Trying to locate Coker's in Florida. We cover Lake City, Wabasso, Aucilla, Madison and all throughout different parts. I know that my grandfather's father was Hector Coker and his father and mother were James and Caroline Coker. I don't have Caroline's maiden name. Caroline had three children, Hector, Lula and Mary any information would be helpful.
Thanks

Congratulations, I haven't talked to you in so long. I have sort of put the Cokers aside when I became 80 and Joe broke his hip, but I would love for you to give me what you think is the connection beginning with John Coker (I think son of Whitley Jr) back to the very beginning. It seems strange to me for him to be the son of Whitley Jr. and not receive any mention in will, property, or anything--maybe he is not even that line. Remember if you find your shoes in the refrigerator and forget when you put them there, you are OK, but if you find your shoes in the refrigerator and think they belong there look out--"its coming". So far I haven't done either. Glad you are guiding the Coker's again. As ever, Mary Frances Heriot Coker, 1153 Coker Street, Turbeville, S. C. 29162.

I found that information as well. I emailed Peggy over the weekend to see if she had anything else. I'm confused with who Vashti's parents were. I'm finding people saying Dempsy was a brother, not the father.
??
It seems that Vashti and her family have been researched a lot but I can't seem to find anything concrete.

I am looking for information on COKER. My 4th Great Grandmother was Vashtigera Coker daughter of Dempsy Coker and Linda Iron. I know Vashtigera was born somewhere in Alabama about 1825. Vashti married William Alexander Conn. Any info is greatly appreciated.
The only known daughter, Vashti who married Alexander Conn. There is no absolute
proof on this but circumstantial evidence leads us to this conclusion. It is
believed that the wife of Dempsy Coker who came to Alabama in the early
1800's was Linda Iron. This information was taken from oral histories
collected by Gene Simmons in the 1970's in Washington County, AL. Vashti's
son named one of his sons Dempsey and their daughter's name was Mary Linda
Conn.

She was born to Dempsey Coker and Linda Iron Coker. She was part native American. I have some information on Dempsey, but have been able to find nothing on Linda Iron or her family. Could someone please help me? Thank you, Vivian Conn Averett

Hi,
I've been researching my ggreat-grandmother Pauline/Paulina/Pelina Carr. I found today that her name was actually Pelina Conn which led me to records of her mother (my gggreat grandmother) Vashti Coker.
I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on Pauline Carr before she married James Collier and it seems they changed her name at some point in Mississippi.
I would love to share any information.

I may be able to clear-up some of the confusion on the two Louisa Cokers who were born and raised in Pike County, Indiana. One was born to Jesse Coker in the early 1830's. She later married Daniel Davis.
The other was born to James Coker, the brother of Jesse. This Louisa was born either late 1840 or early 1841. On May 22, 1855, she married Clinton "Emory" Chappell. Emory is my Great-Great-Grandfather. They had two children: William Chappell in 1858 (Pike Co.) and Nancy Ellen Chappell in 1864 (Pike Co.)
The proof I have on this follows. Please let me know if you'd like copies of any of this information:
1. Original marriage application between Nancy Ellen Chappell and George W. Sanford lists her parents as "Louisa Coker from Pike Co., Indiana" and "Emory C. Chappell from Pike Co."
2. Original marriage license between Louisa Coker and Clinton Chappell. I'm assuming Emory was really his middle name, but he went by it for all of his life.
3. 1860 Census showing "Louisa Chapel" and "Emory Chapel" in Hart, Warrick Co,. Indiana. William is listed, along with Emory's sister? cousin? Frances Chappell, age 18.
Emory was remarried and had one more child by 1867 (he had also moved to Madisonville, Hopkins, KY. But William and Nancy continued to live with him, so I suspect Louisa died at childbirth when Nancy was born in 1864. The 1880 Census lists "Emery Chapel" with his 3rd wife, Malissa and "Ellen" (Nancy) and Job L. and Joab. William is listed as a servant for the household next door... he's age 21 by then. They had moved by that time to White County, Illinois.
Again, since Louisa never appears in any Census after 1860, I suspect she died between May 1864 and late 1866.
Hope this helps!

You may be looking for a marriage that was not documented in American State laws. Many times if there was an Indian union, it was only documented int he tribe, if at all. I have an ancestor ( who was of another line )who also lived in the Areas the Cokers did, and her marriage was like this. If the man claimed her for a wife, and they lived together as such, esp if they had children, then she was his wife. (many of times this was the Indian way) I believe this was probably what happened even to between the parents of my Dicey Coker, since we can not seem to prove her parentage either, and were told her father was Leonard Coker.
