The exact location of the death of James Coker of 1846/48 is probably on the Edgecombe County side of Fishing creek where the Cokers lived prior to my gt. grandfather Charles David Coker who came to Tarboro. I have seen the meadow though few stones all my Coker grandfathers and probably grandmothers are buried there beck to the Caleb Coker of 1748. William David Coker and Charlotte Eppes Neal were my 2 gt. grandparents who were from near Enfield NC.
Hope this helps,

I been working on the line since 1969. I have over 1000 sources for my huge history and 113,000 names in Ancestry and this does not count double lines.

Robert is the father not Caleb as Barkeman was just assuming and her work is unuseable because of too many gross errors. Anything in my work that may apear to differ back to Caleb Coker I have verified by the late Gardiner Tyler Jr. who passed away March 29, 1993 but was most accurate and knowledgeable of the family connection of my coker line to the President Tyler line. Gardiner also verified my Fly connection as well and thus is why I am a double 4th gt. grandson to Pres. John Tyler.
I am also a member of the Military Order of Stars and Bars on President John Tyler.
Hope this helps. One caution that I have found in my 44 years of tracing my family history is Census and Will records much less deeds are only a guide. As you can appreciate Census takers were not that educated and names got spelled all sorts of ways and dates can be incorrect. Another thing most of the time when a child is considered to have died young or an infant that is not always so. People in the early 1900s and more son in the 1800s wanted their work to be considered complete so if they did not know where to look fora person rather than put information wanting or NFR no further record or DSP This was not always true. One of my lines to John Tyler assumes the grandmother died an infant but how do you explain a picture hanging on the wall of a lady well past 50 as died an infant and the picture favors the first wife of Pres. Tyler. I get leary when I see DSP Died Infant.
Jusat food for thought from one only 6 years away from 50 years tracing and over 113,000 names in ancestry with over 1000 sources.
Take care Andrew
from
Clyde

Mary Kay,
Census records of course can have errors and one thing that most people are not aware of is that it is only in 1850 that the names of the people in the household were mentioned. James Coker who married Olive McDaniel had his will probated in 1848 and was written in 1846 thus he probably died in 1847/48 thus no names on the 1850 census to match. Olive died in 1854 thus more chance with her to see census records. The will is abstract located on page 79 of the Williams and Griffin Abstracts of Ecgecombe County North Carolina 1733-1856. The William David Coker that is my line continues
William David Coker who died after 1855 married Martha Pittman. Thier son William Reddin Coker married Mary Tyler the eldest child and daughter of President John Tyler and first wife Letitia Christian. Their son another William David Coker married Charlotte Epps Neal direct descent from President Jefferswon via the Epps line. Their son Charles David Coker was my gt. grandfather who died in 1920 and married Leuvenia Fly his second cousin who was another great grandchild of President Tyler thus they were 2nd cousins. The line continues to Charles Leslie Coker and Sallie Sessoms the 3 gt. grdau of President Monroe and 2 gt. of Pres. Andrew Johnson.
My mother was Ella Ruth Coker 1914-2007 who married my father in 1944 Shelton Clyde Gallop 1919-1967. I am their only child names after my father and am 65 years old.
One thing to remember even today that in homes where grandchildren are raised by the grandparents there is no designation for grandchild which can make things confusing.
I began my research in 1969 now 113,000 names in Ancestry and over 1000 sources. I have many lines into the 1300s and earlier and the Coker line is cone back to 1020 in my records.
I am not sure if William the sone of James and Olive had a son names James Richard as I have not seen a will much less census record. I won't say you are wrong about this as it could fit in somewhere. Take care, Let's hope we can get a Coker Family Assoc. going. Always, Clyde Gallop

Can you provide your source for Mary Cartwright being daughter of Caleb Cartwright? I thought the Mary who married William Coker was daughter of Robert Cartwright (d. 1675/6)
