Thanks for the direction, I do no recall looking at this site before. I am
showing it for others who may not be familiar with it. I sent an email to
the lister re Mary Polly Coker.

A reference book on the Dial connection to the Cokers is "Martin Dial and
Related Families" by Hastings Harrison 1959. This author was a professor at
SMU. I think most large libraries have a copy. It details the marriages
of Isaac Malcom Dial to the two Coker daughters (cousins) and lists their
descendants. The following is extracted from page 169: He married first
Nancy Amanda Coker in 1801, a dau, by tradition, of William Coker and
Honoria Garlington. (My note - William is said to be oldest son of Joseph
and Mary Aldridge Coker). Isaac secondly married Mary (Polly) Coker, a dau
of Drury Coker, who tradition says was a son of Joseph and Mary Aldridge Coker.
One son of Nancy and Isaac Dial was James Laurens Dial. He lived in Seguin
TX area in the 1850's.
I have a copy of an 1860 letter that James wrote to his brother
acknowledging the John and Joseph Coker who settled in the San Antonio area
were "near relatives". I'll write more on this later.

The James who m. Mary? I have info that she was Mary Bilsay? or something
similar. Can't make it out, it was written in by pencil. This info was
compiled by Valerie Giorgio, in 1974 from Santa Maria, CA and passed on to
me.
She also says John m. Nancy Dial aka Dicey owned land in Laurens Co SC that
he purchased Oct 12, 1791, May 12,1792, May 18,1797. She goes on to say he
died in SC. It lists Dicey as dying in either Ala. or Tenn in 1881 She never
made it to Texas with her sons.

Hi Elizabeth! Good to see you are still watching over things. You have
done so much research on these lines which has been very helpful to
everyone. As you can see, I am trying once more to delve into the
mysteries of John Coker, et al, of Laurens in the late 1700's to early
1800's. I wish the first Coker family had started numbering them as they
went or given them middle names like a lot of Jones families did. I'm
getting ready to put some more "stuff" on here tonight.
I have been reading the messages about JOHN COKER and decided to submit what

Hey Dwight, if we keep comparing notes we might solve the whole thing by
2005. I wonder how long this John was in the Laurens area. There's
supposed to have been a John Coker in the Jackson Co GA area in 1810 or so,
but searching has not turned him up. Somewhere I read of a John Coker in
the Jackson Co area wanted by the law for murder or rape in the early
1800's, but can't find it now.
What I would like to see is getting a discussion going on the children of
Joseph Coker and Mary Aldridge. Somewhere amongst all the researchers may
be documents from new researchers who have discovered letters or bibles
that can provide new insight.
For example, your earlier email stating "Nancy Coker Thompson, daughter of
Joseph Coker
and Mary Aldredge married Frederick Thompson December 28, 1784. Nancy was
born in 1766 and died June 5, 1823," corresponds to same information I had
that was done by a Coker researcher sometime before 1930. I didn't know if
it was valid. So now we have a Nancy Coker who was part of the family.
More later.
Let me muddy your waters some more. My husband's great, great grandfather
was John Coker born probably 1796 as he was 21 on the 1810 SC census. He
married Nancy Lavender and both of them died in the 1840s. They left 4
children. There was also a John Coker who deserted from the Patriot Army
during the revolution. Can't remember the date off hand. There is another
John Coker who shortly this John deserted shows up in the British Army near
Savannah, Georgia. I will look this up if you want to add them to your
search. Ours are all SC Cokers who came from NC to SC. Mary Frances Heriot

Hi David
I don't have a John Coker. We were discussing the few John Cokers of late
1700s. The James on the 1850 census of Tuscaloosa AL. you have, was born in
Alabama. ????

