Message Board Post:
Hello,
My ancestor, ADAM PRENTICE (b. 1837 in Nepean Township, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada), was one of the sons of DANIEL (Donald? David?) and ANN PRENTICE of Nepean.
I hypothesize that Ann PRENTICE is Ann COLBERT Prentice. I believe that Daniel (b. 1797 in Nepean) married ANN COLBERT (b. circa 1800 in Ireland), a daughter of JOHN & ANN COLBERT of neighboring Goulbourn Township (Hazeldean community). John and Ann Colbert arrived at Goulbourn from Ireland with the Talbot Party of 1818; they had children, including Sarah (married Robert Young), Ann, Mary (married William Richardson), and Frances (married Thomas Rivington).
Might you have reliable information to confirm the marriage of ANN COLBERT to DANIEL PRENTICE? Thank you so much for any help you can offer.
Sincerely,
Jan Mongoven

id like to find my family
Does anyone have information which might indicate whether the great
Chickasaw Chief, General William Colbert, had any family in Virginia,
Maryland or Pennsylvania that he may have visited when he traveled to
Philadelphia in 1795 to meet with President George Washington? Or that Chief
WIlliam may have visited with when he traveled to Washington D.C. in 1816
for negotiation of a treaty with the U.S. Government? Does anyone know of
Colbert oral histories, family records or reports in local papers of the the
Chief's visits with relatives and who those relatives would have been?
Chickasaw Chief William Colbert, son of Captain James Logan Colbert, visited
President George Washington and
Secretary of War Timothy Pickering in Philadelphia in the summer of 1795.
On August 22, President Washington met with Chief Colbert and gave him a
commission as a General for his services against the NW Indians during
General Anthony Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers the previous year. Colbert
was accompanied on the trip by Chickasaw Chiefs WIlliam McGillivray
(Coahomah) and John Brown, and interpreter Malcolm McGee.
The Chickasaws reportedly traveled from the Chickasaw Nation by way of
Nashville (July 1795) and Knoxville on the way to the U.S. Capital at
Philadelphia. On the way back they reportedly traveled by way of Lexington ,
Wythe Courthouse, and Abingdon, Virginia arriving in Knoxville September 10,
1795. I do not know the route the Chickasaws would have taked in 1816 but it
would probably have been through Knoxville again and then either over to
Richmond or to Charlottesville on the way to or from Washington, D.C.
One of Colbert's wives was a mixed-blood Creek named both Jesse and Mimey
(nee Moniac) Colbert. Nashville founder, James Robertson, and the the
Govenor of Tennessee, William Blount, entertained Chief Colbert and
Jessie/Mimey in Tennessee in 1795 on the way to Philadelphia. She was very
pregnant at the time and was left in Knoxville while Chief Colbert visited
President Washington. However, she reportedly may have traveled to meet her
newly
commissioned General William Colbert in Southwestern Virginia on his return.
The visits of the prominent Chickasaws so soon after Wayne's great victory
would presumably have been a noteworthy event in the towns through which
they passed in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Chief Colbert was the son of a white man named James Logan Colbert, who was
raised from childhood by the Chickasaws.
There were Logan and possibly Colbert families in the area of
WesternVirginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania as well as the Carolinas at the
time that James Logan Colbert was likely born, around the 1720's to early
1730's and went to live with the Chickasaws as a child.
Thanks,
Bob Cole,

Hello,
I'm also researching for Colbert. My great great grandmother was Sarah
Elizabeth Colbert born January 1946 in Mississippi. She married a William
Meeks. They had a daughter Susie Meeks Cahill born in 1870 in Shelby Co, Tn. They
later i think moved to Oklahoma just don't know where and then to Louisiana.
Do you have these names in your line of the family? Hope to hear from you.
Peace and Blessings
Zadie
