I don't know whether the above information was directed to me of to some
other person. I have information of Yound Dempsey Coker's family and
have photographs, one from a newspaper, taken in the early part of this
century and one from c. 1880s. If you are interested, I can send you
photas as an attachment in PDD format. I have sent copies to other
people but have never heard from them so do not know if the
transmission/download was successful.
I would like to compare notes on Y.D. Coker's family. If you
have FTM software I can send my notes in RTF format.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION:
The computer tells me I do not have the software needed to read some of the
Forum web pages. What do I do?
ANSWER:
The problem is probably not with the pages or links. It is probably caused
because you have old software (e.g. web browser) installed that needs to be
upgraded or replaced.
If you are using AOL, CompuServe, Prodigy, WebTV, or some other service that
provides a software package integrated with the service, then you need to look
for a solution in the online help materials or technical support provided by
your service provider. If you are using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft
Internet Explorer, make sure you have the latest version installed. Whatever
software you are using, check to see if there is an upgrade or newer version
available that might solve your problems.
A few additional recommendations are:
1. For computer savvy people, and others who can figure out how to install and
upgrade computer programs, I recommend they not use AOL, Prodigy, or similar
services that require customers to use their proprietary software packages. My
opinion is that limiting the customer to use of a proprietary software package
does not give them the best and broadest range of compatibility for using the
Internet. For this category of people, I recommend obtaining Internet access
from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) that allows the user to select from a
variety of available browsers (e.g. Netscape Navigator, MS Internet Explorer)
and email programs (e.g. Netscape Messenger, Eudora Pro).
2. For people who can't or won't handle installation and maintenance of computer
software, I recommend using a service like AOL, WebTV, Prodigy, Compuserve,
etc. Those types of services generally include a proprietary software package
with the service. They might not allow the customer to select and use other
software programs with their service. But, they generally provide support for
their packaged software and make periodic upgrades easily available. The major
advantage, in my opinion, of these types of integrated services is that they are
usually easier to install, use, and maintain. The major disadvantage, in my
opinion, is that they usually restrict the customers ability to select and use
other, sometimes better, software options.
3. Regardless which of the above options a person chooses, I recommend seeking
out and obtaining the fastest Internet access you can afford. The following is
a list of service options you may want to investigate and consider.

It's great to hear from you. The above is my great-great
grandfather. I have lots of info about his children, their
spouses and children but I had nothing about John Wesley's
parents and siblings. Is he you ancestor? If you are descended from his
brother, then we are surely "cousins".
I show 8 children:
Eliza Jane M: Michael Owen Corley (my great-gr.parents)
Thomas W. m: Sarah (?)
Phillip m: Nancy (?)
John Richard m: (?)
Elizabeth Ann m: (1) William Robertson (2) Gallant Hardy
(I have corresponded with some of her descendants)
Martha m: (?)
James Francis M: (?)
Spencer Munroe L.
m: Rhoda Mitchell
I've had messages from Sue - she had some data I didn't have... so this is
my lucky day!

The indian info is correct. Notice that my GGgrandmother was a full blooded
Cheraw Indian.
Also, I'm sure were related somehow. Most of the Cokers hail from England
or Ireland and came to America-SC,GA and then spread to the US interior.
I hope your search is fruitful.

Jimmy: Dempsey Coker, b. c 1800 in SC married Polly (Margaret Ellison) and
they were in Yazoo County, MS by 1820. It is said that they met on their way
to MS from AL. There is also a record of Moses and Dempsey Coker buying land
in Washington County, AL around 1815. I think the two families knew each
other in SC. Also, I think this Moses Ellison married a Mary Coker, possibly
Dempsey, Sr.'s sister, but I have no proof. I do not think we have a Henry
in the line but I will check to be sure. Joy in AL
I have the John Wesley and his family from Bullock County, Georgia. Before
that I do not know. After the death of his father, Mary with her children
settled in Calhoun City, Miss., near a James Coker (I am not sure what the
relationship if any). From there I am not sure. My GGGrandfather moved to
Texas and died in Fannin County, Honey Grove, Texas. The rest of the siblings
I am trying to find out where they are.
On 11/10/98 Steve Coker wrote several really great articles on the Melungeon
background that I kept in my notebook for future reference. If you haven't
read them yet, it is really worth looking at. It also gives a sites on the
Melungeons and some letters and information written about their life. I have
heard stories from others in my family about Indian princesses marrying some
of the Cokers, that is why I was very interested in the background. I don't
know if we are part of this background, but I really enjoyed the history of
the people. Even if we are not, all of this was very much a part of my
family's life at that time. Thanks for asking. You never know, we might
somewhere down the line be related.

