Seeking additonal information on this family. I have just started
entering data on this family on WeRelate. There was a daughter of this
couple said to be living in Walton County, Georgia at the time of John
Coker's death in 1890 in Morgan County, Alabama.. Does anyone know which
daughter? His daughter Elizabeth was evidently living with her father in
Morgan County at the time of his death.

Hello everyone,
Looking for someone to research families that have the above names.
There must be some connection; particularly with the name Mansel Coker.
Does anyone know why and when the name Mansel appeared in the Coker family?
There are three Mansel's that I have located to date; probably more. One
Mansel Coker is found in the 1850 census in Murray County, Georgia. He
moved to Comanche County, Texas and died there; I assume he was a son of
Robert Coker and Elizabeth unknown from Walton County, Georgia and then
Murray County, Georgia. The second Mansel Coker is found in the 1850
census in Tennessee. The third is a son of James Coker and Rebecca and
you will find this family in Gonzales County, Texas. James Coker is said
to have married Rebecca Bonner and is said to be a son of Peyton Coker
of Washington County, Alabama and then Lauderdale County, Mississippi by
a first marriage.
The Robert Coker of Murray County, Georgia also had children in his
household named Leonard Thompson Coker and Peyton L. Coker.
There are numerous Leonard's so I will not mention them all here. John
Coker and Martha Ellen Doyal Coker of Walton County, Georgia and then
Chattooga County, Georgia had a son named Leonard Franklin Coker.

You are right. I must have gotten my wires crosssed. David J and John S H also lived in Blairsville in 1870 a couple of houses apart. David died a couple of years later and John S H shows up in Hall County a little later. David J also had a son named John F.

Looking back through the census records I don't don't see any where David and John S.H. lived in the same household. What do you have that shows this?
In 1850 John lived with Carlton but David isn't listed with them. In 1860 and 1870 they both lived in Banks Co and were only a few households apart.
I have no proof they're related but David did name a daughter Matilda, maybe after Matlida Charlton's wife? David is about a year younger than John.

Mike,
I see you're from Gwinnett Co and was wondering if you ever visit the cemeteries? My GG-grandfater William Taylor Pitman is buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church and I'd like to get a picture of his tombstone if possible. I'm not sure if his wife Charity is buried next to him.
I live in Texas so I don't know when or if I'll make it over to GA.
Thanks,
Walter

Unfortunately I don't have any information about Emory Spear Coker. There is a story that one of my ancestors was an Indian "princess". I have no proof it's true either. I hadn't worked on my genealogy in a while so can't tell you who it was off the top of my head. It was either a Coker or a Pitman. Tallula Pitman married Walliam M. Coker, John S.H. Coker's son.
I will go through my records and see what I can find.

I am from Gwinnett Co and I was looking because I had seen Emory Speer in Gwinn before and could not place him with my family. The Emory you have in Tenn is not the correct age for this one because by his draft card he was born 11/30/1884 and this one was married to a Nancy Wages and her family was in the same place as my Cokers were.I tried to find the Mary you have as his mother but can't be sure about her.

I too am searching for links in my Coker family. I am a descendant of David Jackson Coker. A Mary Coker lived in his household in Franklin County as well as an elderly Elizabeth. I think this is the Mary that Charlton and others paid taxes for. John S H Coker also lived in the same house hold as David J Coker for a period of time. John S H Coker and David J Coker were together or lived close to each other through out their lives. I don't know who David J Coker's parents/siblings were but there has to be a connection with these other Cokers.

I am descended from Charlton through Robert A. Coker and his wife (Lydia?) They had a daughter, Mary M. Mary had one child, Emory Spear Coker, who was my grandfather. The family story is that Mary was impregnated by an unknown Cherokee Indian, which is why I have the Coker the last name. Spear's death certificate lists his father as Harrison Coker, so I cannot rule that out. On the 1920 census, Mary M. (Coker) Summerville is listed in Spalding County, Georgia, with her mother, Lydia Coker, living in the household. I have been told that Lydia was born a House, but have been unable to confirm that. On various census records Lydia is listed as Lilly, L. E., and various. On the 1930 census for Knox County, Tennessee, Mary M. Summerville Coker is listed in the housedhold of her son, my grandfather, Emory Spear Coker, and his second
wife, Edna. I can only assume that (Lydia House) Coker died
between 1920 and 1930 and is buried somehwere in Griffin, Georgia.
Back to John S. H. - are there any photos or other nifty nick nacks of educational value left behind by John that you would care to share? Or any other items of interest that might have any kind of clue that might help me unravel
the many mysteries of Spear's family? I have clues that the family may have been close to a prominent family that may have been close to the Dorsey family of governor Hugh Dorsey, but they are only clues. I have been unable to locate the family of Lydia (House). I have been unable to locate a definitive Harrison Coker. Do you have any family stories handed down from John S. H. of closeness to the Cherokees of north Georgia and/or North Carolina. Do you know what the S. H. stands for in John's name? Or have any information on John's brothers, Marion, etc.
Excuse my excitement, and the asking of too many questions. I pursued my fathers line some years ago and gave up the chase after going to Banks County and meeting some descendents of Robert A. Coker who knew nothing of Mary M. Coker and Spear, but did know of the other children of Robert A. Anyway, I'll shut up for now. Maybe I'll hear from you, maybe not, but it nice to know there is someone else looking into this line.

Does anyone have documented research on the other Mansel Coker families.
Surely there must be a connection between the families with the name
Mansel Coker. Other than the Robert Coker family, there was a Mansel
Coker in Tennessee who is said to be a son of a John Coker.
There is also another Mansel who is a son of James Coker and Rebecca
Bonner in Texas. James Coker is said to be a son of Peyton Coker in
Lauderdale County from a first marriage; although no one has provided
any proof of this that I can find online.
Coincidence or not the Robert Coker who probably had a son named Mansel
Coker also had a son named Peyton Coker.
Maybe someone could research these other Mansel Coker families.
Best,
Beth Gay
Hello list,
How is everyone? If anyone has original documents, pictures, letters,
etc. on the above family please share. I cannot afford to order every
document. If anyone can help enter the data on this family for
information around 1900 or after, I am doing the research on the fly
from Ancestry and other online data. The faster I can finish this
family; I can start on the next one which will be another family that
first appears in records in Walton County, Georgia. If you have any
questions about WeRelate sign up and find the talk page for User:Beth.
What about DNA testing? Did anyone check out the site already in
existence? Some Coker researcher needs to check out the possible sites
and decide on the site that provides the best results, linking, and
price and handle the DNA site. I do not have the time; but eventually
you will be able to download a gedcom of the lineages that one enters on
WeRelate and use on the DNA site. I would also like to have a page on
WeRelate regarding the results of DNA testing.
Comments are most welcome.
Best regards,
Beth Gay
