My grandfather was Curtis Coker, born in 1910 in Paris, Tx, died in 1986. I understand he was a musician and his father was a twin. He married Martha Ann Williams and fathered my father Curtis Eugene Coker. He remarried Dollie Mae Shaw in 1940 and had a daughter named Laurie. Any help anyone can send about him or his parents would be appreciated! Libby Coker Hintz

I'm searching for a relative named Phoebee Elizabeth Coker who was born around 1890 in McComb, Illinois. I don't know her mother or father's name except for Coker. Her father was a full-blooded Indian according to family stories and he died while digging a well somewhere in Illinois or Missouri. Her uncle was helping to dig the well and tried to save him. The uncle's name might be Marion Coker. Phoebee's mother remarried at some point to someone last name of Downey.

Curious about this Cylus Coker. What year was he born and where and when did he die? I think there is another Daniel Perry Coker who was probably a son of William Coker and Jemima. William Coker was in Bibb County, Alabama. His probable son Dock Perry Coker moved to Louisiana and then to Texas.

Hi Alfreda,
I did check the Final Rolls of the Five Civlized Tribes (Dawes Rolls) and there was on Emma Coker. However, there was a Supreme Court of Oklahoma decision involving her. The government claimed that the Emma Coker on the rolls was fictitious. The Supreme Court of OK ruled that she did exist. However, that particular Emma Coker was the wife of James Rabbit and they were the parents of Amos Rabbit. Sheh was married to James Rabbit at the same time that "my" Emma K. Coker was married to Thomas Hannon. In any event, that Emma Coker turns out to be a different Emma Coker.
I actually wish she were Aunt Emma on the Wizard of Oz. She'd be easier to find.
You've probably noticed another response to my message which shows Thomas Hannon in the 1930 census. I've seen him listed in that census and I believe it is him. He's in Washita County, OK, lodging with a Holman (sp?) family. It shows he's married but I can't find his wife in that census, who I suspect is still Mary A. (Coker?).
So yes, Aunt Emma sounds much more doable!
Thanks for your help, by all means. And thanks to the guy who shared the 1930 census also. I appreciated that.
Eric

My Francis C. Coker's death certificate says he died in Piney Grove, Sampson Co., NC on 24 Nov 1927 at the age of 86y 3m 5d which would put his birth date at 19 Nov 1840 (all birth dates from this era are subject to error).
His wife Sarah Ann Dawson was born in LaGrange, Lenoir Co. and died in Sept 1889. After his wife's death he relocated to Texas and then to Oklahome with his three oldest sons.
1900 Census - Living with son Joshua and family in Custer Co. OK
1910 Census - Living with 2nd wife Phoebe (Phebia) Harris in Lenoir Co. (she died 21 Sep 1915 In Wayne Co. NC)
1920 Census - Living with son Retious and family in Sampson Co., NC
The info on his death certificate was supplied by his youngest son Windson Bert Coker.
The info I am seeking is his ancestors and his wife's ancestors. I have fairly well documented their family.

I am looking for info on the families of Francis Coker who married Sarah/Sallie Dawson in 1862 in Wayne Co., NC and Martha A. Coker and William Hardy Coker, brother and sister who both married into the Waters/Warters family in the 1850's. It is possible that Sarah Dawson and Martha and William Hardy Coker are half siblings. If so, their mother is probbably Mary Jones who first married a Coker and then married Joshua Thomas Dawson of Lenoir County.

Yes. Thank you for that clarification.
Have you looked through the index of the Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes? (Dawes Rolls)
There are Cokers in NW Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and amond several of the Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma.
The name Emma was a usual name in that time period, and I recall an Emma, but that could have been Aunt Emma on the Wizard of Oz! Just kidding!!!
I do recall an Emma. I was talking to a relative on the Coker side just yesterday and we both reminisced about Aunt Mandy (Amanda Coker). She was full blood Indian but when I remembered her, she was an older woman of 60-70 with an extremely light (white) complexion and white hair. I coudn;t believe she was my great aunt Mandy! We all had Indian color of skin as children and still do.
Take a look at the abov and let me know if you find something.

Message Board Post:
Hi Alfreda,
The family story is that Thomas Hannon married Emma Katherine Coker. What few records we have of Thomas and Emma indicate they were born in Texas. The only census they show up in as a family is the 1910 census of Texas, Comanche, OK. Texas is actually on teh 1910 census as the township in Comanche County, OK, in which they are find. So this is Texas Township, not the state of Texas.
In that census their children are listed as James B. (age 13), Henry L. (10), Gladys A. (8), Georgia L. (5), and Cleo P. (2). The census indicates that all the children were born in OK and the parents show up as having been born in TX. Two obituaries I later found show that two of these children were born in Ardmore in Carter County, OK.
According to the family stories we hear, Emma was at least part Indian. However, we have no proof of this. We've heard that she was getting Indian benefits from both TX and OK.
The same family stories say that Thomas Hannon divorced her and married her sister. It is my suspicion that the Thomas Hannon who is in the 1920 census of Hickory Township, Love, OK, is the same Thomas Hannon. If I am correct in this assumption, then the Mary A. Hannon he is with would be Emma's sister. Family stories say that those children--Luster, Leslie, and Lula--were Mary's children who were born out of wedlock.
Sometime after Thomas divorced Emma, she and her chilren ended up in California where they all died. I do not know what happened to Thomas Hannon or to his second wife.
I'm sorry if the states are confusing. Rest assured that the whole family is confusing for us. All we know is that records indicate Thomas and Emma were born in Texas, but the only census we have of them together is that 1910 census in Texas Twp, Comanche, OK.
Thanks for the insights into the name Luster. I couldn't figure out if I was reading that name correctly, but your insights lead me to think that I was.
Does any of this clarify my original message? If not, just let me know.