There were at least two and maybe three John Cokers in Laurens Co SC in
late 1700's. It is very difficult to separate them, which has been my goal
for years. Here's some of the "sightings":
John, youngest son of Joseph Coker and Mary Aldridge. Mentioned in
Joseph's will of 1792,of which I have a Xerox copy. There is nothing else
to tie him to any of the other "sightings".
A John Coker is the husband of Nancy. I have Xerox of the court
proceedings where Nancy, in 1808, is claiming her right of dower (1/3) on
some land they sold in 1792. She is living in Jackson Co GA at the time
(1808). It states that her husband died Oct 1805. There are other deeds
where Nancy and John Coker are selling land in 1791 in Laurens, so they
were married at least in 1791.
There is a John Coker who is a constable and appears on the record of the
court in Nov 1807 and answered when called. Others with him were John
Nabours, John Atwood, John McDavid and several others. Also at the April
Term in 1809 John Coker was called and answered. John Coker was discharged
from office of constable on April 18, 1809.
In 1810 John Coker appeared in court on a case pertaining to John
Meriwether. No other info to
determine which John Coker this is.
In 1810 we have a Dicey Coker listed on census with 3 younger males. Since
tradition in the Coker families here in San Antonio says that their
ancestors were Dicey and John Coker from Laurens, they we have to assume
that Dicey's husband was deceased by 1810 - their last child being born
ca 1799, a fair assumption would be he died ca 1801.
Is the above Nancy the same as Dicey? Not likely because all thru the
court documents she is listed as Nancy and signs as Nancy. The census is
an official document, so it stands to reason she would have been signed on
as Nancy. Besides Nancy's residence is listed as Jackson Co GA in 1808
when battling over her dower rights.
There is another John listed as "J.P." on some proceedings around 1797
area. He could be the constable mentioned above.
It would make sense to assume that the John married to Nancy was the son of
Joseph & Mary Aldridge Coker. Reasoning might be that they seemed to have
several land holdings in Laurens and being part of that large family made
it easy to acquire some acreage.
But who is the John married to Dicey? Some early researchers (1930's and
back) say that Dicey was another daughter of Joseph and Mary and that she
married a cousin named John Coker. This same researcher claims Joseph
Coker left all his daughters out of his will. An example would be
Jeanette, who married Col. Armstrong. This Jeanette is proven to be a dau
of Joseph by a statement Thomas Coker (a son of Joseph Coker) made in his
RevWar Pension Application.
More later. Any ideas or unmentioned sources will be welcomed to try and
solve the riddle of John.
Hello Dwight,
I am interested in a James Coker listed in the 1850 census of Tuscaloosa ALA
(actually taken 1851) which lists James Coker age 59 born SC. Other
researchers believe this to be the same James Coker listed in the 1880
Shelby Co AL census age 85 also born SC. Do you think this James has any
connection to your John Coker of Laurens Co SC?
Thanks,
David Coker
Hi Bob,
I don't know if there is enough interest on this site for JOHN COKER. As you
know there are a few Johns in this time period. We have did discuss this a
few years back and the discussion are still on this site. Any way we can see
if there is some interest. Here is a John that has some questionable data.
NOTE: John COKER was born about 1765 in Laurens Co., SC. He appeared on the
census in 1800 in Laurens Co., SC. (yes) His wife is listed as Nancy (???).
He appeared on the census in 1810 in Laurens Co., SC. Listed with Dicy
(???). He died on 26 Jul 1847. He was married to Dicey (Nancy/Mary) DIAL?
before 1789 (???).
SPOUSE: Dicey (Nancy/Mary) DIAL? appeared on the census in 1810 in Laurens
Co., SC. She died after 1810 in Cherokee Co., TX. She was born in PA.
Children of JOHN COKER and NANCY DIAL are:
2. i. JAMES2 COKER, b. 1797, South Carolina; d. 1879, Cherokee County,
Texas. M'd: MARY 1819-1849 She was born 1807 in South Carolina and died
1849-1902.
3. ii. JOSEPH COKER, b. August 14, 1798, Laurens County, South Carolina; d.
March 10, 1881, San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX.. He married MALINDA BROWN
abt1820 in South Carolina. She was born November 3, 1806 in South Carolina
and died May 24, 1853 in Jacksonville, Cherokee County, Texas.
This should start some thinking???

Beauton, I appoligize for not responding to your message. my net was disconnected for quite sometime. It is possible we could have a connection to the same Clyde L. Coker. Do you have any Suttons on that side? This Clyde was married to a Mabel Ines Sutton.

I am trying to find Margaret Ann Coker. She was married to Lester Coker. They had three kids: Margaret (Margie) Ann Coker, Dale Lester Coker, & Robert Coker. Margie would about 31 or 32 now. If you know how I can get in touch with them please email me. My family would like to reach them.

Hi this may seem far fetched but i believe our lines are connected to . My ggggrandmother was Athenia Coker daugher of Wesley Coker from Habersham County GA. her siblings were William , Martha, Elizabeth, and Laura. Now Athenia married Agustus Simmons in 1844 my ggggrandfather they have a son named William Seab Simmons which i think is short for seaborn. Also i noticed in your post Gettie my dads sister was Gettie Hayes . My father was George Preston Hayes. I am still trying to make sure but i notice how their names all seem to fit . Let me know what u think thanks Donice Brown
