I am searching for information on the following ancestor:
Margaret Colbert, born about 1843 in Ireland (don't know where in Ireland). She emigrated to Waukegan, Illinois. She married Michael Maher (I don't know when/whether this was in Ireland or in the USA). The 1880 US Census shows her as Margaret Maher, keeping house in Waukegan, Illinois, at the age of 37. That census entry lists one daughter, Mary Maher. She died in approximately 1886.
Her mother or sister may have been named Elizabeth.
I would appreciate any information you could provide. Thank you.

Deaths and Funerals
The funeral of Mrs. Serge Dora COLBERT, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pehr OLSON of 522 Taylor street, was held in Penwell's chapel at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Interment in the Topeka Cemetery.
Shirley,
Thank you so much for your notes with information on other web sites about
the Chickasaw Colberts. I have gotten some very good information from the kma
web page, but have not visited the others. I will do so.
By the way, which of General William Colbert's wives and children are you
descended from?
And, have you been able to match the Chickasaw names of his many children
with English names?
Thanks again,
Bob
A respectful response to the recent memo by Rick Colbert (a distinguished and
published researcher of James Logan Colbert) is presented below in the hopes
that the information and sources cited may assist anyone who is interested in
researching the Chickasaw ancestry of Abigail Colbert Stinnett or the
Chickasaw Colberts generally.
As "concrete evidence to back up" what I earlier wrote about the Dawes
Commission activities, I would refer everyone to the following documents:
"The Journal of American Indian Family Research" Vol. V, No. 3, pages
600 -607 includes summary information on the Dawes Commission and related
court cases regarding the application of Clemon Clay Stinnett, et al.
Records dated "03/11/1999" of the Oklahoma Historical Society Copies
of which are available in the Colbert family files of the Chickasaw
Historical Society, P.O. Box 1548, ADA, Oklahima, 74820) contain copies of
the transcripts and filings related to the application of Clemon Clay
Stinnett.
Among the interesting things you will find in these records are that:
The Supreme Court of the U.S. affirmed a finding of the United States
Court, Southern District, that Abigail Colbert Stinnett and her descendants
were Chickasaws.
The denial of the Stinnett's applications for Chickasaw citizenship by
the Choctaw-Chickasaw citizenship court was based upon a determination that
"none of the applicants removed to the Indian Territory before 1887", not
that Abigail Colbert Stinnett and her descendants were not Chickasaws by
blood.
Although opposing attorneys stated that Abigail's descendants had
applied for membership in the Cherokee tribe, the Stinnett attorneys stated
that (1) no such application for citizenship in the Cherokee Nation could be
found in the records of the commission, (2) the Cherokee application paper
which was supposedly offered by counsel opposing the Stinnett's application
could not be found in the court's files, and (3) no one testified that such
an application had ever been made. (FYI - Not in these records, but well
documented in other records, is the fact that George Colbert, son of James
Logan Colbert and owner of Colberts Ferry at Muscle Shoals in what is today
Colbert County, Alabama, married two sisters who were daughters of the
Cherokee Chief Doublehead. Thus, some Colberts are of Cherokee as well as
Chickasaw ancestry, but not Abigail's descendants.)
No Colberts are shown to have testified or submitted affidavits either
for or against the Stinnetts. Numerous witnesses, some of whom were also
Chickasaws not of the Stinnett family, testified that Abigail was the
Chickasaw daughter of William or Bill Colbert. Two affidavits were submitted
by the attorneys opposing the Stinnett applications. In identical language,
both persons, Overton Love and R.F. Murray, stated that they had never heard
of any William Colbert or Bill Colbert who was a Chickasaw. (If neither Love
or Murray knew of Chief William Colbert, I would submit that neither had
apparently done much genealogy research or historical reading about the
Chickasaws Colberts.)
FYI - Several witnesses for the Stinnetts stated that Abigail and William
were both full-blood Chickasaws. This is very interesting and somewhat
troubling because General William Colbert is generally belived to have been a
half-blood, based on a presumption that James Logan Colbert was not a
mixed-blood Chickasaw. The latter presumption is, however, still subject to
question.
As for Chief William Colbert's wives, historical records most often list
Jessie Moniac, half Creek, as the wife of Chief William Colbert. However,
other historical records state that Chief William Colbert also married a
daughter of the Chickasaw Chief ,Wolf;s Friend. Some family researchers have
presumed Abigail was the daughter of Jessie Moniac, making Abigail at least
one-quarter Creek and possibly less than one-half Chickasaw. However,
Abigail's mother may have been the daughter of Wolf's Friend, making Abigail
most likely to be at least three-quarters Chickasaw. (Anyone wanting sources
for these statements about William's wives can e:mail separately, and I will
gladly cite the sources.)
I hope this information is helpful to anyone interested in the Colbert and
Stinnett families.

Shirley: I read the letter that Bob Cole sent you and there is something you
should know. He wasn't exactly honest. According to him, "Based on
information on the Dawes Commission files... I am descended from James Logan
Colbert's son, William Colbert, and his daughter Abigail Colbert Stinnett...."
The truth is that the Dawes Commission REJECTED his family's claim that he
is a descendent of James Logan Colbert. He also neglected to mention that
in addition to his family claiming to be Chickasaws, they also sent an
application to the Dawes Commission saying they were Cherokees.
Mr. Cole has spent the past ten years trying to prove Abigail Colbert
Stinnett was the daughter of William Colbert. He has not done so. Nor, do I
believe, he ever will.
According to "family documents" of the Stinnetts, Abigail married
Stinnett in Virginia ca. 1814 give or take a couple of years when she was a
young teenager, and that Abigail was born in Kentucky.
Family records and the Dawes Commission do not agree that Abigail was
the daughter of William. And no one in the Chickasaw Colbert family ever
heard of Abigail.
Mr. Cole has a lot of "wishful thinking" regarding the Chickasaw
Colberts, but he has no concrete evidence to back anything he says up.
Rick Colbert (not related to James Logan Colbert)
I am searching for information on Archibald Colbert, my gggrandfather.
His daughter was Fannie Marie Colbert, born 5-5-1861 Washington County,
Maryland; married to George Edward Chaney 11-18-1878; died 10-1-1926
Cumberland, Maryland. My 100 year old mother tells me that Fannie Marie
was part Indian. What little information comes from the family Bible.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Maryland in Georgia
Mr. Cole, I too am a direct decendent of James Logan Colbert. May I suggest

