William Buck Coker was not married to any American Indian women. His brother and one of his sons were, however. The problem with this family line is that so many relatives had the same name. If you are looking for Indian - Osage or Cherokee heritage, look at Joseph, Leonard, and "Bill" also known as Dancing Bill Coker who is not the same as Buck.
Lynn-Marie Fancher, gggg drandaughter of Buck Coker

I knw there are many Cokers listed in Oklahoma on the Dawes Census Records. Try to find their applications and card numbers, Do any of them descend from this Cherokee Joe Coker? I find a William, Charles, Seaborn etc. Who do the come from? The applications should tell who they are related to.

There is a George Wood who also married one of my distant cousins there in AR, (also connected to the Cokers). She was a desc. of Williama A. D. Proctor and Nancy Holland. William A. D. is the older bro of my ggg grandmother on my Proctor side of my family.
By the way my Dicey is spelt this way, not Dicie. My Dicey used this spelling on her marriage recorded in 1852 in Pope Co AR to my gg grandfather. Our family thought she may have actually been named Lidicia or Ladicia, but, not sure. Since she was half Indian I tend to think she may have had an Indian name they could not pronounce and this was short for it. We believe this was probaby an child born out of wedlock, since we can not find proof of her, before her marriage in Pope Co to my gr gr grandather. However she used the Coker last name.

I am also interested in Leonard Coker. I see where he traveled all over the Indian lands in upper AR, buying land. Yes , back then alot of Choctaw, Creek and Cherokee lived in this area. They have a strong history in lower MO and upper AR. many of them came to AR before the Trail of Tears and fought amoung themselves for hunting areas, the government had to set a line for each of them to follow. many did not want to obey this. You can get this history on the Arkansas History sites. I am told my great grandmothers mother may be one of Leonard's children born during his wanderings, by a Cherokee woman. No one can place this woman in the Coker family so far, but, we know whe used the Coker name and was b. in AR in 1833-34. She married young to a much older man and either died bef. 1860 or left and went back to the family she knew . We have not been able to find proof of anything about her, even though she lived in AR. My lady is Dicy or Dicey Coker. Her grandaughter al!
ways said her mom (Dicey's daug) said Leonard was supposed to have been her father. I would love to know more about this man and his travels.

Would those "wives" be Amy Coker and Cynthiana Rogers? Being dencendents of this same "Buck" Coker we have yet to find concrete info that he was actually married to Cynthiana Rogers but are still looking. We are also looking into any info concerning John Rogers, Cynthiana's father. We have found some info if it's the same John Rogers that indicates that he came from Scotland and was made a Chief by the Cherokee indian. Any info would be greatly appreciate. Thank you :)

Well, it looks like I was wrong. I am the designated "Manager" for the
SCRoots, Coker, and DuBose message boards on Rootsweb. It doesn't look like
there is much managing to be done. The boards are configured and managed
independently of the mailing list. They pretty much manage themselves.
But, if anything needs attention, it looks like I'm designated to attend to
it. if anyone needs me to do something specific about the boards, email me.

Subject: [SC] Message Boards vs Mailing Lists
I was recently asked who was in charge of the message boards. The "boards"
were created and are managed independent of the mailing lists. For
assistance with message boards, check with the online Help Desk.
I've managed the Coker, DuBose, and SCRoots mailing lists on Rootsweb since
the 1990's. Since before Rootsweb was bought by Ancestry. Years ago, I
would read every message that came through the mailing list. And respond to
many of them. But, these days I seldom look at the mailing list messages.
And I usually only get involved when something needs my attention, or a
subscriber reports a problem to me.
The "boards" were created after the mailing lists already existed. I did
not create any of the boards. I have rarely looked at the boards. When
Rootsweb created the boards, they made it optional for the mailing list
owners to allow messages posted on boards to automatically post into the
mailing list. I turned on the function to allow messages from the boards to
automatically go into the email distribution.
Messages posted on the board show up in the email distribution. But, it is
a one-way function. Replies to emails do not go back to the board. If
someone posting a message on a board is not a subscriber to the
corresponding mailing list, then they will not receive any replies sent to
the mailing list. Unless they search the mailing list archives for them.
In summary, the boards are independent from the mailing lists. I don't
manage the boards. There is a one-way flow of messages from the boards into
the email lists.

Can't seem to find James & Olive (McDaniel) Coker in any of the census records for Edgecombe County, NC. Any ideas? Would like to learn more about this family, especially children John and William. Seems that John had a daughter named Sarah Frances and William had a son named James Richard. These two cousins married and that's the current family line I'm trying to trace. Any leads appreciated.
