I see a London Coker born in AL who died 2/25/1919 in Indian Territory, Holdenville, OK, married to Mary Tate Washburn....is that who you are referring to? Someone on Ancestry.com posted this information without any primary sources. They thought he was the son of an Alexander Coker, b. 1775 England, but I don't think there is any source information to back that up. The Indian enrollment cards have a London Coker born 1822, enrolled in 1890. They seem to indicate he was a Creek Indian. The OK 1907 Territory Census had a London Coker, born 1837, a Native American. The 1940 census for Seminole Co., OK had a London Coker born 1914, listed as Native American. So, it is VERY hard to tell from the records if this is all the same person or not and if it is, then exactly what his age was was apparently not known for sure. The 1940 census says he was the half-brother to a Minnie Pinekill, but Ancestry.com doesn't link this family to any earlier records, so I don't know what els!
e to tell you, unless you know where he might have been in 1930. The SS death index has a London Coker (SS# from Oklahoma) born 5/13/1913 and died in 4/21/1989 in Marizopa Co., Arizona.

The information I have comes from William Stewart Coker's book "It Happened in Cow Country" -- a great book! William Stewart Coker was the grandson of your John Coker (1829-1914). Here are a few excerpts:
"My grandfather, John Coker, was an Englishman. He was born in 1829 in England where he grew to manhood. He liked to hunt. He shot a hare on an estate. Poaching was against the law and if he was caught he could have been shot. He didn't relish the idea so he went to Australia and from there he came to the United States. He settled around Montfort, Wisconsin.
John Coker married Adelaide Calame, dauighter of Mr. and Mrs. Pierre Calame of Preston, Wisconsin. They raised seven children: Sarah, Charlotte, Henry, William S. (father of the writer), Frank, Walter and Edwin H.
John Coker came to Nebraska in 1884. He hired a horse from a livery stable in North Platte. He forded the North Platte River and rode west twenty-two miles. He chose the Northwest Quarter (NW 1/4) of Section Twelve (12), Township Fourteen (14), Range Thirty-four (34), L:incoln County for his homstead.
He returned to Wisconsin and in the spring of 1885 he brought his family and moved into a sod house they had built on the homestead.
The father of John Coker came from England to the United States to visit his son in Wisconsin and was shipwrecked and lost at sea on his return to England."
>From the Prologue of W.S. Coker's (1908 - 2003) book "It Happened in Cow Country" - published in 1972 by Purcell's Incorporated, Broken Bow, NE.
You'll also find John Coker's grave marker on "Find A Grave" - Sutherland Riverview Cemetery, Lincoln County, NE, Memorial # 63735689
FYI -- I am related to the Coker family twice by marriage. My great-great aunt Cecilia Fye married William Sherman Coker (son of your John Coker) -- William Stewart Coker was their son. I'm also related by the marriage of my great- aunt Mable Fye who married Vernon Julius Coker (son of Henry Coker & Alverda Peale - grandson of your John Coker).

Annis Coker was the son of James Coker Jr. and Kessiah Porter. This James Coker Jr., son of James Coker Sr., (1725), who was the son of Caleb Coker.
I have more information on this line, which I will send to you. Pete Coker sent me a lot of information on this line and I haven't entered it all in my FTM yet.
I'll write to you at your e-mail address.

Subject: [COKER] Cokers, Edgecombe Co., NC
The recent messages re Coker DNA has prompted me to renew my search.
I am seeking information on the Coker family that lived in Edgecombe County, NC
from at least the mid 1700s. I have some information down to Annis Coker who
married Thomas Marks probably around 1810. She was listed in the 1830 census
index in Edgecombe Co. Then I have John and Louisa Coker there in the 1860
census but I cannot connect them to anyone else.

