He also left money to his "natural son" Tommy Cokerchee, born to Thomas W. and a Creek woman named Lovida, of Tallapoosa Town. He apparently was not married at the time of this Last Will and Testament dated July 17, 1847. Please email me personally at milmickey2719(a)hotmail.com. I have a copy of this will if it is your kin, be glad to send you a copy. Thanks,

I don't have any children beyond those in the will. Perhaps the pension
referred to is from Indian Wars, which ran all the way up to 1832. Or, perhaps
"my father's pension" does not mean that the pension was originally awarded to
her father, but that her father set up a stipend or other for her.

The pension reference below doesn't prove anything, but it is kind of
interesting for a few reasons:
1. The petition of Elizabeth Boyce mentions John F. Coker, who is son of the
Mary Coker of 1850 Laurens.
2. Mary Coker of 1850's daughter Matilda married a James Boyce McKuen.
3. Drury Boyce (who I think may be Elizabeth Boyce's son) is living adjacent
to Garlington Coker on Rabun's Creek in 1823 Laurens (Reference Laurens Co.
Deed Book L, p. 130-131). This Garlington Coker is not Mary's son Garlington,
but the one who was born abut 1790 and married Martha Babb
In any case, all of these Boyce connections may be a clue to Mary Coker of
1850 Laurens maiden name.

Hi Cynthia,
Have you checked Heritage Quest for this pension file? From below is the
soldier William Boyce?
Who is Garlington Coker who died in Texas in 1861?

Hi Cynthia,
The pension file on Heritage Quest is no help with the maiden name Mary
Coker or her husband's name. However, on Heritage Quest sometimes you do
not get the entire pension file, and maybe the file in South Carolina
has different information.
William Boyce is the Revolutionary War vet. He married Elizabeth Nance
in Guilford County, North Carolina in 1779. He died in 1836 and
Elizabeth never remarried. The only other people mentioned are 2 Nances
and a Watts who was the judge in the Laurens District of South Carolina.
Elizabeth Nance Boyce was 83 years old in 1847.

Hello Beth-
No further ideas on finding anything for sure, but Mary Coker's age makes
her a candidate for being a daughter of William and Elizabeth? I have not
found a good reference for the children of William and Elizabeth.

Cynthia,
I would recommend that you order that file from the South Carolina
Archives. Check on line to see if that is possible and the charge. It is
a long shot but if any of Mary's children lived long enough to have a
death certificate recorded that may produce results. Also check
Familysearch.org for William Boyce. Although not always accurate you can
sometimes get great clues that pan out.
That they were married in Guilford County, North Carolina was an
assumption by the clerk in Randolph County, N. C. The records did not
start in Randolph until 1784 and since Elizabeth said they were married
in Randolph and Randolph was split off from Guilford the clerk assumed
Guilford. Anyway the two Nance's evidently signed an affidavit, not in
the pension file on Heritage, that attested to the marriage.
Good luck. I entered the little data that I have in Legacy and will
inform if something turns up. Thanks for sharing.

I think I have e-mailed you before. I am a decendant of James (Jim) Coker.
In the 1860 Elbert County Census my James is in a household with Mrs.F.
Johnston, P.E. Johnston and a Polly Coker. Is the same Polly?

Hello-
The Polly Coker in Elbert in 1860 is not the Polly Coker of Laurens SC.. The
Laurens SC Polly died about 1858 in SC.
I have never figured out who the 1860 Elbert Co. Polly is or what happened to
her. But, I do think she is the M. Coker 30 who is with M. Coker 70 in the
1850 Elbert Co. GA census and that she is sister or other close kin to the Edy
Ann Coker who married Issac Edwards in Elbert.
I cannot find your Mary/Polly after 1860, but a Mary Coker is in the 1880
Elbert Co. GA mortality schedule.

Hello-
The Polly Coker in Elbert in 1860 is not the Polly Coker of Laurens SC.. The
Laurens SC Polly died about 1858 in SC.

I think I have e-mailed you before. I am a decendant of James (Jim) Coker.
In the 1860 Elbert County Census my James is in a household with Mrs.F.
Johnston, P.E. Johnston and a Polly Coker. Is the same Polly?

Hello Beth-
No further ideas on finding anything for sure, but Mary Coker's age makes
her a candidate for being a daughter of William and Elizabeth? I have not
found a good reference for the children of William and Elizabeth.

Beth:

Beth-
I don't have any children beyond those in the will. Perhaps the pension
referred to is from Indian Wars, which ran all the way up to 1832. Or, perhaps
"my father's pension" does not mean that the pension was originally awarded to
her father, but that her father set up a stipend or other for her.

In my previous post, the date of the will was cut off:
The will was made on Nov 21, 1857 and filed in Probate Court,
Laurens County, S.C. on Jun 17, 1858. The original will is on file in
Laurens County Probate Court
Box 243, Pkg. 7.

This Mary/Polly Coker is the mother of Edwin A. Coker and John F. Coker who
show up in Madison and Franklin Co. GA beginning in 1850.
I am not sure of what the name below her is, it could be "Celestia".??
However, most of her children are named in her will, which I insert below. I
believe that this Mary is the widow of a James G. Coker who is in that same area
of Laurens SC in the 1830 census. Most people think that the 1830 James is
"James Geddings Coker" but I do not. The number of children of the James G. in
1830 match Polly's children fairly well, and the witnesses to Polly's will are
neighbors of the 1830 James G.

Polly Coker of the State and district aforesaid, being of a sound and
disposing mind but weak and feeble
in bodily strength, and calling to recollection the certainty of death, do
make and ordain this my last will and testament as follows,
1st. I will that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my
father's pension
if any be it more or less.
2nd. It is my will that the above named pension, be it more or less, be
divided as I shall
here describe. My sons John F., Edwin A., my daughters Matilda and Jane and
my
grandson Lewis Cass to receive one third of the amount rec'd be it more or
less, each
to share and share alike, the remaining two thirds be it more or less, to be
equally
divided between my daughters Nancy, Eliza and Martha M. and my son Garlington
G.
each to share and share alike.
3rd. and lastly, I do hereby appoint my friend Dr. John S. Wolff my executor
to this my last
will and testament.

Hi Cynthia,
I have a transcribed copy of the will. I am very curious as to what the
"my father's pension" refers to. What pension in 1858 would have
provided for the bequests? Lewis Cass is listed in the household of
Tabitha Knight which immediately follows the household of Mary Coker. Do
you have a list of all of the children of Mary?

Thanks for all of the info Dwight...that may be my Asa H but thats unfortunatly not my Missouri...my grandfather was b.1917 and said she died when he was about 10 in Ben Hill County and is buried in Fitzgerald in an unmarked grave.
There are a few Missouri Coker's out there but most of them have Coker as their maiden name.
