In H. Grady Howells For Dixie Land, Ill Take My Stand, the best-ever
index to MS
Confederate Patriots (3 volumes, 3600 pages, 149,000 names, & published in
1999 &
2000), I find:
(1) William G. Coker, private, Co. C, 5th Battalion, MS Infantry
(2) W.G. Coker, private, Co. A, 41st MS Infantry
Sometimes, soldiers near the border with another state crossed over and
joined companies being formed in that neighboring state. My grandfather,
Gallant C. Coker (ancestry unknown) crossed over from Wayne County, MS, to
serve in the 36th AL Infantry.
See Mississippi History link below for information on county of formation
for individual
companies.
Information on individual soldiers is found in each soldiers Compiled
Service Record
(CSR). Additionally, if a soldier served in more than one unit, he would
have a CSR for
each unit. I would suggest that you order this soldiers/these soldiers
CSR(s) from the
MS Dept. of Archives & History (faster and about the same price as ordering
through the
National Archives; slower but much cheaper than ordering through Broadfoot).
The
MDAH is on-line at http://www.mdah.state.ms.us/
Confederate Pension Applications for Southern Patriots living in MS at the
time of their
filing for same are also available from the MDAH. Betty Wiltshire has a
fine,
three-volume index to these MS applications, but it is not available for use
on-line.
However, Ms. Wiltshire imforms me that it is available for purchase on-line
at
www.pioneersoutheast.com, along with many other books authored by her and
others.
The Pension Applications sell for $25 each book, Vol. A-G, H-O, and P-Z.
"Mississippi Confederate Grave Registrations," which I think is also by the
renowned Ms.
Betty Wiltshire (but I'm not sure) lists most registered Confederate
burials after about
1905 in the state and might include a listing your ancestor(s). Note that
the book is only
an index and that you would then have to either consult or ask the MDAH to
consult the
original Confederate Graves Registrations to provide you with specific info
regarding the
actual burial site of the deceased (location of cemetery, etc.).The MDAH is
on-line at
http://www.mdah.state.ms.us/ Please note that the original Confederate
Grave
Registration forms contain only scant information, mainly describing the
location of the
cemetery in which the veteran was buried.
Information about nearly every MS Confederate unit may be found at the MS
Division,
Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV), history page at
http://www.mississippiscv.org/mississippi_history.htm.
(www.mississippiscv.org is the
homepage address.) These capsule histories also contain information on
counties of
formation for each company (where known). If you like these histories,
contact our
superb webmaster, Henry Irving, and let him know that you appreciate all his
hard
volunteer efforts!
The Civil War Units Researchers page at
http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/unit4.html
contains links to researchers willing to share information about various
Confederate units,
from Mississippi as well as other Confederate States. Check this and
associated pages out
if youre interested in a particular Confederate regiment. If you have a
lot of info to share
about a particular regiment, contact the webmaster and offer yourself as a
point of contact
for others interested in the same unit! Share the honor of having
Confederate ancestors!
The Official Records of the War of the Rebellion (i.e., the War of Northern
Aggression)
remain the single most important source for primary information on Civil War
units,
personalities, and actions. Andy Ramsay noted on the Mississippi WWW Civil
War Board
(www.ebicom.net/~moorer/scripts/wwwboard/) that the OR has been digitized by
Cornell
University and is online and searchable at
http://www.cdl.library.cornell.edu/moa/moa/_browse.html. The lins for both
the Army and
Navy OR are about halfway down this page. You can search for any term or
phrase.
When read online, it is read as images (pictures) of the original
publication.
To see a listing of Mississippi Confederate flags in the possession of the
MS Dept. of
Archives & History in Jackson, go to www.mississippiscv.org, click on
Mississippi
History, go to the bottom of the page, and click on the MDAH flag link.
Additionally,
the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia (www.moc.org), has the
following
MS Confederate flags in its collection: Stanfords Battery (MS Light
Artillery), 7th MS
Infantry, 11th MS Infantry, 16th MS Infantry, 19th MS Infantry, 24th MS
Infantry, 29th
MS Infantry, 34th MS Infantry, 41st MS Infantry, and one unidentified MS
Infantry flag
that belonged to a regiment in Gen. Sears Brigade and was captured at
Richland Creek
after the Battle of Nashville.
Gentlemen: Please considering joining the SCV. Information about
membership in the
SCV may be found on our national website at www.scv.org. Prospective
members may
also call 1-800-MYSOUTH.
Ladies: Please encourage your female relations to join the United Daughters
of the
Confederacy (UDC). Information about the UDC may be found at www.hqudc.org.
If you have any photos of your ancestor(s) or other MS Confederates in
uniform, please
contact H. Grady Howell, Jr., 103 Trace Harbor Road, Madison, MS 39110, and
send him
a copy of your picture(s). Grady is collecting MS Confederate portraits for
a second
volume of MS Patriots in uniform. Be sure to send him a copy of your MS
Confederate(s)
in order to insure the survival of these precious images! Many libraries
and archives
purchase Gradys books, so your ancestors photo will, in this manner, be
transmitted unto
future generations of descendants! Also, you will be thanked by many other
descendants
or researchers who may not know you and may not know you have such pictures!
Gradys first volume of Confederate Patriot portraits was phenomenal! It is
a real treat to
see a book of nothing but proud Mississippians ready to sacrifice their all
to repel the
foreign invasion of their homeland!
Please send Grady a short note along with your picture(s), telling him what
you know
about the soldier(s), their full names (if known), their units, wounds,
etc., so that he can
provide a suitable caption in the book.
Grady also welcomes portraits of unidentified MS Confederates in uniform.
Again,
include as much info as possible about these unknowns when you write him.
(Info such as
where you acquired the photo, whom it might possibly be, etc.,)
On the off chance that you had ancestors in the 43rd MS Infantry, please see
our small
website at www.43rdmississippi.homestead.com/index.html then contact me.
Thanks!
I hope all of the above information has been of both use and interest to
you! -- Jim H.

