Tish, this is Glenna Coker, daughter of Roy who was the brother of your Granny and my Aunt Nettie. I have started/stopped trying to research my ancestry several times in the last few years but I'm trying so hard to make sure I have the correct people/persons that I get frustrated and give up (temporarily!). Maybe working together and pooling the information we have can help us all out. I do have some pictures and documents that I got from Uncle Ed that I need to scan and send to you; hopefully you have some I can use too. I would love to hear all the info you got from Aunt Nettie Belle, she was great at giving details. We always looked forward to getting letters from her because they'd be FULL of information, she'd run out of room and start curving her sentences all around the paper. My daddy always talked about what a great cook she was and especially loved her chocolate chip cookies ... he thought no one could make them as well as she did!
I look forward to hearing from you. I know we met at least once before but you were a little girl and you probably don't remember me.

Wow, you've made a lot more progress than I have. When looking at the census records I'm pretty sure I know which direction to go, but her handwritten notes seem so off. I guess it's possible she was mistaken about some of their names since her parents died when she was young.
I haven't been very diligent lately, but hopefully I'll get back on track with this.
Thank you for your information. As I make progress, maybe our paths will cross out there.

Sherri,
My gggrandfather came down to SC from NC. He was Whitley Sr. (1745-1820) who married Nancy Clark.
Their children and sibling names were Thomas, Benjamin, Henry, Noah, Phillip, Turner, John Nelson, and Sugars, most of which are pretty common names.

Message Board Post:
Joe,
I got this idea from my grandmother's handwritten note (from many years ago.) It's very confusing, but this is what she wrote:
"Mae I. Coker....Her Dad's name was James Materson. His Father's name was Bill Coker. His Brothers were Tobin Coker, John Coker, Joe Coker, Leonard Coker. His Grandmother was a Crumpton. The Coker Family originated from South Carolina."
Also, when I find James Madison Coker on the census it shows his father to be James J. Coker from South Carolina.
I may have taken off down a wrong path somewhere, I don't know. So many people had the same names. I've never found a "Tobin" anywhere either, so I may be misunderstanding her handwriting.
Any info you have that could steer me in the right direction would be much appreciated:)
Thanks!
Sherri
