Hi. I came across the Nicholas Wood family through my project to link all the men and women buried at the Western NC asylum (Broughton hospital) to their loved ones on Ancestry and Find a Grave. His daughter, Lucy Ellen Wood, who married H M Davis, is one of the folks buried at the hospital cemetery. Many of those folks have no family online thus far - I am always delighted to find families for them. I am especially happy to find any with photos, etc to personalize it more. What information I have on the family is all on the tree and gathered through searching the online records. So far as I know I am not kin - though I have found links between my extended family and two other folks at the hospital cemetery. The longer I do this kind of research the more I realize that we're all related somehow anyway.

The History of Rayburn Chapel A.M.E. Church
By L. Jarod Pearson
Rayburn Chapel A.M.E. Church was built in 1889 and is the oldest African-American church in Cowan. The historical roots of this congregation can be traced back to the 1830's when a Methodist circuit rider came to evangelize the Cherokee Indians.
The early 19th Century was a period of nationwide revival known as the Second Great Awakening. The Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians made an extraordinary effort to evangelize the pioneer settlers in the Appalachian region and in the growing western settlements. Area revivals, also known as camp meetings or brush arbors, were organized for the preaching of the gospel and made way for churches to be built some years later.
During and after this period of revival, the Methodists commissioned circuit riders to venture into the wild frontier and minister to small populations dispersed throughout the Appalachian region. The Methodist circuit riders not only preached to white settlers but also preached to the indigenous populations, especially the predominate Cherokee.
Rev. Cummins, one such Methodist circuit rider, made his way up the Boiling Fork Creek in the 1830's and brought the gospel to Cherokee Indians living in the greater Hawkins Cove, Miller Cove, and Keith Cove areas. Rev Cummins planted a Cherokee congregation, presumably in Hawkins Cove where the Cherokee population was heavily concentrated.
The Reverend's two daughters, Ellen Jane and Elizabeth Cummins, married into a Cherokee family. William Coker, a Cherokee, married Ellen Jane Cummins while his brother, John, married Elizabeth Cummins. William and John both became lay Methodist ministers and William pastored the congregation founded by his father-in-law.
The sustainability of the church ended in 1838 when the Cherokee Indians left on the Trail of Tears. The Coker family was among thousands of Tennessee Cherokee residents that moved west to Indian Territory. According to Rev. Cummins' descendants, the church was turned over to the slave families living in the same area.
We do not know how long the church operated after the departure of the Coker family. We can be certain that the church disbanded prior to the American Civil War. (Two other Cowan churches, Boiling Fork Baptist and Cowan M.E. Church, disbanded during the Civil War.)

Hi Donna,
We had emailed each other a couple of years back and I was wondering if you ever found the bible you had packed away? My sister Tami and I would like to see the information in it if possible. Maybe even obtain it if you are willing to. Please let me know. My name is Tony Noland. Im from Alluwe, OK near the Coker cemetery. My GGrandmother Eliza Coker who raised us, is layed to rest there which was also on her original Indian allotment. When she passed she left me most of the family history and pictures and asked me to always keep it safe. If I'm assuming correctly the Bible you have is or was from her brother Bud Coker married to Mildred. My number is 918-693-4285 or email tnoland2004(a)yahoo.com
Thank you reading
Have a good day

Just read your next post - Ok - hello first cousin - once
removed - maybe twice. Spear was my grandfather, and it
appears, your great great grandfather. Spear's third child
was Emory Harrison Coker, born May 29, 1911. 'Em' married
Viola Ewing. Em and Viola's oldest child, if I am not
mistaken, is your grandpa Emory Leroy Coker, Sr.
Charlton ( Matilda)
Robert A. ( Lydia)
Mary M. ( unk)
Emory Spear ( Nancy Wages)(bc1886)
Emory Harrison ( Viola Ewing)(b1911)
Emory Leroy, Sr. (b1932)
The Cherokee chief story comes from my daddy, Hugh D.
Coker, and my aunt Elzora, 4th and 2nd children of Spear
and Nancy Wages. The Cherokee princess story comes from
the children of my uncle "Bunk" aka Rufus Ray Coker. When
Spear was older and living in Knoxville, Tennessee, he
told two of Bunk's children the princess story. I never
heard a story that Spear's father was Harrison Coker.
I only saw that for the first time when I got a copy of
his death cdertificate. So that info came from his widow,
Edna.(I believe maiden name Green - not sure). Spear
married Edna in Tennessee after leaving Nancy Wages Coker, along with Ed, Elzora, Em, my daddy, Ruby, and Bunk in
Spalding County, Georgia around 1920, not long after their
move from Auburn,Georgia. That is how Lydia Lewellan Coker
winds up on the 1920 Spalding County census, either in the
houshold of Nancy Coker, or the household of James
Summerville, Mary M. Coker's only known husband. In
Tennesee, Mary M. Coker Summerville eventually once again
returned to her maiden name of Coker - at least - as far
as I know.

Hello, cousin. Leroy Coker is my father's brother. That is
why the stories sound so similar. There are two versions of
the Spear story, directly from Spear's children and from
Spear. One is that Spear's mother, Mary M. Coker, was
impregnated by an unknown Cherokee - sometimes he is a
chief. The other story - directly from Spear - is that
Mary M. Coker was a Cherokee princess who was impregnated
by an unknown Coker. (Harrison Coker is named on the death
certificate, and as you probably know, your Leroy's older brother who died in a tragic car crash around 1952, was named Emory Harrison Coker, which gives some weight to this
story.) However, documents show otherwise. Not only have we
not been able to find, so far, any Harrison Cokers in the
family, but; Mary M. Coker is shown as a 4yo daughter of
Robert A. Coker on census records - long before she could
have married. So, Mary was born a Coker. Nevertheless -
a few looks at family photos from Spear to Leroy and his
siblings make clear there is strong Cherokee blood.

Lydia, wife of my Robert A. Coker, was on the 1920 Spalding
County census at about 80yrs old (c1840). Don't remember off
hand. (my computer crashed about a year ago - lost the
census info) I have her death certificate around here
somewhere. She died in early 1920s and is buried somewhere
in Walton County, I believe. A Coker from Social Circle
filled out the death cerificate. I have not been able to
figure out who that Coker was. Other than my grandfather
and grandmother marrying in Walton County (Spear and Nancy
Wages), I have found no other connection between the Walton
County Cokers and my Cokers with roots in Charlton's
family of Franklin - Banks County area.
Robert A. may have married before he married Lydia. Someone
has a marriage record, I believe in Banks County, of a
Robert A. Coker marrying a Lydia House, and for years I
tried to find a Lydia House family in the area, with no
success. However, her death certificate clarified that she
was born Lydia Lewellan. And indeed, Lydia Lewellen appears
on the right census records at the right time and place.
So maybe Lydia Lewellen married a House, then married
Robert A. Coker, son of Charlton. Or maybe he married
two Lydias. Get back and hopefully I will have dug up
this info in document form.

John Vance Coker you stated was born in Tenn?
I am looking for Cokers around the 19th century who were 'placed' in TN by the government. The people I am looking for is a 'wheelwright' or a iron smith. He was put in TN to show teach Indians a different way.
Do you know any such Cokers?
