The Clayborn that you are looking for is the nephew of the Clayborn that was killed on Christmas Eve. Amanda Frances Coker is the daughter of the nephew. You can see more info on a site I have created to publish my research on my ancestors. I am adding source information for each person's page in the tree as time allows. I will be updating it later today. Here is the address: http://www.geocities.com/kathy_inis

Are we talking about two Clayborn Cokers? One who died on Xmas eve at the age of 76 in 1874 and another who was the son of Dennis who died in 1878? My ancestor, Amanda Francis Coker b.1854, lists a C.C Coker and Sarah Holmes as parents on her death certificate. I found an Amanda Coker residing with Dennis and Sarah in 1870 who fits the age of my Amanda but to date I am unable to locate Clayborn and Sarah. I did locate a marriage record for a Denis Coker and Sarah Clanton, 27 Jul 1848. I was presuming this could be my Clayborn's brother. Thank you for your time...

On Christmas Eve, 1874, at a dance held at the home of Mathew S. Lewis in Yatesville, Claiborne Coker (April 15, 1831 - Dec. 24, 1874), son of Dennis Coker, died at the hands of a Julius Elmore who was about 22 or 23 years of age. Elmore slashed Coker's throat during a quarrel. In the Jacksonville Daily Journal of Friday, Aug. 23, 1878, will be found a story telling of Constable Matthew Lewis of Yatesville being mortally injured by John (or Jackson) Charles. Charles struck Lewis in the head with a blade of a hatchet when the constable was seeking a son of Charles. However, the Jacksonville
Journal of Friday, Aug. 30, 1878, said that Constable Matthew Lewis was recovering from his "murderous injury". About three weeks after the hatchet attack he was well enough to visit Jacksonville.)

Marriage date is 21 Mar 1850 in Morgan Co, IL. I found a census for Clayborn in Morgan Co, IL which lists his age as 23 along with a mother, Elizabeth, and siblings Sylvester, Catherine, Richard, James, Maria and a possible sibling Dennis living next door. 1860 census lists Claiborn and Elizabeth with only James residing with but age is now 58. 1840 census lists a Clayborn in Morgan Co, children count appears appropriate. Any assistance in finding Clayborn is appreciated.
