I am currently pursuing a new Colbert One Name Study in the UK & Ireland regions. I would be interested to hear from anyone with this surname interest, other surname variations will also be included, please contact me if you have different variations: for example: Callbert, Colebert, Coalbert, Callburt, Coleburt, Colburt etc.
Please note I will not be pursuing the Culbert variant as this is already registered with The Guild of One Name Studies, however I will accept some if they can be shown to be linked to other Colbert names & mis-transcribed or mis-spelt in records.
This is a purely personal study & I am not registered with The G.O.O.N.S The website will at first be basic but the site will grow as more contacts are made & eventually this will be of benefit to many.
If you have Colbert links in The UK or Ireland and are interested in being included in this study please contact me via email: colbert-ons(a)ntlworld.com for a questionnaire to be sent to you (word document format).
The website & where data will be published eventually will be www.colbertonenamestudy.com this site should be live soon.
Thank you for your time & happy Colbert researching!

Thought to have family also in Georgia. Any info on any Alfred William

Looking for information for George Robinson Colbert. He probably married a woman named Nellie. George was born Dec 4, 1878 in Beaufort Co, NC. He was probably living in Florida about 1900. Thanks. Tommy
I have been advised that there was a problem with retrieving part of my last message on James Logan Colbet's slave Cesar. So, here is the message with a little changed format:
Does anyone know whether the slave named Cesar who was with Chickasaw trader
and British Officer Captain James Logan Colbert at Colbert's death was the
same person who was:
1) Owned by Natchez planter Stephen Minor,
2) Rented out by Minor to Mississippi Governor Winthrop Sargent as an Indian
interpreter,
3)Involved (by the actions of John Minor) with the
unfortunate Texas filibusterers Philip Nolan and Colonel Peter Ellis Bean in
1801, and
4) Was reported by Lt. Zebulon Pike as living with Spanish Lt. Juan Pedro
Walker in Texas in 1807 when Pike was under detention by the Spanish.
I can document the following connections among Cesar, Colbert, and Natchez :
Cesar was traveling with Captain Colbert when he died in the Creek Nation in
December, 1783 or early January, 1784, as reported to the Spanish by the
great Creek Chief Alexander McGillivray and to Lyman Draper by the long-time
Chickasaw interpreter Malcolm McGee.
McGee informed Draper that Cesar was suspected of having killed Colbert.
(However, that is not known as a fact and Cesar returned to the Chickasaw
Nation to inform them of Colbert's death.
Captain Colbert's son, Chickasaw Chief and U.S. General William Colbert,
took Cesar to Natchez and sold him to Jeptha Higdon sometime between 1783
and April 28, 1794, when Natchez court documents report the sale in
connection with proceedings related to collection of a debt involving
Higdon, Charles Lucas and Benjamin Belk.
I can document following information about Cesar, Nolan and Pike:
Philip Nolan "and a friend, John Minor, who was engaged with him in traffic
in wild horses, had acquired the services of a Negro slave belonging to
Stephen Minor, uncle of the younger man. The Negro named Caesar, it seems
had been hired by his master to Gov. Winthrop Sargent, to act as an Indian
interpreter." (per Story of Pontotoc: The Chickasaws by E.T. Winston)
Governor Winthrop complained repeatedly to the Federal Government in
Washington, where Dr. Edward Everett Hale, who was employed by the
Government, found the Winthrop complaints in the files and used Nolan's
story as the basis for Hale's famous story "The Man Without a Country".
(also according to Winston's book)
Col. Peter Ellis Bean's memoirs, when the Spanish attacked the Nolan party
and killed Nolan, "It was agreed that we should retreat. . . The power that
we could not put in our horns was given to Cesar to carry. . While we were
defending ourselves, Cesar stopped at the creek and surrendered himself with
the ammunition to the enemy."
According to Lt. Zebulon Pike's Diary, Spanish Lt. Juan Pedro Walker ("a
native of New Orleans" who had been "employed by Andrew Ellicotts" (sic) in
surveying the U.S.-Spanish border in 1797-98) "had living with him an old
negro, the only one I saw on that side of St. Antonio, who was the property
of some person who resided near Natchez, and who had been taken with Nolan.
Having been acquainted with him in the Mississippi country, he solicited and
obtained permission for old Cesar to live with him. I found him very
communicative and extremely useful."
One document I have refers to a member of the Nolan party as being "Juan
Bautista/Cesar, Granada, France, 46, Negro Slave"
Any information or guidance to other sources anyone can provide would be
really appreciated.
Thank you.
Bob Cole

Hi,
It would really help to give your Grandmother's name, her husbands name, dates etc. If you know who Velma married that
would help as well. Another item would be the children of both. That way it would be easier to look in data bases or figure out
how to search for them.
I know there are both Calverts and Colberts in Jamestown. For example: I have two Velma's who might fit your grandmother,
who are Calverts. I also, because of family name usage and spelling have had to set up a name system of Calvert/Colbert and
Calvert/Covalt as a surname(my own tracking). I also track some
Colberts because I run across them. I do know a Colbert researcher who might be able to help if you can provide more
explicit data.
