Cokers in Va and NC early:
In 1678, Nicholas Wilson had filed the estate papers of William Cocker of
Surry, VA whose widow he had married (Davis, Surry Wills, p. 34)
This is from a fellow Wilson researcher. I also have seen other signs of
Wilson & Cokers in the area of SS of VA and NS of NC.
As I come across them again I will post them.....Marilyn

Dwight:
You are right on target. My maternal grandmother from Florida was a Coker, descended from Daniel D. and Daniel J. My paternal grandmother was a Crocker from Illinois. I have very little on the Crockers, except that her father Harvey Crocker is buried in Mt. Pulaski cemetery in Logan County. He fought in the Blackhawk Indian Wars. My Coker kin fought in the various Seminole Indian wars. Not too proud of driving the Indians out of their homes, but seems to be the history of our country. Some of my other kin settling on the coast were responsible for driving other tribes out.

While I am sure that the majority of Crocker's listed in records are just
that; I have found clerks who recorded Crocker when these people were
actually Coker's, so if you find a Crocker in your research I would
recommend researching a little further to determine whether you actually
have a Crocker or a Coker. I do not find it anymore confusing than the other
various spellings such as Cooker, Cocker, Coquer, Cocor, etc. You just much
research far enough to determine the correct family name.

Dwight;
I have just last week informed the COKER list that the CROCKERS and COKERS are two different families and HAVE DONE THROUGH RESEACH AS TO THE family standings, so please don't get new COKER or CROCKER genealogist reseachers confused BY CALLING the CROCKER families
COKERS or the COKER families CROCKERS !!!! Thank you!
I am happily both A CROCKER COUSIN AND COKER COUSIN.
A few intermarriaed with the COKERS as my dad (HORACE N. CROCKER) did with my mother (MAEZELL TARR) whose mother PEARL C. TARR was a DAUGHTER of JOSEPH JAMES COKER of MONTAGUE AND COOKE CO. TX, AND CHOCTAW AL.
For more information concerning the CROCKERs begin on <http://www.geocities.com/texannusa36/thehouseofcrocker.html> , there you will find very informative links to the CROCKER family history as well as links to the CROCKER MAILING LIST ARCHIVES and THE CROCKER COUSINS

Please, look for yourself.
Thank you!

Gary, I'm sorry but I am not aware of any of the southern IL
Cokers who ended up around Springfield, IL area...that is not to say it is
impossible, but my research on the Cokers remains in the beginning stages
with most of my time spent on another branch of the family.

Hi! Charlotte,
Careful about filling in those blanks. That's what got me mixed up with the Coker's. I was only trying to find the death date of Temperance Stevenson/Winningham when I found another mg to Philip Coker in Lauderdale Cty MS in 1844. What was he doing in MS? All his Children seem to have been born in AL. When I found them there I Thought the new child Charles had to have been born there as well but the Census records all show MS so he must have staid in MS a while. It was only because I knew she had a son William Wesley Winningham that led me to check in AR. Thanks for the info from 1900 Census for Charles. I missed it and was checking elsewhere. As you see I have little knowledge of Cokers but am sending what I have accumulated in my Winningham/Stevenson search. John W Coker is listed seperately in 1860, 1870, and 1900 on the Drew Cty Census.
Charles evidently had 3 different wives as you've discovered a 3rd and I already had 2. You might find it less stressful fo the list to contact me at sedlacek(a)nwol.net
Hope something helps.

john coker 1855
most ranges are with in stones throwing distance yet these folks arent related? I know dennis and claybourn are but other I dont know but find it odd the land is in close proximity to each other and all of them bought it in big lots 8000 acres down to 4000 acres some are more but average is the same. only break i see is claybourn and dennis they are in 19 18 sections but william coke was in section 10 later see him in 5 or 6.... find it hard to believe these people arent related.

Gary; Emily Grace Davisson was the dau of William Wisley Davisson and
Elizabeth Coker of McLeansboro, Hamilton Co. IL. Elizabeth Coker was the
dau of Rev Charles Coker & his 2nd wife, Catherine Sonyard. Rev. Charles
Coker was the son of William Coker out of Blount & Maury Co? TN and that is
all I can do from memory. All of my files are packed away while a proper
office is being built.
I do have siblings for Elizabeth but can't get to them. Back before that
Dwight has better information then I do.
Hope that might help a little.

I have been watching this discussion of the Cokers of northern NC/southern
VA from the sidelines because I have little to give except a suspicion of an
earlier Coker/Wilson connection than our proven one in southern IL to Rev
Charles Coker's granddau., Emily Grace Davisson.
However our Wilson / Willson family was in the same area early, in Chowan,
Bertie, Northampton, Halifax, Edgecombe counties. They really did not move
that much, rather the counties were moving out from under their land.
There was a James Wilson Coker in Northampton and a supposed Milner -
Crocker - Willis Wilson marriage there also. The details of this last I
would have to look up.
