The Shawnee News-Star
Shawnee, Oklahoma July 1, 1999
Activities for the 34th annual Coker Reunion are scheduled Friday and
Saturday, July 2 and 3.
The Coker Reunion celebrates the union of London Coker and his wife, Mary
Washburn. Both were one-half Creek Indian, and they were both enrolled with
the Creek Nation. Again this year, an extra day will be taken to tour the
gravesite of London Coker and his children. The tour includes the first
Coker homesite, and begins at 10 a.m. Friday, departing from the home of
Mary F. McCormick, 2039 N. Ideal, Seminole. The home is located 1 mile east
of SH 3 and SH 99, then turn south on N. Ideal. History teachers are
especially welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch
and to wear comfortable shoes and clothing.
Anyone interested in the Coker family, or those who may have stories to
share are also invited to festivities Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the
Kaney Chapel located three and one-half miles east of Bowlegs on SH 59.
Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish for the noon meal. Drinks
and paper supplies will be provided.
Participants may also want to bring photographs or an item for the silent
auction fund raiser.
The gravesite of Mary Washburn Coker is unknown, and organizers of the event
hope someone may have the information to share. London and his wife were
originally from Eufaula and were pioneers in what is now Seminole County.
When they arrived in about 1855, the area was Creek land. The couple settled
and had four sons and three daughters.
The daughters were allotted land in Holdenville, and all four sons married
women of the Seminole Nation and remained in the Seminole area, as did
London Coker. He died in 1919 at the age of 105.
For more information about reunion festivities, contact Mary McCormick,
(405) 382-3836.

moved to Lake City, TN in the 1960's. My paternal grandparent's names are
Jay and Bobbie Coday and they are the parents of Dennis Coday and Debbie

My father Dennise Jay Coday married Martha Louise Arnoled in 1972 and they
are the parents of myself Catherine Denise Coday age 19 and Brandon Lee
Coday age 24.
My family conducts a reunion every year on the first Sunday in May. This
reunion is called the Coday Coker reunion because my great-grandmother was a
Coker before she married my great-grandfather(deceased) who was a Coday.
My grandparents have told me that we are originally from Ireland but there
is no evidence to back this up and I am currently trying to discover my deep
heratige.

James Coker was living in Bergen, Wisconsin in 1861. His 15 year old daughter, Mary A. E. Coker/Cooker married Perry Pruett Jan 1, 1861 at her father's home.
Perry and Mary have a son, James Perry Pruett, Sept. 15, 1862.
Perry dies in Memphis, TN, March 14, 1864 from small pox while serving in the Civil War.
Mary re-marries to Jacob Schmoker Sept 6, 1868.
I am seeking any information on any of these people.

I am fairly familiar with the Cokers in San Antonio, but have no record of
this marriage or John Christall. I have a Mariah E. Coker b. ca 1836, but
in Talladega AL. Her family moved to Cherokee Co TX in 1846. She had two
uncles living in San Antonio (Joseph and John) by 1854.
This Mariah m. Allen A. Atkinson in Cherokee Co 1859. He apparently died
shortly after - maybe CW. They had only one son b. 1860, he was named
Allen Atkinson Jr. My notes say she married a second time, but I don't
know where I got this tid-bit. Mariah's father was James Coker and her
mother was Mary (unknown). This family remained in the Cherokee Co TX
area. Mariah could have come to San Antonio after the CW to visit
family. If any of this makes sense for you, will be happy to discuss.
Footnote - the section of Bexar Co TX that Coker families lived in was
omitted from the 1870 census, so that research won't help. Believe me I
could have used it many times.

I am trying to find out any information I can on a Precillia Coker. She was born around 1865 or so somewhere in Alabama I think around Tuscalooa. Thanks for any info you may have.

wife. On 1810 Sumter census he is 45+ with 3 males under the age of 10 and
