I just realized that I put Hannah's son as her husband!!!
The message should have said:
"I am looking for the parents of Hannah Coker, b. 1805 Alabama. Her marriage
license to Harris P. Speir, lists her father(?) as Philip Coker."
Gee, I must have been on another planet. Sorry.

The marriage of Hannah Coker and Harris P. Speir did take place on 5 Jul

The Harris Speir married in GA to Ann Shaw is Harris P. Speir's uncle.

In reading posts to this site, it seems there are 2 primary Coker lines
in Alabama. Does any one have information on a Mary Ola Coker, born around
1898-1901 in Alabama, probably in Jefferson or Shelby counties. Does this
name ring a bell at all with any of you? She was married to a Philip Gay
and died in 1933 after the birth of her fifth child. I found a Mary and
Philip Gay in the 1920 census for Shelby County, but I'm not sure if it's
the same person, although the ages were about right. Any and all help appreciated.
In reading many of the postings on this site, it seems that there are a
couple of primary COKER lines in Alabama. Does anyone out there have any
information on a Mary Ola Coker, born around 1899-1901 in Alabama? Perhaps
Jefferson, Bibb or Shelby counties. Mary Ola married Philip GAY and was
living in Jefferson County in 1933. I have no information on her siblings
or her parents. Any help is appreciated.
Dear Joy: I would also appreciate Marcell Coker White's email address if
you have it, or how to find the posting to which it refers, as I missed it
somehow. Thanks, Joe Coker

Are you kidding? NO ONE has been able to find something you haven't
found! Really, you have been so generous in sharing yoru research, maybe
it just seems as if you've done all the finding.
I think we agree that there was something going on between our
lines. There are just too many instances of their intertwining, for them
not to be fairly close--if not very close--kin.
I cannot for the life of me find Marcell Coker White's e-mail
address. I really want to contact her because, in re-reading what she
sent me re NEWELL's being the son of JACOB, she mentioned that she had
checked out all the children of ISAAC, ABRAHAM and (get this!) MALACHI,
and not found Newell and Charlton among them, thus leading to her
conclusion that they had to be the sons of JACOB. She's the first I've
heard of who claims to know the children of Malachi. What about you?
You mentioned in a recent post that you know who the MARY COKER is
that Charlton paid the taxes for. I know you know who her son is!
But do you know her father, brother, etc.?
Found any reason for Charlton's paying her taxes yet?
Who was the JOSEPH who also paid her taxes?
Charlton's son, John S. H. married DELILAH ELIZABETH BRIDGES, dau.
of WILSON BRIDGES. If your MARY COKER is the one who married WILSON
BRIDGES, there's yet one more connection.
Seems if DAVID JACKSON COKER, stepson of Wilson Bridges, was the son
of MARY COKER (Bridges), Mary would have been the widow of a Coker man.
--thus the Coker men were paying the taxes for the widow of a relative???
.......................
Thank you (yet again) for the info re the Poor School Fund. I'm not
exactly sure what this was. Does the fund listing mean that the boys'
education was being paid for by the county?
............................
I also have questions about SPEAR COKER. Was re-reading some of your
many posts to the mailing list, and saw you trying to figure him out.
You wrote: "There was a Charlton Coker b. 1788 SC in north Ga that

named Robert A. Coker b.June 1821 GA who married a Lida ?. They had 2
daughters, Mary & Matilda who's ages were transposed on 2 census records.
I think that Mary b. 1866 on the 1880 census is the right one, that
would have made her 20 when Spear Coker was born."
Are you saying Robert's daughter, Mary M. Coker, was the mother of
Emory Spear Coker? Was she unmarried?
(I have Robert's wife's name was MARY LIDA E. HOUSE.)
Sorry I don't know anything about Spear Coker--or I'd share.

