Fred Coker, 12-year-old son of J. H. Coker, who lives four miles north of

measured three feet and eleven inches from tip to tip. Little Fred was proud
of his kill and gave us one of its feet. It had claws like those of an
eagle. It must have been an old bird and had in its time eaten many
chickens, for it was evidently able to fly away with a turkey, judging by
the spread of its wings.
Edward Winkler Coker and Fred Coker were twins. (Source - Harry Coker)

Hi Patricia,
If your grandfather died in 1943, there is a good chance that he won't
appear on the Social Security Death Index. If I remember correctly, most
of the names on it are from about 1960 - present. And sometimes people are
left off -- mistakes do happen, just like on the censuses.
First of all, send away to California to get his death certificate. But
DON'T request it from the state offices! You should request it from the
county clerk's office. California's state offices charge $15-21per request
now and it can take up to 4 months to receive your copy. Call or write the
county where he died and find out their fees (usually $8-13) and best of
all, they respond within a week or two.
Another option would be to send away to the Social Security Administration
Office in Washington, DC, and request a search for his SS-5 Form. That
would be his original application form. I think they require $7.00 to do a
search. Since you don't have his SS number, they might charge more.
Include pertinent info from the death certificate (ie, birth date, death
date, parents names, where he was born, etc.)
Since he was in WW1, there are some army records on him. But the trick is
finding them. You can send a request to St. Louis for his military file,
but they won't look for it until you can supply them with either his social
security number or his military enlistment number. They will NOT do an
alphabetical search. And to make matters worse, they had a fire in 1973
that destroyed a lot of WW1 & WW2 records (up to the letter "H" I think).
To get around this, send a letter to your local Veterans Administration
Office, ATTN: Veterans Records/Pension Records. Give them his name,
approximate dates of service, widow's/pensioner's name (or both since they
both probably drew on his pension), date & place of birth, date & place of
death, and your relationship to him. Your local office will route your
letter to the appropriate field office and they will send you his VA
pension file. It will take 3-4 months for all of this but it is worth it!
Best of all, this is a free service.
Within his file, you'll find the Army Number that you need to request his
military file from St. Louis. This is where the National Archives has it's
Military Record Depository. After you fill in their paperwork with the
number that you got from the VA, if they have your grandfather's file
still, you should receive notification in a couple of months. Hopefully,
yours won't have been destroyed in their fire. Even if it has though, the
VA file will be able to fill in the blanks.
I hope that this helps!

If your grandmother received a pension for your grandfather for World War i
service then the veteran's administration will have an application that your
grandmother made to receive the pension. I suggest you start with them, you
will
be surprised at what you learn.
Kindest regards, BigCoker
Hi Patricia,
On your Grandfather, did you try and get a death certificate here in
California on him ??? If it is filled out correctly,
it would have his birthday and place and parents name.
Also, if you know where he might have been in 1900, 1910 & 1920 the census
would tell you a lot, such as where his
parents were born.
Start with what you know and work back-------- there's a "bunch" of top
researchers on this rootsweb.

Have not been visiting this site long but have been reading the digest modes.
But I have a question. Just started doing background on my Coker family, we
are from Texas. My father is Walter Donald Coker and he has two brothers name
James Coker and Jack Coker(J.C.) There parents was Ida Mae Coker and Jasper
Edward Coker. Now my grandfather Jasper died December 24,1943 in Bakersfield
California, and I called the cemetary but that is all they had on him they
did not even know when he was born. They did say he was 45 when he died so I
take it he was born in 1898. I checked the ss# on the internet but he is not
listed but my grandmother is. I know he was in ww1 and my grandmother
recieved a pension check on him before she passed away. If i requested her
ss# paper would his information be on there. Or what should i do. Im new and
lost. I would like to have a birth certificate but do not know were he was
born. I think his dad died at a young age also and his mother remarried I
think she married a Bennett. But i'm stuck and lost. Help

This is an open letter to the folks at Liszt.com and the users of the SCRoots,
DuBose, and Coker email Forums.
I've written to liszt.com several times about this problem. The liszt.com
archive service hasn't been working for a long time now for the following
forums.
http://www.liszt.com/read/SCRoots-L/http://www.liszt.com/read/DuBose-L/http://www.liszt.com/read/Coker-L/
Is this service broken forever? Should I relocate these Forum archives to
another service? If not, when can I expect the archive service to be repaired?
A reply from someone at liszt.com would be appreciated.

Thomas Grant Coker, "Square Tom", was my Great Grandfather. His daughter,
Mary Ella Coker was my Grandmother. As soon as I saw "Square Tom" it made
immediate sense to me. In this day and age, someone who is "square" may be
considered kind of "dorky", someone very inhibited, or someone with little
personality. However, back in the days of old, the word "square" in
describing someone was very complimentary. It meant someone who was honest
and true, dependable, a person of values, and a straight shooter (and I
don't mean guns). Take for example lyrics to the wonderful old song,
"Mary". At the end it goes: "And there is something there that sounds so
square; It's a grand old name". I named one of my daughters, "Mary", at a
time when the name was no longer in vogue. I'm glad she is happy with her
name. It's actually Mary Jo (for Mary&Joseph) as she was born on Christmas
Eve as was also her Great Grandmother, Mary Ella COKER. It will always be a
Grand Old Name and also one which is Square. My Great Grandmother, Mary
COKER was full of love, faith, a hard-working, non-complaining widow and
mother of 5. She was a wonderful, loving, giving Christian all her life. I
think she was definitely "square". I am so thankful for her influence on my
life. She certainly passed on the faith, love and honor handed down to her
from "Square Tom".
>From my Random House Dictionary: Square means Conventional or satisfying in
style or outlook; not hip. Straightforward and unequivocal. Just, Fair or
Honest. Being square is leaving no balance on debts; having all accounts
settled. Square was probably even Rare way back in "Square Tom's" Day.
However, I do think it was considered a most admirable trait. It's really a
shame it has now become "hip'" to lie and deceive. To me the most
appropriate definition of Square is: Honorable. Being popular or hip is
certainly not worth the price.
Wouldn't it be just great if people would be "square" with one another.
Then we'd have no liars, cheats, thieves or adulterers. We could accept
people at face value. What a wonderful world it would be!! Full of joy!
It sounds as if someone who was square was honest, just and trustworthy.
There must be millions of folks now wishing they could square away all their
credit cards and debts and perhaps be like "Square Tom Coker". I know there
are many of you out there who are good and kind, honest and square! How
many times have we heard the expression: "I need to get squared away"!
Love to All my Coker Cousins! BettySue bettysue(a)erols.com
P.S. I'd love to hear any comments or other viewpoints. Who is Phillip
Thomas?

It seems that the people that gave me the info had in mind it was an "Indian

Have you considered that it might be "Squire" rather than" Square"? In my
years, I have learned that names were recorded as the recorder heard them.
Probable answer!
I have come up with info that Thomas Grant Coker was called Square Tom and
that his father was Phil Tom. Can anyone shed any light on this?
