys being observed by the engine driver and the stoker, before they reached the spot. Colbert has been released on giving evidence implicating his companion. He states that Eigan was so enraged at being refused a ride in the train on its downward journey that he swore "he w!
ould serve them out as they come back" and then placed the stones as described. He was committed for ****(poss. trial)at the ***ing Quarter Sessions. The scene of confusion which then ensued was frightful, and consisted of yelling, blessing, praying and weeping the mother of the boy with arms extended rushed to him and clasped him tightly in her embrace , besought the "Lord to have mercy on the lad" and begged the Magistrates "not to send him to jail" Immediately they were both ******* removed from the deck to the cells, the boy still clinging to his mother and the father rushing about the Court with frantic gestures. and had to be removed by the Police, who in doing so caught his arm in the door, whilst his friends outside were pulling him away (thinking that he was trying to get in again). The Police inside were pushing the door until the poor fellow screamed. "Oh murther, murther, you're breaking my arms intireley!" but was tendered and accepted for the boy's appearance !
at the Midsummer Quarter Sessions.

Jen L Colbert

I found a letter in a box of old books dated 1956 written to a Mrs Gertrude Colbert of Los Angeles CA. The letter is from "Alma" of Healdsburg CA. The letter is much faded but is referring to the death of their brother "Dwight". If anyone would be interested in this letter, please let me know and I will be more than happy to send it on to you. First come, first serve.
