Okay, y'all come on and figure this one out; your puzzle for the weekend.
There is also a marriage in Pontotoc in 1863; a Mary A. Coker married
Wm. Rouch on 06 Oct 1863.
Is anyone related to this family?
It is possible that James M. Coker and Mary A. Coker were husband and
wife; then maybe he died in the Civil War and she remarried this William
Rouch..
Still can't find them in 1850 or 1870 but have not checked alternate
spellings for Rouch, maybe it is Rush.

Hello list,
I need some help. Who is this household?
1860 census, Pontotoc County, MS
Elizabeth Coker, age 65, born in SC
James M. Coker, age 23, born in AL
Nancy J. Coker, age 21, born in AL
Mary A. Coker, age 19, born in TN
Trying to search in the 1850 census.
Mary A. Coker is not the one in Tippah Co., MS
Nancy J. Coker is not the one in Coosa Co, Al or Ashley Co., AR
James M. Coker is not the one Choctaw Co, AL or in Tuscaloosa County,
Alabama.
The best I have come up with is a household in 1850 in Coffee County, TN.
Mansel Coker, age 37, born in SC, wheel right
Mary Coker, age 34, born in Tenn
Nancy, age 15, TN
James, 13, TN
Mary, 11, TN
Margaret, 7, TN
Sarah, 6, TN
Martha, 1, TN
William Coker, 19, TN
But this does not really match and there is no Elizabeth. But it does
have a Nancy, James and Mary Coker about the right age.
Does anyone know about this family in MS or the one in TN? Can you find
this Elizabeth Coker in the 1850 census?
I have a record that says that Nancy Coker married a J. W. Schrews in
Pontotoc on 21 Dec 1865. Does anyone relate to this family?
Best regards,
Beth Gay
Hello list,
I have a record from Union County, Mississippi showing a bond was posted
by P. C. Coker and J. M. Noonkester for the marriage of P. C. Coker and
Miss S. A. R. Allen. Both the marriage license and marriage portions of
the page are blank. Nothing was filled in. The date of the bond is 12
August 1884.
Can anyone explain?
In the 1880 census in Union County Peyton Coker is single and living
with his brother, Robert M. Coker.
In the 1900 census he is living in Ellistown, Union County, Ms and
married to Rebecker S. Peyton says that he has been married for 19
years. Not accurate according to the marriage bond. Not sure what the
marriage # and # of children are for Rebecker. Would someone take a look
and give me your opinion? This is indexed under Patente Coker on ancestry.
There are 7 children in the household. The oldest in the household is
Alice D., age 18, and then Malie M. age 17 and the next child listed is
Palmer A., daughter, age 13.
Was Peyton Coker first married to someone else who would be the mother
of Alice D. and Malie M. Alice Coker married G.. E. Jordan on 18 Nov
1906. Does anyone have the death certificate for Alice Jordan? If so who
does it show for her mother?
Another confusion. Rebecker S. Coker, in the 1900 census is shown to be
born in Tennessee as well as her mother and father. It appears that she
was a Noonkester from the information below, if so why is she listed as
Miss S. A. R. Allen. Did she first marry an Allen and should this be
Mrs. S. A. R. Allen.
Anyway, in the 1860 census in Jefferson County, Tennessee there is the
following family enumerated in the census.
Joseph Nooncaser, 28
L. J. Nooncaser, 34
J. M. Nooncaser, 6
John Nooncaser, 5
S R A Nooncaser, 3
I S Nooncaser, 1
Maybe the parents died because in the 1870 census, Rebecca and her
brother John are living in another household as servants.
They are still in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
The household is James Swam[?]
Nooncaser, John, age 15, farm laborer
Nooncaser, Rebecca, age 12, dometic servant
I have not located John or Rebecca in the 1880 census, but I did locate
a person that I believe is her brother in Bainsville, Marshall County,
Mississippi.
Isaac Noonkester, age 20, born in Tennessee, something other than direct
relationship, working for wages, is in the household of Lou J. Foster.
From the transcsribed cemetery records on Rootsweb for Union County,
there is listed a
Paitian Coker, 1853-1947 and Rebekah Coker, 1856-1913 buried at Wilkins.
Is this Peyton Coker and Rebecca above? Does Rebecca have a death
certificate that names her parents?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks Brad, are the heirs of Isaac named in the settlement of his

I am confused. The James Franklin Coker you referred to was born in
1836; he could not possibly be the James Coker referenced in the deeds.
Wrong, James Franklin Coker is the nephew of James Coker(1795) and grandson
of Isaac Coker.