<< My great-grandfather was named William Green Coker. Family history
indicates he was a Confederate veteran who was born in Alabama (possibly
Bibb County) around either 1837 or 1845. He is buried near Seale, TX which
is on the Limestone County / Robertson County line. ...This is about all I
know of him, but was wondering if the GREEN middle name might have a
connection to your GREEN Coker, who was Warren W. Coker's brother.
I have a Green COKER (dob abt 1832 in Ala.) in the 1850 Union City, Ark.
census. I do not know for sure if he is MY Green Coker, but I am gathering
all documentation I can find on Green COKER's. He is living with a Harriet
STEVENS (dob abt 1814 in S. Carolina).

Debbie,
My Coker are from Society Hill, SC. I have never seen Thomas Hamilton Coker
in Society Hill. There were a string of Thomas Holloway Cokers in that area.

SO, WHAT IS A MELUNGEON ANYWAY? By Bill Fields
See http://www.bright.net/~kat/melung.htm
"We should probably begin with a general overview of who the Melungeons are.
Melungeons are a group of dark-featured people who have lived in Appalachia
for
at least 200 years and probably longer. They are not, at least exclusively,
Native Americans, not African American and not the "usual" Caucasian (read:
Scott Irish/German) Appalachians. They were reported to have been here when
the
first "white" settlers came and were living in cabins, speaking broken
Elizabethan English and saying they were "Portyghee". Right now, the term
Melungeon seems to be most strongly associated with the area around Hancock
Co.
Tennessee but there are Melungeons and their descendants all over the
region,
east Tennessee, southeastern Kentucky, western Virginia and western North
Carolina. While their darker, rather Mediterranean features once set them
apart,
inter--marriages have taken place over the years and the "look" is probably
not
as apparent in many families.
Melungeons have over time gotten a lot of media attention but it has not
always
been good or useful. The media it seems has always liked to tell things the
way
they want and Melungeons often come off as a folk tale --- another
Appalachian
mystery --- but they are a real people, just one with a lost history. There
are
lots of theories as to where the Melungeons came from. One is that they
descend
from the Lost Colony of Roanoke who intermarried with local Native American
populations. Another says they are the descendants of the Welsh explorer,
Madoc
who came to North America around 1100 with ten ships filled with colonists.
Some
believe that they were the descendants of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors.
Still
others suggest that Melungeons are the lost tribe of Israel, lost Spanish
explorers, or simply "tri-racial isolates", meaning a Native American/
African
American/ Caucasian mixture which continued intermarrying.
Personally, I lean very heavily to the theory put forth by Dr. N. Brent
Kennedy
in his book, "The Melungeons, the Resurrection of a Proud People, A Story of
Ethnic Cleansing in America" (Mercer University Press 1994). Dr. Kennedy
suggests that the Melungeons were stating fact when they said they were
"Portyghee". He suggests that Portuguese/Moorish people who were being
increasingly attacked during the Spanish Inquisition were a large part of
the
settlers Spain brought to North America in the 1500s. He has good evidence
that
these people were, in various ways, abandoned or fled the settlements and
that
they then intermarried with the local Native Americans. These people then
migrated westward in front of the larger settlements and, on the way may
have
continued to intermarry with other groups including possibly escaped slaves,
and
English or English/Native American mixed people...."
Possible Melungeon Surnames
The following are the Melungeon-related surnames (NC, VA, TN, KY) from Brent
Kennedy's book, "The Melungeons, the Resurrection of a Proud People, A Story
of
ethnic Cleansing in America" (Mercer University Press).
A word of caution with surnames though, having one of the following does not
necessarily mean that an ancestor was Melungeon, just like not having one
does
not mean that he or she was not.
Adams, Adkins, Barker, Barns, Beckler,
Bell, Bennett, Berry, Biggs, Bolen/Bowlin/Bowling, Bowman, Branham, Brogan,
Bullion, Burton, Byrd,

