RE: South Carolina Baptist Historical Collection
You will find an index to the minutes of 517 SC Baptist churches that
have been preserved on microfilm and available for inter-library loan
at:
<http://library.furman.edu/depts/speccoll.htm>
I was told by the staff, "the day they receive the request for a film
from your local library, is the day the film is mailed out." Unless your
library is slow, you shouldnt have to wait very long for the film. I
have waited as long as two months for a film from the Mormon FHC.
By the way, if you ever get the opportunity to visit this campus and
library, you are in for a treat. The staff bends over backwards to help
you find what you are looking for, and presents suggestions for further
references and research. The campus itself is incredibly beautiful.
1860 US census for Talladega County AL, page 631, family 942.
There is a Johnathan Coker age 64, Physician, b SC with his wife Martha,
age 50 b SC; Jasper 19 male b AL, also in household is Mary Luke age 34,
b SC.
Next door, family 943 is Marion Coker age 30, also a Physician b GA with
spouse James* age 24 b NC and son Fletcher age 1 b AL.
*I know, but I found this family on the 1870 census for Clay Co. AL,
page 214 family 310, and she looks like a James there also. Probably
Jane. In the 1870 Clay Co. the family is in the household of a Monroe
family, and the children are William 11, b AL, Wesley 9 b AL, Laura 6 b
AL and 1 yr old Martha, b AL.
The 1850 AL census Index has Johnathan on page 053 in Tallapoosa Co.

This is as far back as I have on my Cokers. I have info on some of the
children. Am willing to trade. What I have came from family bible,
which was copied by a cousin years ago. Would like to fill in the rest
of the family.
Thanks,

I don't know if I can assist you with much, as I am new to the geneology
search for the Cokers. There is a Coker, Alabama, which is in Tuscaloosa
County. This is west of Buhl. I was formerly a Deputy Sheriff in Tuscaloosa
County, and unfortuneately, never took the time to investigate roots in that
area. (All I did was mail my Christmas cards from the Coker post office, to
get the post mark!). Oh well, regrets from the past. I live now in
Birmingham, AL. Good luck! If I can find any information, I will post
it.James A. Coker

I am still searching for information on the parentage of Simeon Miles COKER, b. 2/5/1824 somewhere in Georgia and d. 5/15/1898 in Texas. His first wife was Sarah H. TURRENTINE, b. 1822 in GA and d. 5/5/1861 in Louisiana or TX. His second wife was Sarah Embery, birth date unknown. At some point, they moved from Georgia to Louisiana and then to Texas. If anyone has any info on this line, I would appreciate it if you would let me know.

Terry - I have the Dawes Rolls of 1898 listing those who were enumerated
up to 1902. If you have Julia's maiden name, I would be glad to see if
her family is registered.

Would happen to have a Sarah L. Gulledge Coker? She was adopted by the
Gulledge's so I don't really know what her name might be. Her son was
named James Albert Coker in case he might have registered.

I didn't know there was another Coker with that given name in the same
area. There was an Andrew Jackson Coker b. 1833 AL who came to Cherokee Co
with his parents, James and Mary (?) Coker about 1847. He served in the CW
as a doctor and had four wives - none by the name you mention. He had a
total of about 10 children, but none were named Andrew Jackson Coker.
Just sending this to keep others from making a mistake when tracking down
their Cokers in E. Texas.

Haven't posted in a while. Still looking for any information on the Coker
line of east Tennessee per the following. Most, if not all, are from
Campbell/Scott/Anderson Counties of east Tenn. and most were involved in Coal
Mining of that region:
Thanks for any info. you might can offer re: R. B. Coker (my Great
Grandfather, but as you will note, my Grandmother Loma Coker was not REALLY a
Coker (born approx. 3 yrs. after R. B. Coker died), but that's another story.
I'm still very interested in R. B. Coker, where he came from, his parent's
names, etc.

My Great-Grandfather, Andrew Jackson Coker, married a part Cherokee named
Julia Electra. She died in 1966 and is buried in Raines Co., TX. Andrew
had a son with same name born in 1903 in Emory, Raines, TX and is buried in
Elmo, Kaufman, TX. I know that a brother Albert is still living in the
Garland, TX area. I believe they were a large family from the Emory area of
Raines county. Any help on the Cherokee lineage would be helpful as well as
a family line from the Coker line.

I have the 1898 Dawes Rolls and will be glad to do lookups. There were
also a number of Coker's who were descendants of the Creek Nation.
Don't have those rolls, but they may be on line in OK.