Hi Jamie, Familysearch.org is a great place to research if you haven't
used it; go to the home page and select search records. Just type in the
name Samuel Walker Coker and the first result is an index to the death
record. Parents are Jim Coker and Martha Comer. If you live in Alabama you
can order a copy of his death certicate from the county health dept. or if
you live near Birmingham you may obtain a copy from the Family History
Center from microfilm for less money.
Henderson Coker did have a daughter named Martha. I am sure someone on
this list knows who she married but I don't have the time to research
Martha the daughter of Henderson Coker.
What year and what county did the Martha Coker die with a father named Brake?
Warmest regards, Beth

Jessie, no I did not. James Coker married Martha Comer in 1871 Shelby
County, Alabama. Index to record is found on Family Search. Samuel Comer
and Martha Comer are enumerated in the 1870 census in Shelby County,
Alabama. James Coker is believed to be a descendant of James Coker and
Sarah (Sallie). James Coker Sr. was living in Autauga County, AL at the
time of his death and a deed names a son named James. My Gr. Aunt Birdie
interviewed her father, George Washington Coker and Aunt Birdie stated
that his Uncle James died in Shelby County, Alabama. A James Coker was
wanted for murder in Autauga Co AL and for rape in Butler Co AL. Daniel
Coker, probably his brother left his family in charge of his brother
Thomas Coker in Autauga. It is possible that Daniel Coker left to take his
brother out of state or maybe James was in prison. Anyway James Coker is
not found in the records until the marriage to Martha Comer. I don't have
all of this properly written up with sources and will do so later. So
anyway this James Coker is likely a descendant of John Coker and Priscilla
but not descended through Robert B Coker Beth

Hi Beth - thank YOU for doing the yDNA surname project! They are so invaluable (and a ton of work).
I'm not really taking on any project here, just starting a thread where we can share information. :) Autosomal testing is so different that organizing a surname project for atDNA (beyond making it an extension of yDNA) is something people are still trying to figure out. After all, the segments that we may label as "Coker" today may later get narrowed down to a different surname of a female ancestor who married a Coker, and so on. But, sharing info is a start. :)
You should send in your FF kit - but only if you're ready for a new addiction! ;)

Please send me a link to your tree or else let me know exactly which 3 Cokers you are a match with...and more details. Thank you for sharing. I am very curious and I know others will be curious for more details also. I just can't remember which tree on Ancestry.com was yours.
Jessie

My name is Mike Coker and I may have something you can do.First my Coker line is
father John Ralph born 1924 Ga.g father James Allen 1899 Ga John Martin 1859 Ga
Jackson 1814 Ga Solomon 1785 South Carolina. Now I took a Y DNA test but have
found no connection with any Coker tested but I also did another test listed
below that has matched me with 3 Coker families one of them was a third cousin
from a sister of John Martin it even told me the correct kinship of Debra. This
may be something that would help you our Coker's may be from the same line as I
am not sure who was before Solomon. This test is at ancestry.com I also found
other cousin's from both sides of my family an was able to find them and put
them into my tree
If you have any questions let me know

I am a male COKER descendant but my line comes from my grandmother I
cannot do a DNA test.
I have gotten tons of info on the COKER line over the years from other

anywhere on the line pls advise me....
1-Dora Coker b. 1878 GA (grma)
2- Wm. H. Coker jr. 1853 GA (G grpa)
3- Wm H. Coker sr. 1829 SC (GG grpa)

6- Robert B. Coker sr. 1740 VA (GGGGG grpa)
7- John Coker jr 1715 VA (GGGGGG grpa)

I'm researching Rob B Jr, Henderson, Martha Coker, whom married a James Coker, that I haven't traced yet (by my calculations and census he is MUCH MUCH older than her, their son Samuel Walker Coker, son Walter Bradford Coker Sr, then Jr. (My cousins dad)

Y-DNA tests were done for descendants of Henderson Coker, son of Robert B.
Coker. None of the results matched the results for the John Coker line.
Our conclusions with these results lead us to believe that Robert B Coker
was the son of Hannah Coker and Richard Varnell. Hannah is believed to be
a daughter of Robert Coker and Ann. Robert Coker is believed to be the son
of John Coker and Priscilla. Unfortunately no Varnells have tested so we
cannot compare the data. No success to date in finding someone from that
line to test.
You may find a copy of the will of Richard Varnell on Family Search.