Hi, I am also researching information pertaining to John Wesley Coker. John
had 7 other siblings....
Susanna b. 1828 m. John Thacker
Elizabeth Coker b. 1830 m. John Marcum
Ausburn Roger b. ?
Nathan Monroe b. 1833, and
Thomas Grant b. 1824 whom is my GGGrandfather.
I have John and Nancy m. Oct. 27, 1823 having 7 children:
Eliza Jane b. 1825
Thomas W. b. 1827
Phillip b. 1829
Elizabeth Ann b. 1834
Martha b. 1839
James Frances b. 1841
Spencer Monroe b. 1845 m. Rhoda Mitchell
I have mother of John being a Mary, last name unknown, and father unknown.
Father was possibly killed around 1833.
If you have any other information please contact me. If you have any info on
his parents, I would love to here from you. They are really a mystery.

My husband Thos. R. is directly descended from John Dennis Wesley Coker.
As with many families, the name John Wesley is a popular one. To help
you narrow your search, our JDW is born in Smith Co. Tx. April 27, 1850.
He is the son of Leonard Ferguson Coker and Sarah Speers Coker and they
were charter members of two Baptist churches and practiced that religion
until he died , Jan. 6,1928 in Tarrant Co, Tx. (Ft. Worth). The name
probably was for an ancester, though I haven't a clue who, rather than
John Wesley of Methodist fame. I do know his direct chain back four more
generations. He also had a first cousin on the maternal side named John
Dennis Wesley Speers who was about four years older than he.
Hope some of this is useful. Regards, Jo Coker

My thank you to each response private or on list for information received
regarding Clark Coker 1776, This is the right Clark Coker I have searched for
since 1994, Now I am puzzle as to why the spelling was changed from Coker to
Crocker? but all of you were just wonderful.
Thank You

Peggy and anyone else who is interested in the elusive Dempsey Coker line,
this is what I received from Susie Morris of Tueson, Az.
Dempsey Coker (c.1770-1780) m. Linda Irons
Vashti Coker(c. 1826 assuming she married at 18) , their daughter
m.Alexander Corn in 1844. Louisana Corn m. Albert Innarity
Ethel Innerarity m. John Chackas
Mary Emma Dyer m John Michael Morris
There daughter was Sue Morris
There seems to be a missing link in the genealogy but that is what she sent
me. She said in her letter that information was gathered from oral history
collected by Gene Simmons in the 1970's. She sited circumstanical evidence
that Linda was the name of Vashti's daughter, Mary Linda Conn; and that
Beloved Lee Conn named one of his sons Dempsey. I would be interested in how
your line fits in with what I've just written. I believe that there was a
Vashiti another generation later, and of course, thousands of Dempseys. Joy

This is very interesting. The information that I received, says that William
Alexander Conn and Vashtigera Coker's children were Beloved Louis, Sidney
Webster, James, Richard, Mary, Lennie(Linnie) and Lucy.
Beloved Louis did name one of his sons Nathaniel Dempsey(Nathan Demps).
My records show that Lucy married a Albert H. Interratery(Interraity?).
Lucy may very well be Louisianna. Also, Sidney Webster CONN named his second
daughter Wilmath Vashti CONN.
I know that a good bit of this information that I received from distant
relatives has been researched. Unfortunately, the woman doing the research is
now in her 90's and her memory is poor, so I do not have source info. Another
distant relative is sending very researched info on my family and it should
contain clearer info on Vashtigera COKER.
