As related by my grandmother, Aussie Colbert served in the Civil War. He left the Army to return to Tennessee for the birth of his son, Henry Thomas Colbert in 1863. At this time some of the Newman family (Aussie Colbert's in-laws) turned him in to the "authorities". While on his way back to the Army, he was apprehended, and killed. It was believed that he was in the Confederate Army, but no proof of his service has been found. This was a deathbed confession from an Aunt to my grandmother. Aussie Colbert's brother-in-law was Benjamin Newman who was a Captain in the Confederate Army. This family legend needs more checking.
Also, according to family tradition, the Colbert family sat on their front porch in Decatur County, TN and could hear the gunfire and cannons raging during the Battle of Shiloh on 6-7 Apr 1862.
Thomas Aussie Colbert was born 1839-1840 in Perry County, TN. He married Sarah Jane Newman about 1859 in Decatur County, TN. Sarah Jane was the daughter of Adam and Alisa Newman. Aussie and Sarah Jane Colbert had daughter Lucy A. Colbert born in May 1860 and son Henry Thomas Colbert born 1 May 1863. Henry Thomas Colbert married Annie Belle Shands on 30 Jan 1887 in TN. I have the Shands line back to Scotland in mid-1600s if you need that. Annie Belle's parents were William Matterson Shands and Nancy Ann "Nan" Bivens.
I do not have Dora Bullman in my database, do you know her parents?
Do we have any info on Thomas Aussie Colbert's parents?
Scott
Ok. Thanks. One more question: Do you know if Thomas Aussie Colbert served in the Civil War?? And if so with which unit?
I will post some info on family lines tonight.
Regards,
Scott
I have Thomas Aussie Colbert born about 1840 and died about 1863, shortly after the birth of Henry Thomas. Dora Bullman b. 9-1899 d.1987. She married Roby Hutcherson, my gg uncle.
Talk to you soon,
Cathy
Cathy: I saw your message re: Colberts of W. TN. Part of my family lived in
Smith Co., TN beginning in the 1840's. Do you know if your family lived
there? If so, I would be happy to exchange info. Archibald Jackson Colbert
moved to Smith Co. with several families; i.e., Timberlakes, Dorseys,
Condits, Drivers, Masseys, from Franklin Co., NC.

Cathy:
What info do you have on Thomas Aussie Colbert? Dates of birth/death, parents? I have a family legend of sorts about his death that I will pass along, but would love to get confirmation on his death date first.
I also have Austin info: My 3rd great grandfather was Jacob Austin, his wife was Elizabeth Little. They moved to McNairy County, TN in the 1860s following the Civil War from Anson/Union County, NC. I have the Austin line back to Ireland in mid-1700s. Let me know your Austin relations and I will check my database.
I am descended from George Newton Bullman and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Kizer. They moved to McNairy County, TN from Hall County, GA just prior to the Civil War. Let me know your Bullman relations.

Scott
Thank you "Howie" for replying to my inquiry. I do not remember Juana Colbert's mother's name. I also do not know if the Juana Colbert I am looking for ever got married. Colbert is Juana's mainden name. I met Juana Colbert at the Holy Comforter catholic grade school in Washington, DC. I left to go back to Japan and when I returned, I was able to get into contact with her again and she was my Maid of Honor, when I married into the Jenkins family. I lost contact with her after that and I heard that she may be somewhere in Florida.
Scott,
Thanks for the reply. I would love to share our pooled info and get a more complete history. I noticed you had Bullman's in your line. I also had aunts by marriage that were Bullman's. They married into my Hutcherson lines. Talk to you soon.
Cathy

I finally got to the post messages and your Anna and mine are different. This Anna married a John Colbert..I went thru all marriages for Colberts at Ebensburg Courthouse and there is a lot of Anna's and Annies but none that married a Stokes...
If I can help in anyway I will...Colberts are a hard family to find ,even though there are alot of them.
Cathy:
We are related. Henry Thomas Colbert and Annie Belle Shands are my gggrandparents. I have info tracing these lines back. What do you have? Where can we start sharing?
Hello. My name is Rick Colbert and I just caught the tail end of your
correspondence re:
George Kepler and Polly Colbert. My family is from Franklin Co and lived
on Little Shocco Creek between Franklin and Warren counties. My
GG-grandfather, Ira Colbert, married Polly Cooper in 1823. To my knowledge,
that was the only "Polly" Colbert in either Franklin or Warren. In 1849 they
moved to Texas. The Colbert family had lived in Bute/Franklin since the
1770's. Before that, they lived in Halifax. And before that, they lived on
Plum Tree Island, a.k.a. Mush Island off Weldon, NC on the Roanoke River in
1721.
Would like to exchange any info. you have on Colbert and related families.

Hi Cliff,
Just read your email regarding Joseph Kepler of Warren Co. Yes, I do believe he was a sibling of George Kepler who lived next door to him in the 1820 Warren Co. Census. Would love to share info. George was first married to Polly Colbert. My address is jgarwood(a)lausd.k12.ca.us
Oh thank you Sharyn. The question that, I believe, many of us share is: "Why can't relatives tell us of what they know?" Now that I'm older, I have learned the hard way, that family history is so important for reasons other than whether a distant relative was famous/infamous or awards, deeds, and actions. It's about medical histories of one's ancestors. It's a strange feeling filling out a medical questionaire and a lot of the information is unknown. An example is when an elderly family member doesn't grasp the importance of passing on family medical history to those who most need it. Yes, I will gladly keep in touch with you.
thanks for your response! My Colbert family history is rather sketchy itself and I'm only going by the written word of an old woman...who may have glamorized the history too. until 1827. He married Margaret McAfee, had 6 children and died in 1838.
