I have a J.C. Coker who married Estell Edington and had a son named William Edington Coker in 1921. Unfortunatly J.S. disappeared and I do not have a full name.

Joseph Coker could be the J. C. Coker that married my Estell Edington and had son named William Edington Coker in 1921. But unfortunately I do not know J.C. Cokers name on the birth certificate it only J.C. and I do not know where Estell and J.C. are born.

I thought her dad may have been John. I checked my master file after my last response. The Hansards go way back. I have a book that traces them to early 1500's. Were you referring to them or the Dews, as far as the crusades?
The coducil is in the Knoxville records. I made notes from it years ago after I ran across it there. I MAY have a hard copy buried somewhere. Rebecca may have remarried a Wilkerson in 1901 but I have been unable to find her or her daughter after 1900 for certain.

This is so helpful! Thank you so much for that information. I had suspected that Charles might be the father's name since Charley was the first child's name. I am not surprised they were not married. It appears that Rebecca's older sister also had some children out of wedlock so that fits but it does appear that Rebecca took his name. She appears as Rebecca Coker in the 1900 census.
I have found lots of interesting information on Lura's line. I have not confirmed it yet but one of her ancestors reportedly fought in the Crusades. What I have on Lura Frances Hansard is the following:
Father - John Hansard (13 May 1855 - 24 Jan 1926)
Mother - Lavica A Dew (1 Mar 1855 - 14 Jan 1942)
It appears that they are all buried in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Chruch cemetery. Here is a link to a list that was very helpful for me. http://files.usgwarchives.net/tn/anderson/cemeteries/mtpleasantb.txt
I have much more, I am currently in the process of getting it organized in Gramps rather than maintaining it here at ancestry. You mention the coducil to Margaret's will, is that online somewhere? I do not have any information on Rebecca's daughter other than a birth year of 1888. My line comes through the son Charley (1885-1966) (married Lura) who is also buried in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

Charlotte, where did you go? Do you have a file on the Corley family? If so would you send it to me via email? I recall corresponding with one of your friends regarding the Corley family but cannot seem to find my messages. I believe that Nancy Coker who married John W. Corley is a daughter of William C. Coker and Jemima Crumpton. Seems as if every Coker family had a daughter named Nancy. I also noticed that Nancy Coker, daughter of Philip Coker, Jr. married an Avary. The Avary family is connected to the Crumpton family. Although I do not think that the Philip Coker family and the William C. Coker are connected. So many threads. Anyway need some male descendant of William C. Coker and Jemima Crumpton to do the Y DNA test to confirm my assumptions. Any volunteers? Beth

Rebecca Cash was the girlfriend of Charles Coker, b1858, d1890, who was the son of Leonard John Coker, who was murdered in 1871. Charles and Rebecca appearantly never married. She and thier children are mentioned in Leonard's widows Margaret's coducil to her 1902 will. It does not sex them or name them. I had assumed they had 2 girls and had found conflicting data in the census records. Leonard was the brother of my ancestor, James. My Cokers were kin to the Hansards as well. Do you know who was Lura's father?

Hello Cousins,
I have hit a brick wall and I am hopeful there is someone out there who has the tidbit of information I need to proceed.
I am seeking the name of the Coker who married Rebecca Cash after 1880 and died before 1900. They had two children according to the 1990 Census. Charley born 1885 and Ellar in 1888. Rebecca lists herself as a widow on the 1990 census (Civil District 1, Anderson) and was still living in her father's home in 1880 (in Knox county but he moved to Anderson as well).
Charley (1885-1966) married Lura Hansard (1890-1963) and they had a number of children.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Maridean

Yes, I do subscribe to Ancestry. I just recently joined Archives.com and FamilySearch.org. For some reason I had'nt come across that info yet.
His death certificate shows James O as his father, but that is HIS name. I was hoping it showed James M. But it has to be the right one. Georgia Powell is shown as his mother, which fits my Ella Georgia Norah Powell.
I appreciate your help very much.
If you ever need photos, I have several and expect to get even more. My grandmother is going through her things and knows that I am the only family member interested in our history., so she's trying to make sure I receive these items.
Thanks again.
Sherri

Sherri, this link will take you to a photo of the marker for James Ona Coker on Find A Grave.

Do you have a subscription to Ancestry? I located James in the 1910 and 1920 census. Carrie Frances Coker and husband are living close by James Ona Coker in the 1920 census.

Beth, thank you for such a quick reply.
After several months of research, and MUCH thanks to other people's genealogy websites, I feel pretty confident about the info leading down to James J. Coker. After that I'm not so sure, simply because of the handwritten info from Granny. It doesn't quite match up.
This is a list of her parents and siblings exactly how she wrote it:
Carrie Frances Coker=Elledge
Died the 28th of March-1975
Buried in California
James Ona Coker Died year Robert was born (that would be 1943)
Buried at Mountain Peak-Ellis County
Joseph Layflate Born in Henderson Co
Buried in Tennessee-Died 1925
Nettie Coker Born in Henderson Co
She Died Buried Athens Cemetery
Jennie Coker Born Baxter Texas
Buried there I guess
My Mother Ella Georgia Norah Powell was buried
also in Athens Cemetery
My daddy James Matterson was buried at Tissemengo Oklahoma
Ella Jenette Coker -Phelps
Mae Isiabell Coker 1896 Jan 14th
Corra Ellen Coker-Born 1901
THIS IS THE END OF HER LIST
I am definitely researching all this, I just hoped someone might already have some of my missing pieces. It seems so crazy that the generations closest are the ones I have trouble with! I know times were hard and my great grandmother was raised by siblings and aunts & uncles because both her parents died when she was young. I don't know how or where.
Thank you so much for taking a look.
Sherri

Yes, James J Coker is enumerated in the 1850 census. William J Coker is in the household b. about 1846. I have not researched William J Coker. James Coker married a Corley so maybe descendants of the Corley family have researched your family. To help I need birth and death dates and places.

Wow, Charlotte. Great to hear from you. Yes, Steve and I both agree that Daniel "Doc" Perry Coker was probably a son of William and Jemima Coker. From memory don't recall why but we decided his name was actually Daniel.
Husband told me I could draw my social security this year. I am like am I that old!
Anyway I am still the adminstrator of the Family Tree Coker Surname site and no one has been tested from the line of Philip Coker. Would be wonderful if you could find someone to test. I am also a volunteer adminstrator on a wiki, WeRelate.org. Presently cleaning up my pages on the family of James M. Coker. Need to finish the Coker lines and get to my other ancestors. I promised to enter data on my Jones line but have not finished. Cousin is probably disappointed. The Coker line just has a way of grabbing me. Also on a Coker mailing list but is primarily Georgia Cokers but our Cokers were in Georgia before Alabama. Anyway love hearing from you. Keep in touch.

This seems to be my line of Cokers but I've got a lot of gaps. If someone could help me I really would appreciate it.
My great grandmother was Mae Isabell Coker. Her handwritten notes that I found say that her father was James Matterson Coker and her mother was Ella Powell. It also says his brothers were George, John and Bud. His sisters were Frances and Ella.
In another handwritten note (by her daughter, my grandmother) it says that HIS father was Bill Coker and his grandmother was a Crumpton.
I believe she is wrong. I believe that Bill was his GRANDFATHER and that his father was James J. Coker (mother Eliza E. Coker).
Does anyone have any information on these people?
Sherri