Good morning Coker researchers,
Perhaps we could wake up this list with a roll call, Steve? If so don't
forget to the change the subject line, roll call is not very helpful
when one is searching.
I need some help. I have exhausted my searching capabilities on Ancestry
looking for this family in 1850.
In 1860 the following family is enumerated in the U. S. Census in
Pontotoc County MS, P.O. Pontotoc.
Elizabeth Coker, age 65, born in SC
James M. Coker, 23, born in Alabama
Nancy J. Coker, 21, born in Alabama
Mary A. Coker, 19, Tennessee
I hope this is someone's family and that you can identify the husband of
Elizabeth or maybe a more expert searcher can find the family in 1850.
Thanks for your help.

Hello List,
Are any of you descended from Elijah Coker? In the 1850 U. S. census in
Pontotoc Co., MS he is living in the household of Thomas Stack and
Lucinda. Thomas Stack and Lucinda L. Myers [sic] were married in Autauga
County, Alabama on 05 April 1838.
What relation is Lucinda Miears [Myers] to Sarah Miears, the mother of
Elijah Coker?
Thanks,
Beth G.

The John M (Malachi?) Coker is my direct ancestor. He is probably related
to the Biblical Cokers, but I've never seen enough proof to feel comfortable
claiming it.
I've just located him in the 1850 census. He was born in GA, married first
JoAnn Freeman about 1841 or 2 (based on the first child's age in 1850).
Second wife was Sarah A Wilkes. Again based on census, it looks like
JoAnn's last child was born about 1852 and Sarah's first was born about
1859.
Now it gets interesting for me. I've known this family in Giles County TN,
Lynville P. O., and they are there in the 1860, 70, and 80 census. Their
children appear in later census and other documents. John M appears buying
and selling property from the 60's through the 80's. I've a note somewhere
that he may have been apprenticed in Giles County in the 40's.
So - He appears in the 1850 census in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Wife
is JoAnn Freeman - born in North Carolina, and living with them is Charles
Coker. John is 27 and Charles is 25. They have also a 1 year old son named
Charles. I'm guessing Charles is probably a brother, maybe a first cousin.
Does all of this information, particularly Charles Coker (born in GA) in
Tishomingo County, Mississippi ring any bells with anyone?
Any help, information, or suggestions will be appreciated.

The 1860 census lists a John and Louisa Coker in Edgecombe County, NC. I
have no further information on them and can not connect them to the earlier
Coker line in Edgecombe County. I'm hoping someone else can do so.

I couldn't quickly find this, so I did a Google search. The following are
known as the biblical Cokers because of their names.
COKER family of Elbert - brothers Isaac, Abraham, Jacob and Malachi Coker
settled in Wilkes/Elbert before 1790.
The assumption (not proven) is that John Malachi Coker descended from one of
these.

Hello list,
I am doing some preliminary research on the above family. I have found 2
errors posted quite often online.
#1 - Lucinda, the daughter of Robert Coker, did not marry Joseph Lawley.
Lucinda Coker, appears in both the 1850 and 1860 census census still in
the household of Robert Coker and appears to be single.
#2 - Elijah Miears Coker did marry a Jane Bardin, but Bardin was her
married name. Her maiden name was Meadows and she married William E.
Bardin on 24 Dec 1845 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi.. It makes it much
easier to do research if one has the correct maiden name.

