I am looking for the location of the Alex Colbaugh farm in West Virginia, ca 1862. Alex's name appears in my search for my GGG Uncle Jerry Wilson, former slave of Mary Morrison Hamill of Maryland. Seems Jerry and his wife Harriet continued to stay near and watch over Mary after she freed them long before the war.
Phoebe Wilson, the daughter of Jerry Wilson and Nancy Hamilton or Piedmont, Maryland (now West Virginia), is the subject of my search. Phoebe married my GG Uncle Caleb Davison. We have a manumission from Mary Hamil to Phobe Wilson. We also have the story of Caleb working for Phoebe's owner in order to purchase her freedom. Mary Hamill's manumission to Phoebe with the condition that Phoebe pay Mary the sum of $200.00 within a year for her freedom. And Caleb working to pay $250.00 for his wife Phoebe's freedom. One document, the manumission, and one family story, Caleb working to pay $250.00. Names, dates, places...seem to say both stories are one.
Nancy Hamilton vs Harriet Wilson....a mystery for now. Nancy is Phoebe's mother so Nancy could have been the first wife of Jerry...for now, a mystery.
Harriet and Jerry Wilson were said to have moved(documented in the Hamill history) to the Alex Colbaugh farm in West Virginia after the 1862 death of Mary Hamill. Harriet and Jerry died at the Colbaugh farm. Ruth Wilson is listed with Harriet and Jerry. Ruth could be a relative of mine. Another mystery.
If anyone can assist me in finding the Alex Colbaugh farm, West Virginia, ca. 1862, it would be greatly appreciated!
Bill Davison

Hi,
I'm not sure what you are looking for, but in one exerpt it mentions the Colbaugh Cemetary and enumeration by Mrs. Norris (It states Morris incorrectly), Lopshire who was my grandmother. She was friends with the Colbaughs and the cemetary mentioned was just a mile from my grandparents ranch on 45. I remember the Colbaughs, but no real specifics. If you are looking for people who can give you personal information on the family, there are many in Madison county I could direct you to. Probably the easiest to contact would be A.T. and Georgia May Smith who run the Hindsville Mercantile and post office. I hope this was of some use. take care, Dolly Lopshire Headley.
