I am researching my ggrandfather, John Coker. I know he was born in Alabama
in 1847. I have researched a lot in Alabama records but can't find out
where John came from nor who his parents were. Is it possible that my ggrandfather
John Coker is John/Jonathon Coker and Alice Brown's son and brother of
your ggrandfather, Thomas Jefferson Coker. It would explain a lot about
why I am having so much trouble finding out about his parents. Since your
Thomas Jefferson Coker was born in 1841, I thought perhaps they were brothers.
My John Coker also named one of his sons, Thomas.
Only that James E. Coker married Anna Emery and moved to Oklahoma Indian
Territory where 2 of their children were born. Their first 2 were born in
Texas.

I am also researching Cokers. Mine are in GA. My gggrandfather was Reuben
(or Ruben) Mitchell Coker (known as Mitch). He was born in 1836 (location
unknown) and died in Young Harris, GA in 1900. Reportedly, he had two
brothers and a sister: James, who lived in Jellico, TN; Henry, who "went
West", and unnamed sister, who lived in Dalton, GA. Ruben's children were:
William Alexander (called Alex) born 1863, Joe, Jim, Duffy, Felix, Mary, and
Robert N. (called Little Will) born 1872. The names are similar to yours and
the dates seem to dovetail, so maybe there is a connection here. Do you have
any other information on your Cokers?

This information has been taken from the 1870, 1880, and 1900 census. In
going through the archives, I feel like there should be a connection to some
of the Alabama, South Carolina, or Georgia COKERS but proof keeps eluding me.
Can anyone help?

No, I don't. The census only says Louisiana. I was checking the 1870
Louisiana census but ran out of time yesterday as the National Archives here
in KC closed at 4pm. If I get back there tomorrow, and get lucky, I may find
out which parish he was living in in 1870.

Do you know where in Louisiana? My Charley COKER was born in Ala. in abt 1840
then moved to LA. sometime before 1877. Where all of his children were born.
Thanks to the 1900 Census, I've found that my James E. Coker was born in
Louisiana, not Texas - which is what my wife's family history says.
Does anyone have any information on a James Coker, b. April, 1860 in
Louisiana? We haven't found his parents yet but according to the census, his
parents were both born in Georgia.
James married an Anna Emery, b. 1868 in Texas, around 1885. They moved into
the Okla. Indian Territory sometime before the 1900 census was taken. both
of Anna's parents were born in Missouri.
I've noticed a lot of discussion re: Cokers in Louisiana but thought that
they didn't apply to my Cokers until now.
Any help is appreciated.

Isabella Coker is the daughter of George Coker not Thomas and Epsie , thus
this far , Thomas ( Thompson Hamilton Coker ) Coker's father Nathan ( Nathaniel
Coker ) could of had a son George , would have been 1st born , or it was
Nathan's younger brother , making George Coker , Thomas Coker's uncle and
Isabella Coker, Thomas's niece . George Coker gave his consent of marriage
for Esabella to wed a Joel Hardy or Hardee on 6/1/1835. I still do not
know for shure as of now. Thomas also has a son named George Coker , but
would be to young to be Isabella Coker's father . I have found that a George
Coker living with Thomas and Epsie Coker and that he was older than Thomas/
. still researching this family , I will post updates , for the most part
I'm on the right track. I now have siblings to all of Thomas and Epsie
Cokers 8 children and know to be all correct. E-mail if searching , or
if you have any information that may help my research . I thank U.
Hi Debbie
I know that L.B. Quiet is researching Isabella Coker. His e-mail is
lbquiett(a)nefon.net.
If I am not mistaken I think he has a copy of her death certificate. Of
course there is always the chance of it being a different Isabella.
We have a Monday night chat group, a bunch of us get together on this chat
and try to sort all these Cokers out to the right family.
I have not way of knowing where your group are from, but mine started out in
S.Carolina came thru Georgia and on to Madison County in Florida.
My great grandfather was Jonathan Coker born 2-16-1826 in Telfair Co. Ga.
You are welcome to join our chat group or we will just share what information
we have with you, but need to know a little more about dates and locations.
Try Lewis Quiett and see if it is the same Isabella, also you did not say
where Isabella got married but if in the state of Georgia I will try to get
you the correct names and date if you will let me know what county. I live
in Georgia and have a good library.
Let us hear from you

The 1860 census shows a Robert J. Lane, age 18, living in the home of John
and Louise Coker in Edgecomb County, NC.
Robert Lane was born 29 may 1842, served in the Civil War, and married
Elizabeth Marks in 1866.
I would very much like to know the connection between Robert Lane and the
Cokers.
Look at Louise age..she very well could be his sister..

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION:
What's the difference between the Coker-L and Coker-D list modes?
RESPONSE:
-L means List mode.
-D means Digest mode.
In List mode (-L) you get each message that is sent to the list as soon as
it is received by the list server. So, in List mode you get each
individual email message. In List mode the messages include the automatic
Forum taglines but do not include the Digest header. In List mode you get
more email more often, and they are typically much smaller in size than the
Digests.
In Digest mode (-D) you receive a compilation of messages sent in one
email. Digests are sent either when a pre-determined amount of time has
passed since the last Digest was mailed (e.g. 72 hours), or when a pre-set
Digest email size threshold has been reached (e.g. 32k). The Digests
include an automatic Digest header but do not include the automatic Forum
taglines. In Digest mode you get fewer email messages less often, and they
are usually larger in size than the List mode messages.
See the following for further information regarding mail mode and mailing
list options.

Jackie,
I am a descendant of Nancy A. Coker, one of Garlington Coker and Martha Babb's
15 children. Regarding Kellett Coker, in "Our Coker Kin" (Vol I) by Barekman,
Kellett was b.- March 24,1828, d.-April, 1856 and "this young man died while
building his father's coffin, struck by lightning". This is from a family Bible.
Garlington (called Christopher Garlington by some researchers) died April 6,
1856. He was in Fayette County, GA in 1847 when Nancy married my gr.-grandfather
James L. Thomas. They named their only son James Kellett Thomas (I am James
Kellett, III) for Kellett Coker, or Martha's mother Martha Kellett, or both.
Garlington and family were in Carroll Co., GA in 1850. In 1860, Martha and a
few children were in Edwardsville, AL. I know of no records that say whether
Garlington and Kellett, when they died in 1856 were still in GA or had already
moved to AL.
There is a ton of information about the Cokers, Babbs and Kelletts on
GenForum. The Coker site is:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/coker/
If you are not familiar with this site, look at the upper left of the page and
in the space for "Search this Forum", type in Garlington-
a list of all correspondence which contain his name will appear. Also from
there, in the upper right of the page, you can visit quickly the Babb or Kellett
sites by typing in Babb or Kellett in the "Jump to Forum" space.
Regards- J.K.T.
