Tracing My Tree
I started out calmly tracing my tree
To find, if I could, the making of me
And all that I had was Greatgrandfather's name
Not knowing his wife or which way he came.
I chased him across a long line of states
And came up with pages and pages of dates
When all put together it made me forlorn
I'd proved poor Greatgrandpa had never been born.
One day I was sure the truth I had found
Determined to turn this whole thing upside down
I looked up the records of one Uncle John
But then found the old man to be younger than his son.
Then when my hopes were fast growing dim
I came across records that must have been him
The facts I collected then made me quite sad
Dear ol'Greatgrandfather was never a dad.
I think maybe someone is pulling my leg
I'm not at all sure I wasn't hatched from an egg
After hundreds of dollars I've spent on my tree
I can't help wondering if I'm really me?----Anonymous

The Joseph Coker on p95 of the 1830 Franklin Co TN census
is not a direct relative of the Cokers shown on p63. This Joseph was b. about 1799 in Laurens Co SC. Next to him is
his brother James. The older male living with Joseph is another brother named John who arrived in Texas in 1836. John never married. Joseph and James show up in the 1840 Talladega AL census, p18. They and their families came on
to Texas in about 1846. The parents of these three brothers
are by tradition, John and Dicey Coker. This John apparently died before 1810 since Dicey is shown by name in the 1810 Laurens Co census with three younger males.
There were several John Cokers in those years and they are
hard to identify. It is possible that the Cokers on p63 and
95 descend from Joseph Coker and Mary Aldridge. These Cokers were all in the Laurens Co area in the late 1700's.

Hi, my ancestor is Mary Ellen Coker, daughter of Mansel Coker and Sarah Hill of Franklin Co. who married Johnson "Jonce" Hill. In the 1840 census it just shows John Coker as having a male age 20-30,male 15-20, two males at 10-15. Nearby in CD 8 was Mansil and Joseph Coker. In CD 9 lived Armon Coker. The 1830 is also consistent with Mansil and Joseph being John's sons on p63, but there is now another Joseph appearently with Armon living with him on p.95. So how are these Cokers connected with the John Coker founder family group?

Hey, I'm descended from Mary Ellen Coker who married secondly Johnson "Jonce" Hill of Alto, Franklin Co., TN. She is the daughter of Mansel Coker by his first wife Sarah Hill. She is the younger full sister of James Campbell "Cam" Coker. I'm working on getting a photo that has both Cam and Jonce in it. I want to know how you are sure that John is Mansel's father. I know this possibility, but it has seemed puzzling to me. In the RootsWeb mailing list I also found radicallysaved92(a)yahoo.com and RN43byz(a)aol.com who are also descendents of Lem T. Coker.

Jim; I think there is a good chance our Wilson family of Northampton,NC may have a connection to your Coker family.
I am looking for someone to claim James Wilson Coker of Northampton. I would bet his grandfather was a Wilson. When the daus of this Wilson family married, they usually had one child with the given names James Wilson. This despite the fact that the Wilson grandfather bore a different given name.
Much later our Wilsons do marry into the Coker family in IL. Don't know if one has anything to do with the other.
Thanks; Marilyn

John is in my direct line of Northampton Co, N.C. cokers, and I believe him to be the John Jr. referred to in Margaret Coker will 1720. Also John Coker/ Margaret came to America from England and received 150 acres land Nov. 7, 1682 for self, wife Margaret, son William. I have not been able to make a connection to English Cokers as yet even though I have trees back to 1300 in England. John may have come from Ireland or Scotland.
There is no direct connection to John I or John II in Surry Virginia. John I & John II were related. Glad to share info with you. Jim Coker

hi
I dont know this line of coker's but while doing research on cokers of my line i have found two fred coker or fredrick cokers. both are in the northern central region of illinois and ohio. You might try in that region seems that some coker either went to illinoise after ga or went west to kentucky or missouri. it the 1820's land grants were opening up in illinoise territory and looking thru history i have found one fredrick coker that served in the civil war and was a prisoner at the andersonville confederate prison. I cant speculate that this would be the brother to the george you have but may be a way to search another route. this particular fred was from ohio. another is around jacksonville illinois or a county close to it i dont have my notes at the moment so cant give you exact detail on freds i have found. My aunt have them updating their records..
respectfully,

Looking for ancestry of Elizah T. Coker from Fulton county Georgia. Listed in the 1920 census his wife's name was Mary Jose Coker , children we Willie Mae, AnnieBell, Jack,Gladys,George and Fred. My husband's father is George. I have hit a wall trying to find out more info. All of them were born in Georgia and lived in the Atlanta area. Would appreciate any info.
I am looking for information on Capt. Wm Coken/Coker who died in Surry Co VA
leaving probably 4 children and a wife named Elizabeth who remarried to
Nicholas Wilson. Capt. Coker had large landholdings which may have been
affected by his widow's new husband. I also ran across a John Coker who may
be another son or perhaps brother of Capt. Coker.
4th: 1678 Nich. Wilson is shown to be new husband of Elizabeth, relict of
Capt. Wm. Cocken (Coker) a very large landowner. [Nicholas Wilson, was sued
by some of the Coker children. No one is sure who was father of Nicholas
and say he never owned land but the records suggest he married women with
lots of land. They also don't know how he made his money, some thinking it
was from shipping but no sign of that. Again the records suggest to me he
was 'in' at the courthouse and was making money from widows and orphans of
various estates he administered. A number of lawsuits were filed against
him by various heirs.
1683 Nicholas Wilson is sued by his Coker stepdaughter and her husband,
Jno. Dunfield for 1/5th of the estate. The suit continued on after the court
tried to encourage a friendly settlement.
By 1688, Elizabeth is out of the picture and Nicholas has married Margarette
Sampson as mentioned in her father, James Sampson's will in Isle of Wight.
1694
