By DNA testing in we can be sure who is related to whom. This will tie some
families together who have very little info to use. We need every Coker who

I found my notes. I'm thinking that the G. B. COKER in the 1850 Choctaw
Co., AL census is Green Berry COKER. The online trees show that he
married Juriah GRIMES in 1845 and that their children are the ones
listed in the 1850 Choctaw Co., AL census. However, that is not logical
as Jeremiah is only 11 years younger than Green and James and Seborn
were born before the marriage. Of course, James and Seaborn could be
children by a first wife. Also in Choctaw Co. in 1850 is James W.
COKER, age 49, b. SC, with wife Milly and children Young, Henry D.,
Matilda, Wm. S., Margaret and Fremont. G. B. lives at HH #198 and James
W. lives at HH #190 so there could be a connection. Is anyone familiar
with this family? I'll search the archives and see what I can find. I
don't have access to any of the COKER publications that have been
mentioned in the message boards. I'm thinking that they deal with the
SC COKERS.
Following is the family of Green COKER in the 1860 Choctaw Co., AL
census. I have often wondered if the child listed as 'O' is actually
'A' for Alphin. Alphin COKER was paroled to Davis Co., TX (Davis Co.
was Cass Co. from 1861 to 1871) after the Civil War so it could be him.
Also, Cass Co., TX borders Union Parish, LA which is where Alphin is
living in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 censuses.

Beth, this Sampson and Priscilla Coker are a mystery. They also show
up in 1880 Bexar. Sampson is 79, Farmer and Prisicilla is 81. They
show born in SC as well as their parents. In 1860 they are on Page
251 and my Joseph Coker is on Page 253 - not far away. They must have
arrived after 1850 since they are not in that census. There is no
other information on them and they do not fit into Joseph's family or
his brother James's family which stayed in Cherokee Co TX. They
are not buried at the Coker Cemetery where all the Joseph Coker
descendants are buried. Maybe someone out there can identify
them. It is strange for them to show up here at that age without any
supporting family.
We could keep informing this site and maybe some one who has some extra time
take on the job??? I could help some? Most of the researchers come & go.

Thanks, Beth. I had pretty much eliminated him also but it is good to
have a second opinion. I'm looking at a possible connection to Asa
COKER who was in Union Parish at the same time, but haven't found
anything as of yet.

Hi All,
I trying to trace ancestors of my G/Grandfather Fuller Coker who Married Julia Ann Dutcher (born 1806 in New York). They were married in New York on the 1st March 1837. They had one son called George and a daughter Sarah Ann.
George married Catherine Lynch in York Toronto. then the family came to the UK. Where they had four sons.
Can anybody help me trace the parents of Fuller Coker. I have drawn a complete blank.
Thanks
Bob Rutland (UK)
I need help in finding the parents of my husband's ancestor, Alphin Lee
'Charley' COKER.
So far, I have been unable to locate him in the 1850 and 1860 census.
Alphin is living in Union Parish, LA in 1870, 1880 and 1900 and shows
his birthplace as Alabama. However, the death certificate for his son,
Lee COKER, shows he was born in Atlanta, GA.
His Civil War records show he was paroled at Davis Co. (now Cass Co.),
TX 06 JUN 1865. He was married three times. First wife was Mary
BOZEMAN. Their children were Lee (my husband's grandfather), Mary
Hettie, Willie and Lennie Etter. My husband's father said that that
they are related to the COKERS whose house figured prominently in the
Battle of Champion Hill in Mississippi but I haven't been able to find
the connection.
Below are census transcriptions for Alphin COKER. I will continue to
search for Cokers in Alabama, Texas, Georgia and Mississippi in 1850 and
1860. I would appreciate hearing from anyone on the list who might have
more information or give me other ideas of where to look.
Thanks!

I am going to jump in here with my problem. I had a McDougal family in
Itawamba MS in 1850. There were two children born to Martha McDougal (no
marriage recorded). They are listed in the family McDougal Bible as James
Franklin Coker b. 1852 and Susan Elizabeth Jane Coker b. 1854 born to Martha
McDougal. In 1855 they moved to Polk Co. AR where she married a Man named
Hadaway in 1857, using the McDougal name. Does anyone claim two Coker
children born in MS at that time?

I know that there are many people on our mailing list who have expended much
time, effort, and money in an attempt to solve the Coker puzzle. There is a
lack of family letters and Bible records for our Coker family that other
families have. I am not an organized person but have a lot of data on
various segments of this family not yet entered into any program. Is there a
certified professional genealogist researching this family that could
perhaps coordinate research projects and data done by the various family
researchers? We need one central website or database devoted to our family.
I don't have the time or expertise to do this but would gladly contribute
copies of documents that I have obtained from various courthouses in
Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.
There is also the added ingredient of the new field on DNA research. Perhaps
someone could initiate a DNA project for the Coker family. We possibly could
establish if there is a connection between Caleb Coker and John Coker.
Kindest regards,
Beth G.

Yes. It looks to be suspect as all three of the children were born
before the parents were married.

I an registered DNA/ see http://www.familytreedna.com/contact.html If Bob
would get tested he could be a good subject for his family line. If we were
all matched we would know for sure with some scientific support. It's easy
to do.