Co., SC. Her father was Robert B. COKER, Jr. b. before 1776 m. Elizabeth
HENDERSON bc 1784. Sure is mighty close to not mean something! What do you
think?

Hi,
Can someone tell me if Tirzah Coker married into this Hammons family and
who
were her Coker ancestors? Could she be the white woman that was listed in
the
1800 NC census with the Hammons and what was their nationality?
Joy in GA
In the"Black Experience in Revolutionary North Carolina" p. 66, Hammons
listed
as being "Mulattoes or Mustees having no African blood in them" The Hammon
family in VA in 1800 were listed as very light skinned and born free.
Ann Hammond b. ca 1720, had child when she was in service to MARY WILSON,
widow of Chowan County in July 1737. (Chowan minutes 1735-48, p. 73.)
Mary Hammond, born perhaps 1755, was living in Edgecombe Co., NC in 1779
when
the 25 May session of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions ordered her
"base
begotten child, "Jordan Hammons, bound to Willis Hyatt. She may have been
related to Drummond Hammond, no race stated, who was 24 years old when his
two
year apprenticeship agreement with Alexander Brodie was proved in the 15
March
1758 Edgecombe County Court.
Mary's children were:
1. Jordan, born perhaps 1767, no age stated when the court ordered
him
bound. He was head of an Edgecombe County household of 4 "other free" in
1790
(NC:57), 4 in Chatham County in 1800, and 6 "free colored" in Chatham in
1820
(NC:211).
2. ?Frederick, b. ca 1778, "Mullato" ordered bound to Dempsey Odam
by
the Edgecombe County Court on 24 July 1787, no parent named. He was removed
from Odam's care and ordered bound to JAMES COKER by the May 1793 Edgecombe
Court. He married Nancy Pettiford, 19 May 1802 Granville County bond with
George Anderson bondsman.
Shadrack Hammond, born perhaps 1757, was "a free Mulatto boy" ordered bound
to
WILLIAM SPEIR by the November 1760 Edgecombe Co., Court. He was head of an
Edgecombe Co. household of 8 "other free" in 1790 (NC:57), 9 "other free"
and
1 white woman in 1800 (NC:209), 8 "other free" in 1810 (NC:748) and 6 "free
colored" in 1820 (NC:126).
Shadrack Hammond had son named James Hammons.
Info I have says that Tirzah Coker m. James Hammons. Also deed book 16-32,
bill of sale, May 22, 1817 lists Tirzah Coker & James Hammons. Who is
Tirzah?

Linda,
Some of the sales I have list the first names of the slaves, I'll dig them
out
if you want.
There was a Newton Coker, mulatto, living in GA, who at one time had 2
mulatto
children living with him but in his pension application for the Indian Wars,
he states that he had no children even though he was married three times.
He
enlisted in AL to fight in FL and was later injured in the construction of
Fort Henderson. The papers stated that he fought but was not put on the
roster because of his race. He also says that he lived in SC, NC, AL, & GA
and that his mother was a white woman and his father was a black man. I
have
pension papers if they would be any help to you.
Newton was born Aug 14, 1817 in Laurens Co., SC. He enlisted on July 10,
1836
in Lafayette, AL. In 1860 Towns Co., GA he had Saythy, William, and John
all
listed as mulatto living with him. Some genealogists say William and John
were his sons, and that William was known as Ben. I don't know.
According to his pension papers, his wives were Lucinda Headnett, Rachel
Guy,
and Margaret Jones.
I'll send you the slave names I have as soon as I can get them together.
Joy
