He could related to the Joel M. Coker's in Monroe Co., MS. The town of Smithville, MS is near the border of those two counties were they moved settled after they left AL. Many Coker's still living there.
I need information on a Leonard Coker born around 1790 in North Carolina or
so I believe and according to some records. The only information so far is
that he had one son, a Joseph Coker born around 1810 in Boon AR. Records
indicate, Joseph Coker married a Lucinda Matney and had a number of
children. One of which was my g grandfather William Coker who married a
3rd wife Sara Jane Matney Vance. Their only offspring was my
grandfather William Coker. Just need some information on this Leonard Coker
if anyone out there has information I would truly appreciate hearing from
you. Thanks. vsand(a)sftnet.org

Subject: [Coker] Thomas Coker
I read with much interest the posting on the Coker roots web site about
Thomas Coker. I am descended from one Thomas Coker of Darlington County, SC
near present day Society Hill. I do not have much information on them but I did
recently obtain a handwritten family tree from the Darlington County
Historical Society. It starts with a Thomas Coker I of the Revolution who had 7 or 8
sons and 2 daughters. Three of the Sons, Caleb, Thomas II, James and daughter
Jane Elizabeth. The others were Lewis, Josiah, Hugh and Mary. Could this be the
same ancestry? Sounds like it.
As I mentioned my sources came from the Darlington County Historical
Society. They evidently have a lot of material on these Cokers. Unfortunately I
have never had the time to go there and dig through it.
The Thomas Coker I is mentioned in the book, The Cokers of South
Carolina, as he is supposedly the ancestor or the present day Cokers of Hartsville,
SC the owners of Sonoco Paper Company which has grown into an international
firm. Thomas I evidently had a tavern in Charleston before the Revolution.
Where he came from prior to that is a mystery but perhaps he is the Thomas Coker
from Virginia. After the British took the city in 1780 he went and joined
Francis Marion's brigade and after the war was given land in Darlington County
where he settled and raised his family.
If you have some information or documents I would love to hear more. I
will be glad to fax or mail anyone a copy of this genealogy.
Sincerely,
Priestley Cooper Coker III

Notes for ISAAC N. COKER:
Isaac Coker is believed to be the fifth child born to the union of Jordan
Coker and Mary Humble, born possibly in June 1884. The date of his birth has
not been verified. The best guess is that he was born in Gonzales County, Texas
but there is the chance he may have been born in Bexar County, Texas. He
married a Mary, last name unknown, likely after 1900, location unknown. No further
information on this family, with the exception of two children, has been
found. When or where Isaac and Mart Coker died is unknown.

dwight,
I find it hard to believe these name are not related to the same cokers in Chatham n.c. due to the names all are biblical yet no one can find the relationship to say Malachi Abraham, Isaac and Jacob funny how every named mentioned in both list are all biblical. if you wondering where Caleb disappears to might try looking in Illinois where a john coker and a Margaret coker is and where a son Caleb coker is buried. there also a hanorrah daughter of Claiborne coker seems names in the edgecombe Coker's and the chathom cokers are similar in name so I find it hard to believe that all of these cokers are not related but find the key to the relationship is the issue. the other issue is also this the p.p.&j. railroad in illinoise use to run to guess where virginian. the counter links between these same cokers are very strong but no one can figure this out. the other reason I have to think they do have a relationship ship is because I do have two of those rail road books with the!
civil war story with clipping in them that have been passed down to me from other family relations.

Here is some more info.
NOTE: Thomas Coker came from England to Virginia and thence to Mars Bluff
about 1740. The First Thomas Coker came to Virginia in the 1660's and died
there leaving three sons: Thomas, Caleb and James. The record of Thomas and
James can be followed in Virginia. Caleb simply vanishes there.
About the same time, however, there appears a Caleb Coker in Edgecombe
County, NC. who had sons Thomas, Caleb Jr., James and others, and whose
daughter was named Elizabeth which is the same as that of the wife of Thomas
aforementioned.
It is hard to believe that the Caleb of Edgecombe Co. is not the same as
the Caleb, son of Thomas who disappeared from the records in Virginia or in
England. The first use of the name was Caleb in VA. is accounted for in the
records, since he was named a godfather who made him a gift of Legal record.
It is my belief then that the Line Starts with (8) Thomas coming to VA.
after 1660; (7) caleb, established in Edgecombe Co., NC. (6) Thomas Coker
migrated to VA, about 1740 etc.
NOTES: (6)Thomas Coker is the son of (7)Caleb Coker who is the son of
(8)Thomas Coker.????
Thomas Coker (Corker, Cocker, Cockery) of Rappenahannock and Essex Co.,
Virginia and his three sons.
1. Thomas Coker Jr of Rappahannock and Essex Co. VA.
2. James Coker of Rappahannock and Essex Co. VA.
3. Caleb Coker of Virginia and Edgecombe Co. NC.
Caleb Coker as a son of Thomas of Rappahannock County Virginia
(in a letter from Ann Waller Reddy to Robert E. Coker.)
"Undoubtedly Caleb (Coker) fits for your ancestor and definitely from the
records, he was the son of Thomas and Sarah Coker. Like you I think the
Elder son Thomas Coker was not mentioned because he was already of age and
likely the heir to his intestate father and possibly did not worry about the
younger brothers (James and Caleb) whom he allowed to be bound out. It may
be that Sarah Coker was not the mother of Thomas Corker Jr. but a second
wife to the elder Coker."
NOTE: here are a few items to be used toward the proof! Thomas Coker Jr.
must have been of age at the death of his father Thomas Coker Sr. Caleb was
bound out in 1687. James was bound out in 1688. The widow of Thomas Coker
married Joseph Wyatt by 1694.
Rappahannock Co. VA. Book 11 1686-1692 page 23

Orders no.# 1 Rappahannock page 115 10 Aug 1693
Samuel Tracker in behalf of Caleb Cockley plaintiff - Daniels Deskins having
intermarried with the widow of Caleb Lyon defendant, came into court stated
that Caleb Lyon by his last will 4 Feb 1686, did bequeath unto his god-son
Caleb Cokley now living with the plaintiff one mare foal. The extrix refused
to give the foal, so Tracker claims damages of 2000 llbs. of Tobacco.
Caleb Coker in Edgecombe Co. NC. by 1720 or so!!
Note: Miss June B. Berekman of Chicago beieves that this is correct lineage
of Caleb Coker of Edgecombe Co. NC.

had children quite young. If both Caleb and the elder Thomas had
children around 16, then the dates work out, even at that point. If
the older b/d is right then its a definate possibility that there are 2
Thomas Cokers born within that time.
