It is interesting that so many named their children after the "Swamp Fox"
The Cokers married into my Goates side of the family, the Goates in turn

Francis is a good old South Carolina name. It's use might indicate a
connection with South Carolina. Or, with French ancestry.
We have an important and influential French Huguenot history in South
Carolina. Revolutionary war General Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox, was
famous and his name holds high esteem in the state. My father's grandmother
Elizabeth DuBose was descended from French Huguenots Susan and Isaac DuBose.
My brother is named Francis Gregory Coker. One of his sons is named John

Steve, I'm intrigued that your father's middle name is Francis. Is that a
family name? I have an ancestor that passed through Laurens, S.C. in the
1800-1810 time frame whose name was Francis. His son was also a Francis.
They ended up in Madison County, Florida in 1830's and I don't know what
happened to them after that. Any chance of a connection?
Merry Christmas to my Coker Family,
This is to tell you where to find my Christmas gifts to all my Coker family
and relations.
The first gift to you is that I've scanned part of my family genealogy files
and placed copies online for all of you to view or download. I'll try to
get the rest of the documents scanned and online for you as time allows in
the future. Much of the original research required to locate and study
these documents was done by my Uncle Fred T. Coker and my father James
Francis Coker.
The second gift to you is that I've sent DNA test kits to many of the men in
my Coker family. After they return the test samples for analysis, those
Coker family members who have an interest in such things will be able to
study genetic genealogy and figure out genetic connections. My personal
view is that genetics is not the same as family. A family involves much
more than just chromosomes. It involves things like love, caring, sharing,
and personal relationships. The DNA information is just one aspect of the
overall family picture. You don't need a genetic test to be in my family.
You can find these gifts at the following sites.
http://groups.ancestry.com/site/coker/public/http://groups.ancestry.com/site/dubose/public/
Click on "Request Membership" to join the site. Be patient and wait a
minute or two. The site can be a little slow. These sites require that
your browser allow Java Scripts for some things to work properly. The DNA
comparisons will take some weeks before they are ready to view.
Feel free to share this with other family members.
Merry Christmas and Love to All!

Coker DNA Project.
The two basic DNA tests available are paternal (Y chromosome) and maternal
(Mitochondrial) tests.
1. Y CHROMOSOME TESTS. The Y chromosome is inherited from male to male.
So, only men get a Y chromosome test. The Y chromosome test will tell you
about genetic connections through your father, your father's father, your
father's father's father, etc.
Neither your mother or grandmother passed on a Y chromosome. So, testing
your Y chromosome will not prove connections through your mother or
grandmother.
To use a Y chromosome to test your grandmother's ancestry, you would need to
test a male who descended from your grandmother's father. If you know one
or more such males, you could ask them to be tested and buy a test kit for
them as a gift. If you do that, I'd recommend having more than one such
cousin tested if possible. Cousins on paper might not always be genetic
cousins. Two or more tests give more reliable comparisons.
2. mtDNA TESTS. The mitochondrial DNA is inherited by both men and women,
but only from their mother. So, the mtDNA test will tell you about who was
related to your mother, your mother's mother's mother's mother, etc. To use
mtDNA to test your father's mother's mother's ancestry, you could test
anyone who descended through a female only line from your father's
grandmother.

It has been pointed out to me that my comments about putting the DNA samples
in a plastic baggie could be a problem. If you seal wet samples in plastic,
they are more likely to grow mold or bacteria which can contaminate the
sample. Simply follow the instructions and let the samples air dry. If you
have a problem with a torn envelope like I did, put them in another clean
envelope rather than plastic.

Subject: DNA Testing Kits Evaluation
Here is a report on my DNA testing experience. This week I did the sample
collection and mailed in the samples for both Ancestry and Worldfamilies.
I ordered both test kits on the December 4th.
The Worldfamilies kit arrived on December 8th. The Ancestry kit arrived
December 12th.
Both tests involve scraping the inside mouth cheeks using cotton swabs.
But, the kits and procedures were significantly different.
1. WORLD FAMILIES (WF) KIT:
They sent a wet kit. After scraping the inside cheeks, the swab tip was
ejected into a small plastic tube containing a soapy solution. The tube was
resealed and placed in the return envelope.
The kit contained 3 cotton swab scrapers and 3 plastic tubes.
The instructions were to wait at least one hour after eating and drinking
before each collection.
The instructions were to scrape forcefully for about 60 seconds.
The instructions were to wait at least 3-4 hours then repeat with swab #2.
Wait another 3-4 hours and repeat with swab #3.
After the swab tip was placed in the tube and sealed it appeared well
protected from contamination.
The return envelope did not have prepaid postage. It required a trip to the
post office to purchase about $1.50 postage.
2. ANCESTRY (AN) KIT:
They sent a dry kit. After scraping the cheek, the entire swab was placed
in a collection envelope. No tubes or solutions involved.
The kit contained 3 cotton swabs. Not the scraper type. Not with electable
tips.
The instructions were to wait 30 minutes after eating and drinking before
collection.
The instructions were to scrape for 30 seconds minimum.
This kit required no waiting between swabs 1, 2, or 3. Instead, the
instructions were to use the first swab on the left cheek. The 2nd swab on
the right cheek. And, the 3rd swab on the inside front of the mouth.
When the swab tip was placed in the collection envelope it was wet. The
instructions were to leave the envelope open 30 minutes to let it dry. After
the swabs had been in the collection envelope for a few minutes, they soaked
a small spot on the envelope. I made the mistake of moving the swabs within
the envelope. This caused the wet spot on the envelope to tear exposing the
collection swab. Obviously, this would have increased the chance of
contamination. So, I placed the collection envelope inside a new plastic
baggie and put the baggie into the return envelope.
The return envelope had prepaid postage.
3. CONCLUSIONS:
a. TIME REQUIRED. The AN kit wins hands down. About one hour minimum for
AN versus 7 hrs minimum for WF.
- The WF protocols require much more time and patience. Three samples taken
at least 3-4 hours apart with no food or drink one hour before each sample.
This is a minimum of 7 hours to take all 3 samples. Might be easier to do
this over a 2 day period.
- The AN protocols allow one to complete all sample collections in 5
minutes. Allowing 30 minutes wait after eating and another 30 minutes for
drying and you're ready to mail the kit back after about an hour. Way
quicker than the WF kit.
b. CONTAMINATION. The WF kit appears better on this point.
- Once the cotton swab is sealed in the tube, it looks well protected. But,
if you are more careful with the AN collection envelope than I was, it
probably is okay. Putting the collection envelope in a baggie probably
protects it adequately too.
- The WF protocol is to wait an hour after eating. The AN protocol is to
wait 30 minutes. I have no idea if the extra 30 minutes matters. If it
does, then the WF procedure is better regarding food contamination.
c. CONVENIENCE.
- The aforementioned shorter collection time protocols made the AN kit much
more convenient regarding time.
- Both kits give you a pre-addressed return envelope. But, only the AN
envelope has prepaid postage. I found prepaid much more convenient.
In summary, I think that the AN kit is much easier and quicker to use. If
you are sending the test kit to someone else and you aren't certain they are
dedicated to do the test, then I recommend choosing the AN kit. The
convenience and time required should make it more likely they will complete
and return the samples. If you are ordering it for yourself or someone you
are sure is motivated to do it right, then either kit should be fine.
One unknown that I can't evaluate is the quality of the laboratory testing.
For the purposes of this report, I'm assuming that both labs give equivalent
testing quality. It is possible that could be an invalid assumption.