Some day we'll get this all figured out: then we'll have to spend our

For those of you who haven't visited or have never been to my web site I just
wanted to give an update. I have added several new reports. My surname list
now consists of: BASHAM, BRECHIN, BROWN, COKER, HALL, HILL, MEADOR, RHUDY,
ROACH, WEST and WHITMORE. The only one I am still working on is for the
VOIVEDICH surname.
My webpage address is: http://www.geocities.com/rema3333/home.html

Suzanne,
I thought you had been able to find something I hadn't. There is a lot of
educated guessing going on in GA right now due to the unavailability of all
the Franklin Co., GA records.
Found this at the Archives in Atlanta...
Poor School Fund 1840-1848 370th district Franklin Co., GA
David J. Coker 13 (b. ca 1835)
John S. H. Coker 11 (b. Dec 6, 1833)
Sarah C. Coker 9
Permelier I. Coker 12
Sarah E. Coker 8
(But no Newell Coker listed?)
All I have is my handwritten copy because it was in the room with the old
books where they guard you. The books are in such bad shape, they won't let
you turn them over on a copier.
So David Jackson Coker and Charlton's son John S. H. probably went to school
together, plus living next to each other. And in David Jackson's pension
papers, John S. H. signed saying he had known him over 17 yrs.
In 1856, Charlton was living in the Hollingsworth Dist. of Habersham County
and that is where David Jackson Coker & Amanda Thacker m. Jan 17, 1856. Also
Spear Coker m. Lucy Smallwood and hand written on the side of the license in
the court house in Habersham Co. is written "not 17 yrs old". Some
descendants of Emory Spear Coker, who do not know very much about Spear's
history, have told me that he was married to a 'Little' the first time, they
thought..wonder if it could have been 'Small' wood instead? By 1860, the
Hollingsworth Dist. had been incorporated into Banks Co., GA.
When you check Banks Co., GA census, you will notice that the only large land
holder around them was Asa Griffin. An educated guess?...would be that they
possibly all worked for him. There was also a James H. Coker living as a
laborer with one of Griffin's sons.
I'm trying to get all my info together to put on a web site (with my son's
help) because it would just be easier that way, I think.

If you will send me your address by E-Mail I'll send you a copy of the land
transfers showing Philip Coker's land. I believe Philip was a son of
Whitley,SR.
Whitley,SR. loaned money to Sugars Coker, sold land to John Coker, Henry
Coker etc., etc, etc. Whitley was on the tax list in 1780 in Northampton, N.
C.
along with his Benjamin before coming to South Carolina about 1793. There
were other Cokers there, in Northampton, county if you need to know.

Please tell us the adjoining landholders and the county in which the land was
located. It may be "district" at that time in SC history. Elizabeth Jones

