How does Boddie's "Southside Virginia Families, Vol 2" compare with
this data? I only have copies of pages 85-89. I presume pages 83/84
might have had some info on this early family. As we know, Boddie
has errors, but could have some contribution to this story.
Weird thing for me is that my Joseph Coker (1799-1881) b. Laurens SC
named first son James Harrison Coker b. 1827. Wonder if he was doing
this as respect for Ensign James Harrison nearly 200 years later? I
don't recall seeing the name in the Coker descendants otherwise. The
father of my Joseph Coker above, was John Coker and wife Dicey
?. This John is probably the son of Joseph and Mary Aldridge Coker
who later settled in Laurens SC. These Cokers can be a mess to prove
out. My Joseph Coker (1799-1881) is buried in the Coker Cemetery in
San Antonio TX. His brother John, b.1789 is also buried here.

Dwight,
Thanks for the information. Now a question for the list. Does anyone on this
list have any evidence that the wife of John Corker [note the spelling] was
Dorothye Bishop? I know that John Corker had a wife named Dorothye but was
her last name Bishop? Could very well be but I have no record of a marriage
between the two, just wondering. I have statements from published books and
nonpublished articles stating such but how did the researchers come to that
conclusion? It is elsewhere stated that his wife was named Dorcas, but I
have no evidence of that either. If both of these conditions are true, it
would appear that Dorcas was the mother of William Corker, and John Corker
married Dorothye Bishop after William had reached adulthood. Also there is
no evidence that this William Corker, referred to as Captain William Corker
had any male heirs. The only son mentioned in transactions regarding John
Corker is William Corker.
Kindest regards,
Beth G.

Thanks for the reply. This is same person but I have nothing to indicate
that John Coker was the son of John Coker and Dorothea Bishop, nor do I have
any proof that Margaret was an Allen or a Clay. Margaret was a legatee in
the will of James Allen, but the abstract that I have gives no relationship.
She very well could be an Allen but one document is not proof. Furthermore
John and Margaret Coker first appear in records in the Isle of Wight in 1677
and they are in other records which indicate that they were Quakers at that
time. In 1682 Jno. Coker was granted an exit. certificate for 150 acres of
land due for importing into the Colony, Surry County, Virginia, for him
selfe, Margt., his wife, and Wm. his son.
So there is no indication that he was born in Virginia. Reason why I am
interested in the English records and particular any existing Quaker
records. Also would love to find them on a passenger list.
How are you descended from John and Priscilla of Brunswick County, Virginia?
Did the researchers provide you with documentation? It would be great if
someone has solved this puzzle.
Thanks,
Beth G.

Does anyone on this list have access to Ancestry for England? If so would
you search for any information on John and Margaret Coker? They were in
Virginia by at least 17 October 1677 and had one son, William. They were
Quakers. They may have been in London, Droitwich, Swarthmore or Bristall
[sic].
Thanks,
Beth G.

I found a site which I was able to find names of individuals who applied for marriage license in Oklahoma as early as 1904. http://www.odcr.com/ I just type in Coker and put the date from 01/01/1900 to 01/01/1960. Just so I would not have hundreds of hits. I think I got 92. Hope this helps.
I was glad to see you give a detailed explaination for the name Coker. Thanks. Sandra

Subject: [Coker] Re: Coker coat of arms
COKER:
There is more than one possible explanation for the origin of the English
surname Coker. In the first instance, the name is of local origin, belonging
as it does to that category of names which are descriptive of the place
where
the original bearer once lived or held land. In this case, the name is
derived
from the place name Coker, the name of two parishes in the English county of
Somerset. The exact origin of the name itself is unclear, although it has
been
suggesteD that the name may denote "(crooked?) river".
Early records of this name date from the 13th century. The Hundred Rolls
for Somerset in 1273 list the names of one Thomas Coker of that county, and
Adam
Coker of Essex. "Kirby's Quest", compiled during the reign of Edward III
(1327-77), also contains a reference to a certain John De Coker (meaning,
literally "of/from Coker"; early forms were often prefixed with "de").
Alternatively, the name may possibly be a variant of (if not simply confused
tvith) the English surname Cocker. This origin of the name can be traced to
two Different sources. On the one hand, it may be a derivative of the Riddle
English "cocken", meaning "to fight". The name was probably a nickname
attributed to a fighter, wrangler. On the other hand, the name may be
occupational in origin (based on the type of work a man once did), derived
from
the Middle English "coke", which signifies "to put up hay in cocks", a
haymaker.
The first record of this name Dates from 1198 when one Henry Cokere was
recorded
in the Pipe Rolls for Kent.
The name was established in the New World at an early date. The original