another mailing list <MSPONTOT-D-request(a)rootsweb.com >. These have helped me
a lot especially the people of the mail list. I hope you are able to find all
your answers. My 5th Grgreatgrandfather was Chief William Colbert. shirley <

Hi, KATDAVIS(a)cox.net
I'm Bob Cole. Based on information in the Dawes Commission files and family
documents, I am descended from James Logan Colbert's oldest son, William
Colbert, and his daughter Abigail Colbert Stinnett of Limestone County,
Alabama. William Colbert's most commonly used Chickasaw name was
Choosamataha. He and several of his brothers were Chickasaw Chiefs. At
various times he was also referred to by several other Chickasaw names,
which was not uncommon for Chickasaws. He was made a U.S. General by
President George Washington.
I have been researching the Chickasaw Colberts for about 10 years, travelling
to various places where archives are available. I can tell you that there is
an awful lot of unsubstantiated and awfully bad information about James Logan
Colbert and the Chickasaw Colbert family out there. There is also some very
good research, with the source of theories and speculation well footnoted. If
you get looked on researching the family, you have to be very skeptical about
what you find in even otherwise good history books. And be especially
skeptical of information obtained on the internet, much of which is just a
broad, computer aided circulation of speculative or false information. If
you are, or are likely to become, seriously interested in learning facts
about James Logan Colbert, ask for sources so you can judge the accuracy of
the information provided.
Here are some of the major questions regarding James Logan Colbert about
which there has been much speculation and also some documentation in various
places.
Was James Logan Colbert born in North America, as he once claimed, or
an immigrant from Scotland, Ireland, or France? If born in America, (which I
think most likely), where? South or North Carolina, or perhaps Pennsylvania,
Maryland, or Virginia. Who were his parents and grandparents,? Was one of his
ancestors or inlaws the James Logan Colbert who was the private secretary to
William Penn and name sake for a famous Indian Chief or another James Logan
Colbert who later immigrated from Northern Ireland and would have been in
Pennsylvania or Western Virginia when James Logan Colbert's mother was most
likely born and when she and James Logan Colbert's father conceived our
ancestor?
Under what circumstances did James Logan Colbert come to live with the
Chickasaws? His friend Adair wrote that James had been with the Chickasaws
since he was an "infant", but that may have meant anything from a baby to a
young lad. Was he an orphan when raised by the Chickasaws?
How extensive was his involvement with the Cherokee and Choctaw
tribes, as sell as the Chickawas tribe? (He was involved in trading with both
tribes, and his sons married women from prominent famiilies in the Cherokee,
Choctaw, and Creek tribes.)
Who were his three wives and all his children?
How extensive were his trading activities, his plantations, and his
service for the British against the French in the French and Indian War? How
exstensive was his service for the British, Chickasaws, and American Tories
against the Spanish Colonial Government in Louisiana and Florida, and the
American Rebels in the American Revolution. What were his activities as a
River Pirate on the Mississippi, Arkansas and Ohio Rivers during, and
possibly after the American Revolution?
Was he murdered or did he die from an accidental fall from a horse?
Why do Spanish documents continue to reference his pirate activities even
after he was reported by the great Creek Chief Alexander McGillivray as
having died?
He was clearly a fascinating fellow, and you can become hooked on researching
his life, or just enjoy learning the highlights about his and the mixed-blood
dynasty he started.
If you would like to engage in a mutual exchange of more information, I would
be pleased to do so. Please let me know who are you descended from and what
information about James Logan Colbert and his family are you most interrested
in?
I, of course, would also be very interested in finding out what information
you already have. I would be especially intersted in receivig any information
you have on the following matters:
Your Colbert ancestors.
James Logan Colbert's birth and ancestry.
Lames Logan Colbert's involvement in the Chickasaw wars with the
French and later the French and Indian War.
William Colbert, his two or more wives, and his children, especially
Abigail Colbert Stinnett.
You said your husband has compiled information on the Colbert famiily. Can I
purchase pay for a copy of it?
Best Regards,
Bob Cole

Hi,
I am doing research on the mixed blood Chickasaw Colbert family descended
from James Logan Colbert and his half-blood sons, especially William Colbert.
I have two questions. If you could provide any information to leads to help
answer either of them I would appreciate the information.
(1) One of William Colbert's daughter, Abigail, married a William Stinnett
probably about 1816. They lived in Limestone County, Alabama. Census records
indicate she was born in Kentucky or Virginia about 1793. Do you know anthing
about an Abigail Colbert from Kentucky in the late 1700's?
(2) A William Colbert and a Martin Colbert both served in the Kentucky
militia under General William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812. William was
wounded and captured by British and allied Indians at River Raisin, near
Detroit. The British turned most of the prisoners over to the Indians, who
massacred most of the prisoners. I do not know if that Willliam Colbert was
the Half blood Chickasaw Indian Chief, or another William Colbert. Do you
have records or information on any William Ccolbert or Martin Colbert in
Kentucky in the early 1800's or late 1700's?
Thank you,
Bob Cole
