The preliminary trial of Joe H. Keller for the shooting of W. T. Coker, on the night of the 5th instant, was begun before Justice Frank Tuesday morning and was concluded at midday Wednesday. The decision rendered by Mr,. Frank was that it was a case of manslaughter and therefore bailable. He affixed the defendant's bond at $12,000, which was promptly given. Great interest was manifested in the trial throughout and the courtroom was packed at all times with curious spectators.

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 15 April 1892 ...
Will Coker, an account of whose shooting appeared last week, gave up the ghost at 12:20 o'clock Tuesday afternoon after lingering almost a week from the time his injuries were received. Throughout this period of agony the wounded man displayed a courage and fortitude that was amazing and he remained hopeful of his recovery up to within a very few hours of his death. No decided change for the worse could be noted in his condition until Monday night, when he began vomiting, and complained of the bilious feeling. The doctor administered a remedy to please him and then told father and brothers that the end was nigh. At eight o'clock Tuesday morning Justice T. L. Frank was sent for and to him the dying man made a statement of the difficulty and the manner in which he cam to be shot. This statement almost coincides with the account of the affray as it appeared in last week's Times-Star and is as follows:
"On Tuesday evening, April 5, I was going down Moore Avenue and came to the corner of George Matthew's saloon. Jake Keller and Charlie Howard engaged in a fight there. Jake Keller drew his pistol and I interfered to stop the difficulty and Joe Keller came up and shot me in the back as I turned he shot me in the arm and as I faced him he shot me again. I sant to the sidewalk and Joe Keller said something with an oath, but I don't remember what he said. I did not have a pistol or stick drawn on anybody and did not intend to hurt anybody. My intention was to stop the difficulty."
About four hours after he made his dying declaration he was dead. Later in the afternoon Drs. Stroud, Powell. Parsons and Dumas held an autopsy over the remains at the request of Mr. W. T. Coker, but only one of the two balls in the body were found. The ball which entered the back struck the sharp edge of the spinal column and was split, part of the bullet remaining on the outside of the bone and the other part penetrating and almost severing the spinal column. The ball which entered the breast struck a rib and took a downward course and passed through the liver. This ball was not extracted. The result of the autopsy establishes that the bullet which struck the spinal cord was the one which produced the paralysis of all the lower part of the victim's body and ultimately caused his death,
The remains were taken to Allen, Collin County, Wednesday evening and interred beside the grave of Mrs. Coker Thursday morning.

I am looking for any Cokers that had a trade of Blacksmith and who was sent by the Gov't to Tenn. to show the Indians a skill and help in blacksmithing.
This could have been prior to 1815. Seems the elusive Coker was single and white.
Any help is appreciated.

Gary,
I just found this after years of not being able to figure out how to access old posts. Obviously, I'm not very good at this. My name is Pamela Seba Calderone, daughter of Pearl Anna Brown, who was a daughter of F. Grace Brown. If you're still out there, please get in touch.
