I want to know what this guy did: James Morgan Coker, 1910-1979, born in Gordon Co., Georgia; later moved to Jackson/Swain counties, North Carolina (along with several other stops in Tennessee, Ohio, etc). He served time in prison in NC in the early 1940s on a chain gang that paved roads on the Qualla Boundary (Eastern Band of Cherokees) and married a woman, Stella Reagan, from there. I don't know if he was in either a state or federal prison, or how many times he was convicted. Supposedly, it was a violent crime involving a road block & shoot-out. In later years, he was a preacher and house painter. He died in the Atlanta/Fulton Co., Georgia area.

I dont think our Cokers connect, recently anyway. My grandmother, Susan Emma Coker (1869-1965) was born and lived in Williamsburg county, SC. Her father, James Myers (1827-1908), was also from Williamsburg; his father Whitley Coker, Jr. (1783-1832) was born in Clarendon and died in Williamsburg; his father Whitley Coker, Sr. (1745-1820) was born in NC and died in SC; his father was John Thomas Coker (1720-1824), born in Virginia and died in NC. I believe his father was also John Coker (1670-1759) born and died in Virginia. Thats all I have.

Boy - that was a long dead "thread", wasn't it? And I've made not progress with the Coker question in SC. But I've been able to put in a lot more time than usual now with no preschoolers about - so will renew my efforts with the Coker line. Will keep your question in mind and would appreciate any information on South Carolina Cokers you may come across. Thank you, Suzannah

Do you find a history with your Coker,Cummings family with any Lee's. I have found my G Grandfather in Woods Co. Tx.
In the 1880 census. He married my GGrandmother Sarah Jane Cummings in 1882 in Sulpher springs Tx, but their first two children were born in Yantis. I know that there is a tie, just don't know where.

This is a Coker genealogy project. Only males of surname Coker descended
from males of surname Coker are eligible.
The Y-DNA is passed from father to son. So a Y-DNA test on you would be
testing your Horne DNA.

I'm the Administrator for the Coker message board and the Coker email list
on Ancestry. But, I don't worry much about what anyone posts unless
somebody complains. Haven't had any serious complaints in years. Nobody
has complained about this topic.
The message boards, email lists, DNA group sites, and web pages I manage on
Ancestry are all components of what I call Forums. Over the last 15 years,
there have been other components that came and went. The 3 Forums I manage
are the Coker Forum, the DuBose Forum, and the SCRoots Forum.
The basic rule I put in place for the Forums I manage is "Don't be annoying,
or easily annoyed." That was the FidoNet rule from my pre-Internet BBS
days.
I'm not annoyed.

Hi Randall,
Which branch of the North Florida Cokers are your ancestors? There are
several Coker branches that settled in that area.

It would be interesting to get some Old Country DNA on the record. Also
doubt Ancestry will care if the recruiting is small scale and limited. I
don't speak for them, and I do subscriber and user of their services. So,
for the record, Ancestry rules apply to these forums.
Hope we get more DNA test results shared this year.

Hi Steve,
Competition is healthy so I don't believe that anyone will mind. You and
I both just want to recruit more members to establish more lineages. We
are both volunteers and gain nothing monetarily. I generally attempt to
recruit new members at the beginning of the New Year. Hopefully I will
reach someone that is unaware of the testing or remind someone who
considered ordering a kit the year before but just never got around to it.
We also need to attract members from the United Kingdom. Wouldn't it be
exciting if we connected to someone from over the ocean.
Warmest regards,
Beth Gay, Auburn AL

Beth,
I wasn't aware of this. I've gone back and checked the message board and
email archives. I see where you posted a notice soliciting donations on Feb
1st.
I have no objection to you recruiting participants for DNA genealogy
research. Wish we could get more volunteers to participate.
Not sure how Ancestry will like using the Ancestry message boards and email
services to solicit funds to pay for testing at their competitor.

I think that people are reluctant to participate, number 1, because they
don't
understand the technology. Most of them don't have a clue how their saliva
could
show they might be kin to 7X great-grandpa John (1630-1704). They will put
more
credence in anecdotal information mangled down through the generations.
Number
2, there have been scare tactics used about DNA being used to deny health
insurance benefits (like freedom, life). I think people are very nervous
about putting
their DNA (or anything they are not sure of the value) in the hands of
someone they
know, never mind a stranger.

When I volunteered to become the adminstrator of the DNA site my cousin had already been tested and had no matches. Well when you have no matches you begin to wonder if you really are a Coker. But having so few members, 16 presently, that is not a very good baseline to draw conclusions. Thankfully since then we have established that we are related to 2 other members; however we have not found the ancestor that connects us.
How can DNA testing help you? You can save countless dollars and time by eliminating lines that DNA testing proves unrelated. If you are lucky enough to establish a connection with another member you can concentrate your research in a defined area.
There are so many lines that I have knowledge of that have no test subjects. Please consider donating money.
If one does donate money and we have enough money for a test that I need to have some type of guarantee that the person who receives the kit will actually do the test and return it. Do you have any suggestions on how to guarantee that? The reason I ask is because I paid for a kit for a cousin who agreed to the test and then backed out. I have requested that he return the kit to me but as yet my husband is out several hundred dollars and my cousin still has the kit.