There is a Coker DNA project listed on the Family Tree DNA site. I was
thinking of having my dad take the test. I'm at a wall with the paper trail.
Laura Coker-Garcia
I've done some further research on this family. I've come to some
conclusions but more research is needed to accept it as true.
The IGI shows a marriage record between Joseph B. COKER and Mary HOLCOMB
on 10 OCT 1861 in Shelby Co., AL.
I have transcribed the 1870 Census as follows. It contains some
additional information not shown in Dwight's posting:
1870 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Beat 8 Twp. - Columbiana P.O.
Roll: M593-39 - Page 469 - Image 21 of 26 (ancestry.com) - 13 JUN 1870

COKER,
Joseph - 30 M W - Farmer - [blank]/$350 - AL - Unable to read and write
Mary - 36 F W - Keeping House - SC - Unable to read and write
Samuel - 16 M W - Works on farm - AL - Attended School
Frnklin - 14 M W - Works on Farm - AL - Unable to read and write
(NOTE: It does not show that he attended school)
William - 13 M W - Works on Farm - Al - Attended School
Rachel - 7 F W - AL - Attended School

Nora (sic) - 2 M (sic) W - AL
Joseph - 2 months M W - AL
McCLANAHAN,
Leticia (?) - 62 F W - At Home - $40/[blank] - SC Unable to read and write
Using the information on Leticia McCLANAHAN from the 1870 census and the
marriage record of Joseph B. COKER and Mary HOLCOMB, I found the
following in the 1860 census:
1860 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Twp. Not Stated - Columbiana P.O.
Roll: M653-23 - Page 318 - Image 80 of 225 (ancestry.com) - 10 MAY 1860

McCLANAHAN,
L. - 52 F - Farmer - $80/$300 - SC - Unable to read and write
HOLCOMBE,
Polly - 25 F - House Keeper - SC - Unable to read and write
Samuel - 7 M - AL
Frank - 5 M - AL
Wm. Edward - 3 M - AL
L. McCLANAHAN is probably the Leticia(?) McCLANAHAN in the 1870 census
and 'Polly' (Polly HOLCOMBE) was a common nickname for 'Mary'. So, what
it looks like is that Samuel, Franklin and William COKER in the 1870
census are actually Samuel, Franklin and William HOLCOMBE and are the
children of Mary 'Polly' (McClanahan) HOLCOMBE and her first husband.
I'm assuming that Mary was a widow with 3 children when she married
Joseph B. COKER.
Leach Cemetery in Shelby Co., AL shows the following and bears this
assumption out:
HOLCOMBE, Frank 20 Feb 1856 04 Nov 1914
HOLCOMBE, Martishie 09 May 1860 21 Mar 1946 Wife of Frank
HOLCOMBE
I found the family in the 1880 census as follows:
1880 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Calera Twp. - ED #123
Roll: T9-31 - Page 224B - Image 10 of 16 (ancestry.com) - 22 JUN 1880

COKER,
Joseph - W M 42 - Married - Farmer - AL AL AL - Unable to read and write

write - AL AL SC
Benjamin - W M 8 - Son - Single - AL AL SC
Lecia (?) - W F 6 - Daughter - Single - AL AL SC
Mary - W F 4 - Daughter - Single - TN AL SC
In 1900, Joseph has died and Mary is living with her son Leonard as
follows. This agrees with the cemetery records that I posted earlier.
1900 U.S. Census - Alabama - Shelby Co. - Columbiana Twp. - ED #120
Roll: T623-39 - Page 18B - Image 35 of 38 (ancestry.com) - 20 JUN 1900

Mary - Mother - w F July 1832 - Age 67 - Widowed - 10 kids/8 living -
SC SC SC - Unable to read and write
So, this still doesn't solve the problem of who the parents of Joseph B.
COKER are. The IGI shows that a Joseph COKER married Luisa McCAREY 08
FEB 1856 in Bibb Co., AL. Information on the internet suggests that
this Joseph is the Joseph in the 1850 census that I posted earlier. In
1860, they are living in West Side Cahaba River, Bibb Co., AL. In 1870,
Joseph is gone and Louisa is living with her children Nancy J., Mandy,
Mary and America in Township 11 Range 9, Winston Co., AL.
If I come across any more information, I will post it and would be
curious if anyone else can provide more.

Kindest regards,
Beth G.

Beth, I cannot claim Robert Coker as being directly in my line. As I
remember, he is probably a generation or two back from them. I
appreciate the offer, but don't really need the detail on him - at
least for now. No use creating extra work for you or Dwight.
I failed to answer your question about Joseph Coker staying in Bexar
Co. The answer is yes, he and his descendants pretty much hung
around here for many years. I am historian and secty for the Coker
Cemetery here. Two Cokers attend our quarterly Trustee
meetings. Our cemetery is well kept. We have about 220 descendants
who are on our mailing list. We send out a newsletter twice a year
and have an annual meeting with covered dinner. We have about 50 who
attend this annual meeting.
Let me know if I can help.

James had a son named Franklin, Joseph didn't. I don't have any firm
data on Franklin other than birth 1831 and marriage in Cherokee Co TX
to Susan Trimble Oct 18, 1855. I don't have a death date or location
or children. But then I didn't research that group as diligently as
I did Joseph's family.
James had a son named Andrew Jackson Coker who was a doctor. He
was a doctor in the Civil War. Andrew also had 4 wives. Surnames
were McCaller, McCracken, Ragsdale and Gray - between 1855 - 1883.
As far as Commance Co TX, I have not researched those Cokers. Do you
have their names? The Coker name was pretty well spread around, so
they probably are not related.
I am stuck with a James Coker who is in the 1850 census of Madison County,
TN. He is listed as age 38, making him born in 1812. Wife is Ellen. Both born
in North Carolina. Living nearby is John Coker, age 68, Baptist minister and
living with him is Rebecca Coker, age 80. All born in N.C. ANYBODY have any
information on this Coker family? Help!!!

The Cokers in Cherokee TX in 1850 are my "Texas" Cokers. These were
brothers Joseph and James and families. Joseph's family was in Bexar
Co by 1854. The James Coker family stayed in the Cherokee Co
area. Joseph and James Coker were in Talladega AL 1840 census, but
gone by 1850.
