Any help with this family is appreciated. John Henry Coker's mother was born
in AL in 1823 or 1824 and is listed on the 1880 MS Census as Pollie. In 1850
& 1860 MS census her name is listed as Mary (M?) Coker living in Tippah
and/or Pontotoc County....parts of these two counties formed Union County in
1870. It appears she lived in the same house for a period of over thirty
years and I have no record of her after 1880. Since she lived next door to
Robert Albert Coker in 1850, she most likely is a close relative (possibly a
daughter in law)...the names Hardy, Ziba,Cynthia, etc indicate a close tie
with the John Ziba Hardee family and/or the Joel Hardee who married an
Isabella Coker in AL in 1835.....this is my mystery...

My GG-grandfather was James Simpson Coker. I have some information that came from John Pace, but I suspect you already have it. The only new information that I can offer is the following:
1900 - A James Coker married M. A. Gray in Simpson Co., MS, 1 Aug. 1900. [Simpson Co., is north of Lawrence and east of Copiah Cos.]
The above information came from the marriage records prepared by the WPA, during the 1930s. The trip from Lincoln Co. to Simpson Co. would have been a short one, and the time interval from Mary Jane's death, in January, to Jame's marriage, in August, would have given a 52-year-old man enough time to court
a widow, or spinster. The 1900 census from Simpson probably will show a James Coker, but I have not checked it yet.
Let me know if you turn up any new information of James S.
William E. Daughdrill

I have information on Fannie Coker of Lincoln,MS. Her father was Y,D. Coker, grandfather was Gallant Coker. I also have a family picture of Y.D's family. Please contact me at PaceJohn(a)msn.com
Our GG-grandfather, James Simpson Coker, disappeared from Copiah County, MS, in 1900, the year in which his wife died.
The only clue that we have to his whereabouts is a cryptic family legend that says that he sent a letter to his daughter Mary Virginia Coker stating that he had come into a large amount of money and would write her with more info later.
He never wrote again (if, indeed, he wrote the first time!).
Does anyone out there have a James Simpson Coker? James' father, Gallant C. Coker, similarly disappeared and was recently discovered to have begun a second family late in life in another part of MS. James may have emulated his father and gone off in his very late middle age and started another family.
At any rate, we'd love to be able to know, at the very least, where James Simpson Coker is buried, so that we can pay our respects to him.
Thanks for any info any other Coker researchers may have! -- Jim Huffman, GG-grandson

I have recently obtained a Bible Record from my Aunt Allie Beonia Coker Dunnam's son (Neil) noting the date of death of John Henry Coker of Union Co, MS (moved to DeWitt, AR in late 1800's) as May 7, 1912. This notation came from Aunt Allie's Bible-in her handwriting. John Henry Coker was her paternal grandfather and is buried in an unmarked grave in Forks LaGrue Cemetery (Arkansas Co, AR) next to his son Ziba Z. Coker. In previous records I have shown John Henry Coker's death as "abt 1907." Please correct this in your records as I am confident in the source.

The Uncle Lee you refer to in your message.....was this Lee Coker. I had an Uncle Lee in Arkansas named Robert Leemon Coker who was born abt 1882.

Tess,
These people lived in the period around 1820-1860 or so and originated in or
about Coosa County in Alabama. The Hardees later (1840's moved to Texas) and
my Cokers moved to Northeast Mississippi.
The named you have are correct for my line, but I am unfamiliar with them.
Can you give me more info.
Jimmy

I just thought of something. There is no way possible Sarah Francis'
brother Arlie could be 94 and still alive. Sarah's son died at 93 a few
years ago. And Arlie was not that far apart in age from Sarah. So maybe
it's Arlie's son. I know Arlie's grandson, Duncan, is alive and active in
geneology.

I am a descendant from John Edward Coker. His marriage certificate says
that he married a Lizzie Vanderpool. Although I have heard he was married
to a Martha Vanderpool so her name might have been Martha Elizabeth and she
used Lizzie on her marriage cert. I am in the process of sending off for
the marriage certificate. They had three children: Arlie, Edward, and
Sarah Francis. I'm not sure about Arlie or Edward, but according to Sarah
Francis Coker's death cert, she was born in Ardmore Oklahoma. I contacted
the OK historical society and was told that the year she was born in
Ardmore, it was still part of the Chickasaw nation. It has been a rumor in
my family that we do have indian blood. However, the closest I've come to
proving it is that Sarah F was born in chickasaw nation territory. My
uncle has a picture of Sarah Francis Coker when she was older, already
grey. When I am able to get the picture and get it scanned, I will post
the picture on a webpage and let y'all know. If Arlie is still alive and
mentally "here", it would be a shame for me not to be able to talk to him
about my great grandmother. She died 2 years before I was born so I never
got to know her. I would like to know what she was like. I have a copy of
Sarah Francis Coker's death cert if you need any information off that let
me know. Sarah Francis Coker (aka Fannie) is buried along side her husband
in Medina Texas at a cemetery called Oak Rest. Who is Shannon? Jera,
please contact me (entity(a)ktc.com) and let me know if we are related.
Thanks!

Chickasaw Indian blood. She didnt say how. Also, I would like to know if we
are kin to the ones on the board that claim to be descended from Vashti and
Dempsey Coker. they say their ancestors are John E a and Sarah A. Coker.
Another puzzle is, What was allie's mother's maiden name? Who was Allie's
real father? She is the one who looks Indian to me in the picture. Kindest

Beth, Do you have a Rossana Coker b. 1826, in your line? She married Leonidas F. Gilbert around 1850. Texas 1860 census list family in Angelina Co., TX and that they are all found AL. Gilbert family members think they came from around Choctaw, AL? No one has found them in AL? Thanks, Brenda DRY2CRY(a)AOL.COM
Bobby,
Do you have a Dicey Coker listed as a daughter of Leonard?
She would have been born about 1834 and married John L.
Goats in Pope co. Arkansas. I am at a dead end. Someone told me that she was perhaps the daughter of Leonard. I need help!! I have no documentation on her and need some leads. Thanks!
Correction: To my last post, Thomas A. Coker was born about 1826, the name Asbury is not confirmed.
The dates for Thomas A. Coker's birth and death were taken from transcribed cemetery records which are either in error or the wrong T. A. Coker, although it appears that his second wife Sarah Sharp is also buried there and possibly Orpha, the wife of John, but her dates appear incorrect also and his daughter Frances Wardlaw is also buried there.
