Hello list,
Does anyone have information on James R. Coker and Emaline Coker? They
are children of Hardy or Hardeman Coker. He was in Walton County by
August 1827. Probably married after this time and before the census in
1830. He is enumerated in the 1830 and 1840 U.S. census in Walton County
but cannot locate him afterwards. He was born about 1800.
I just found this listed today on the USGenWeb site for Walton County
History.
The Commissioners of the Poor School fund of Walton County, Georgia
allocated funds for the school year of 1841 for James R. Coker and
Emaline Coker. Hardy Coker is named as a parent.
Best,
Beth G.

I descend from Buck's daughter Jane who married Charles Sneed. Many records have her listed as Nancy Jane and this is incorrect. Jane married Sneed and Nancy married William Wood. There are many Leonard Cokers in this family, but the son Leonard is difficult to track since he didn't really hang out with the others. I am at work and don't have all my records, but Leonard was in the 1840 census of Sugar Loaf Township in Marion County Arkansas. In 1869, the boundary lines changed and Boone Couny was created out of the eastern half of Carroll County and the western half of Marion County, so don't rule out any of those counties when you are looking. I have Charles Coker in VA at the time his son William Buck Coker was born. Buck married Judith Moore around 1786 and they are in the 17890 census in Burke Co NC. IN the 1780 census we find Buck in a place called the Globe Settlement in NC. I am also looking for Charles' wife's name!

In my earlier post, I said that Buck Coker had a brother who had relationships with American Indian and/or African American women - I meant to say that that was one of his sons, Joseph Dempsey Coker. The last wife that he aquired was named Cynthia Rogers, and she is believed to have been the daughter of a Cherokee Chief. The other gal he was "married" to at the same time was Ainey and there strong suspicion that she was part African American/part Osage Indian. Not proven. His first wife was a Brown (caucasian) who was the sister to the man who married one of his sisters. It's a big family!
But again, Buck Coker and his immediate family where of English descent with no American Indian.

William Buck Coker had no personal Cherokee Connection, although, one of his brothers married three women at the same time, two of which were allegedly Cherokee, but one may have been African American. William Buck Coker ( my gggg grandfather, was born most likely in North Carolina. His father was Charles Coker and his ancestry was English. The Cokers were connected to the Seymour family in England. Buck Coker married around 1786 in NC to Judith Moore of Flavainia County VA. Judith was the daughter of John Moore and Judith Walker - they were also English. Buck and Judith can be found in the Globe Settlement in NC in 1780 and in Burke Co NC census in 1790.
I have a picture of my ggg grandmother, Jane Coker Sneed when she was a recent widow in the 1860s. She had very fine hair that appears to be a medium brown. She has very creamy skin and dark eyes. Her features are very English. Her cousin, Joseph Coker married a ggg aunt of mine. Their children all had auburn hair with pale blue eyes. While there is strong tradition and I think verifiable that Buck's son had multiple relationships - of which at least one was American Indian (type unknown), there was no American Indian blood in Buck's line.
Hope this helps.

Fantastic Bob. I received a reply from my first cousin and he is
transferring his results to the Coker DNA project. If you know someone
already skilled in analyzing the DNA data let me know. I will continue
studying.

Beth what is the procedure to follow to become part of the DNA project. My
clan are still in England and Australia in both places we have direct Male
lines to William Coker of London who was born in 1785 Great Yarmouth,
Norfolk ,England. This Family from William used the Coker Surname but some
of Williams siblings had Cooker or Coaker on Baptism documents. William
father marriage certificate has Cooker or Coaker ( Document has mold
problem )But his Freeman Papers give Coker. Francis father William show on

Hi Brian,
There are instructions on the home page, but if you have any specific
questions you can email me or Terry Barton. Terry Barton has much more
knowledge than I so if it is a complicated question send it to Terry.
Basically you enter your pedigree; start with your earliest known
ancestor. Then you order your kit which is generally mailed to you the
next business day. You follow the instructions with the kit and mail it
back. The turn around time for the results is usually 2 or 3 months. A
minimum of 25 markers is recommended. You can upgrade to more markers at
a later date; the $ amounts are posted on the site.
I will also add the surname variant Cooker and Coaker to the list. Terry
Barton also has Coke on the list which appears to be a distinct family
from the Coker family, but I will leave it until someone requests a
split. Sometimes old documents are hard to decipher whether the name is
Coke or Coker.
The test needs to be done on a person who has the surname Coker or
variant. For my family, I have a first cousin who has been tested for
another family line ; I have asked him to add his results to the Coker
surname page. All of my uncles are deceased. I hope to convince a
grandson of a great uncle to participate. I feel if these 2 Cokers are
matches then I would have a base line for my Coker ancestors. If not
then I will need to find more subjects.
Brian, I am new to this. Nobody seemed to want to assume the role of
administrator so I decided to do it but I would welcome someone that
already is familiar with analyzing the DNA results. I am studying the
subject.
I am pleased that you are interested. We need participants from the
world of Cokers.

Yes, that's the same Thomas and Margaret. I think she was widowed before arriving in AL, but that's just a guess. They later moved on from Washington Co. Al to Lauderdale Co. MS. I've not heard of a GA connection with this family.
So are you saying that Thomas Jackson Coker was the son of Caleb and Mary?
Any idea what the source of the other researchers' information was?

I received my info from other Coker researchers years ago. On it had that they were married in Sumter Co. It also has him born there. What I have is that Thomas Coker was the son of Thomas Jackson Coker and wife Elizabeth. Thomas the son of Caleb and Mary Coker from VA.
I do not know where or when Thomas died. Assuming it was either Georgia or Alabama. Margaret widowed moved with son Peyton to Vimville, Lauderdale Co. Mississippi. Where she is buried in the Cokers Chapel Cemetery, Vimville, Lauderdale Co. Mississippi.

I came across an article on GENEALOGY BANK COM. The article was in the
Columbus GA Daily Enquirer, dated March 17, 1899. It stated that a Delilah
Coker had died in her cottage, (in Madison County GA), when it burned. It
said that she was living on the plantation of a John A. Berryman and she was
said to be 104 years old. Does anyone know of any Coker/Berryman
connection. I am a descendant of James (Jim) Coker of Madison County GA.
Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