Joy and Joe,
I have no PROOF! Here's my thinking on Charlton Coker's being
the son of JACOB and Elizabeth (?).
Charlton, my husband's ancestor, was totally unconnected until I
received info from two helpful people--Joy (yes, you!) and Marcelle Coker
White. Marcelle, a descendant of Isaac, wrote:
"I have proven all the children of Abraham, Malachi, and Isaac. [3
of the 4 sons of Joseph and Milly/Milsey] Jacob had several children and
I believe two of them to be Charlton Coker and Newell/Euell Coker.
Newell lived close to Jacob, and he names his first son Jacob. Some of
Charlton Coker's family lived near Newell's family after they moved to
Union and Towns Counties, in GA. They are also found together in Clay
County, NC."
"John S. H. Coker (son of Charlton) moved around the same area that
(Towns, Union, GA & Cherokee Co., NC) that Ruben Mitchell Coker (son of
Newell) did. reuben Mitchell is buried in Towns County."
Also, this from Dwight Stipes, Nov., 1998:
"I have a list of Abraham and Isaac's children taken from their
wills and Newell wasn't listed in either. I could not find Malachi's or
Jacob's children listed anywhere. Since Newell named his first born
Jacob, I believe he [Jacob] was Newell's father."
So it appears to me that no one ( know of) nor I has been successful
in finding proof of the names of the children of Jacob Coker. Through
proccess of elimination, it seems Newell was probably Jacob's child.
Charlton can be eliminated as a child of Jacob's brothers, Isaac,
Abraham, and Malachi. So, to whom does Charlton belong if not to Jacob?
I think the fact that Charlton's and Newell's children (Charlton's
first cousins) are often found in close proximity also adds weight to
Charlton's, as well as Newell's, being a son of Jacob.
Believe me, I welcome anyone's better idea--not to mention REAL proof!
On to MARY COKER: Who the heck is she?
Joy generously sent me this info showing Charlton and Joseph both
paying taxes for a Mary Coker:
1823 Franklin Co., GA CHARLTON paid poll tax, about 31 years old
1827 Franklin Co., GA CHARLTON in land lottery, Watter's District
1827, July 29 Franklin Co., GA Charlton marries Matilda Chandler, b.
ca 1805, SC.
1830 Franklin Co., GA Census: CARLTON [sic] at #244
1835 Franklin Co., GA Joseph COKER paid tax for a MARY COKER
1836 Franklin Co., GA CHARLTON paid tax for MARY COKER, possibly the
Mary who later married Wilson Bridges
1836 Franklin Co., GA Land Grant--NEWELL Coker-400 acres
1837 Franklin Co., GA Joseph Coker paid tax for MARY COKER
1838 Franklin Co., GA CHARLTON paid tax in Capt. Bryan's Dist, also
paid tax
for MARY COKER # Thank you again, Joy!
Questions:
*Who is this Joseph Coker?
*Is this the same Joseph Coker who married Cloe Bridges?
*What is the relation of Joseph and Charlton? Any blood kin?
*What is this Mary Coker's relation to Joseph and Charlton?
A Mary Coker married Wilson Bridges December 23, 1841, Franklin Co.,
GA.
Charlton Coker's son, John S. H. Coker, married Delilah Elizabeth
Bridges (dau. of Wilson Bridges and his first wife) January 22, 1854,
Franklin Co., GA.
Also, look at more info from Joy, with my notes added. Notice that
Charlton's sons and Mary Coker's son are living near each other.
1858 Banks Co., GA was formed. Hollingsworth Dist of Habersham Co. and
CHARLTON now in Banks Co., GA
1860 Banks Co., Census: --in different dwellings--
#238 CHARLTON Coker and wife, Emily (widow Porter) at Hollingsworth P.O.
Also in household--
Marion [Matilda Chandler Coker's child]
Mary E. [Matilda Chandler Coker's child]
Matilda E. b. abt. 1857 [Matilda Chandler Coker's child]
Hezekiah H. Porter b. abt. 1852
Gabriel N. Porter, b. abt. 1856
[Last two the children of Emily and her first husband, Mr.
Porter.]
#238 GEORGE W. Coker and Rachel, Josephine, Charlton A.--Charlton's son
and his family
#252 David J(ackson) Coker (believed to be the son of Mary Coker, whose
taxes pd. by Charlton ? )--
#252 ELIZABETH COKER and MARY COKER
#252 James H. Coker-- a farmhand enumerated with Thomas B. Griffin
#252 JOHN S.(H.) Coker with Delilah E.(Elizabeth)(nee Bridges) and
WILLIAM MARION COKER [John S. H. Coker and William Marion
Coker were the son and grandson of Charlton Coker.]
#274 Robert A. Coker and Mary L. E. (Lathia?)--Charlton's son and his
wife #
All this is very confusing to me. I once had my questions sort of
straight in my mind, but I haven't looked at this is quite a while.
Joe, here's my original e-mail:
Hi,
I've gotten a little confused about who this Jacob who was married
in 1845 is. Would someone be so kind as to tell me if and how he is
related to JOSEPH COKER (d. bef. May 1775, m. to Milsy)?
But, I am very interested in sharing info with anyone who is
working on another JACOB COKER. Joseph's (above) son. This Jacob
(1765-1840), wife Elizabeth. Offsrping were CHARLTON (mine), NEWELL,
ALSEA, and SINTHA.
Trying to solve the mystery of who the MARY COKER was that Charlton
paid taxes for in Franklin Co., GA, in the 1830's.

Suzanne,
You stated that Charlton, Newell, Alsea & Sintha were all children of a Jacob
Coker. Could you please tell me where you found proof of this? I am a
descendant of the Mary Coker that Charlton and Joseph Coker paid taxes for
until she marrried.
Thank you,
Joy in GA