The 1860 census lists a John and Louisa Coker in Edgecombe County, NC. I
have no further information on them and can not connect them to the earlier
Coker line in Edgecombe County. I'm hoping someone else can do so.
The John M (Malachi?) Coker is my direct ancestor. He is probably related to the Biblical Cokers, but I've never seen enough proof to feel comfortable claiming it.
I've just located him in the 1850 census. He was born in GA, married first JoAnn Freeman about 1841 or 2 (based on the first child's age in 1850). Second wife was Sarah A Wilkes. Again based on census, it looks like JoAnn's last child was born about 1852 and Sarah's first was born about 1859.
Now it gets interesting for me. I've known this family in Giles County TN, Lynville P. O., and they are there in the 1860, 70, and 80 census. Their children appear in later census and other documents. John M appears buying and selling property from the 60's through the 80's. I've a note somewhere that he may have been apprenticed in Giles County in the 40's.
So - He appears in the 1850 census in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Wife is JoAnn Freeman - born in North Carolina, and living with them is Charles Coker. John is 27 and Charles is 25. They have also a 1 year old son named Charles. I'm guessing Charles is probably a brother, maybe a first cousin.
Does all of this information, particularly Charles Coker (born in GA) in Tishomingo County, Mississippi ring any bells with anyone?
Any help, information, or suggestions will be appreciated.

Hello List,
Are any of you descended from Elijah Coker? In the 1850 U. S. census in
Pontotoc Co., MS he is living in the household of Thomas Stack and
Lucinda. Thomas Stack and Lucinda L. Myers [sic] were married in Autauga
County, Alabama on 05 April 1838.
What relation is Lucinda Miears [Myers] to Sarah Miears, the mother of
Elijah Coker?
Thanks,
Beth G.
Auburn, AL
Beth G.
Auburn, AL
I am confused. The James Franklin Coker you referred to was born in
1836; he could not possibly be the James Coker referenced in the deeds.
Wrong, James Franklin Coker is the nephew of James Coker(1795) and grandson
of Isaac Coker.

I have not researched Isaac Coker. All I have is the following:

Elizabeth Coker married Lewis Cape on 18 Dec 1806 in Elbert County, Georgia.
So I don't know if James Coker was a son of Isaac or not. I have looked
at the 1830 census records in Henry County, Georgia. Isaac, Elisha and
Henry are enumerated on page 243. James Coker is enumerated on page 223.
The James Coker household consists of:
1 male - 5 to 10
1 male - 10 to 15
1 male - 15 to 20
1 male - 30 to 40
2 females - under 5
1 female - 5 to 10
1 female - 10 to 15
1 female - 30 to 40
Looks like he married around 1811. I don't know who he first married.
In the 1840 census in Henry County, there are 3 Cokers enumerated.
Jacob, James and Ward. I did not check the data on Jacob.
James and Ward are on page 336.
James, line 8
1 male - 5 to 10
1 male - 15 to 20
1 male - 40 to 50
2 females - 10 to 15
2 females - 40 to 50
Ward Coker, line 26
1 male - 20 to 30
1 female - 20 to 30
Then a James Coker married Sarah Beeks on 10 Feb 1848 in Pike County,
Georgia.
I found them in the the 1850 U. S. Census in Pike County on page 443. If
you are looking in Ancestry he is indexed as Jane Coker.
Jas. Coker, age ?6, occupation ?, born in South Carolina
S. Coker, age 57, born in South Carolina
J. L. Coker, 16, miner, GA
T. G. Coker, 10, GA
Jos Hiorton, 24, Clergyman, GA

Hi Dwight,
I have not researched this family. I do have a Sarah (Sally) Coker, who
was a daughter of Thomas Coker who died in Bibb County, Alabama in 1818
(seems so from evidence collected by Elizabeth Jones, researcher), who
first married a John Beeks. John Beeks died in the 1830's in Georgia.
Then on 09 February 1848, Sarah M. [Coker] Beeks married a James Coker
in Pike County, Georgia. Unknown if this is the same James Coker and who
he was married to before, but Sarah Coker is listed in the 1860 census
in Spalding County, GA without husband James, so your death date for
James (1851-1860) fits with the above James Coker.
