Hi Jo,
I don't know for a fact where or when Leonard Ferguson Coker died. Some info
on his wife, Sarah.
1870 Census, Navarro co, TX, Sallie Coger, 52, TN-head of household with their
children. I assume Leonard may have died in either Smith co or Navarro co.
1880 Census, Tarrant co, TX. Sarah is living with her son William M Coker,
#262-264
1900 Census, Navarro co, TX. Sarah is living wither her son William M Coker.
I assume Sarah died sometime after 1900 in Navaro co, TX
There may be records there of her in one of the Baptist churches.
Sarah Speer had first married Thomas Nutt. Thomas b abt 1800, died c 1843.
Children were; Penelope, b 1835 TN, married Moses Owens in Smith co, TX, Mary
Jane, b 1837 TN, married Robert Walker, Smith co, TX.
Sarah married Leonard Ferguson Coker 12 July, 1846, Fayette co, TN.
Thoughts on death certificated for J D W Coker. I think that it might be
fairly common that there is missing or misleading information on those
certificates. Sometimes the provider just doesn't know or is just guessing.
My greatgradfather's certificated had his father listed as Levi Coker, born
South Carolina. Actually it was Benjamin Coker, born Alabama. (brother of
Leonard Ferguson) Ben died when his son was less than five years old so it is
easy to see how that kind of information gets lost.
Good luck,
Stan

Guess the brain is going. I seem to have sent this message about 1/2
done.
To continue, the death certificate from Tarrant Co. lists Feb. 17, 1851
as his birthday... that's what I meant about Ed not knowing too much
about his father. It leaves blank father's name, mother's name , their
points of origin. Cause of death was double pneumonia. Wife , Josephine
Trice Coker predeceased him by almost two yrs.. She was seven years
older than he. Both are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Ft. Worth, Tx.
Now we are looking for date and place of death for Leonard Ferguson
Coker and Sarah Speers Coker. I believe she was ten years older than he.
I've seen 1850 census info that lists her as 32 and 22, but the info I
have about the two daughters living in the household and a girl I think
was a sister show them as13, 15, and 17 respectively. Can you help on
this?
Thanks , Jo Coker

Dear Stan, As I wrote you earlier about the bible records we have
showing His birth as April 27, 1850, I should share some new info that I
have to muddy the waters. He is listed as 1/12 age in the Smith Co. 1850
Census, thus making 1849 not possible, but we located his death
certificate and burial records and the information there-in was provided
by his son, Ed Coker, in 1929. Since they were estranged for many years
due to JW abandoning Mary Emmazelle and the two children.
No other immediate survivors are listed in the records or in the
obituaries. Jo Coker

Hello,
I am STILL the seeking the parents of
CHARLTON COKER b. abt. 1788, unkn. location, SC
d. aft. 1860, Banks Co., GA---Please read to the end!!
m.1st July 29, 1827, Franklin Co., GA, MATILDA CHANDLER b.1805
m. 2nd Emily PORTER, a widow with children. She and Charlton have
no issue.
Children of Charlton Coker and Matilda Chandler:
1. ROBERT A. b. abt. 1831
m LATHIA HOUSE
2. GEORGE W. b. abt. 1832
m. RACHAEL E. NATIONS
3. JOHN S. H. b. Dec. 06, 1833, Franklin Co., GA
d. October 21, 1905 Hall Co., GA
m. DELILAH ELIZABETH BRIDGES, dau. WILSON BRIDGES and
1st wife, unk.
4. MARION R. P. b. abt. 1837
5. MARY ELIZABETH b. Abt 1842
6. MATILDA E. b. Abt. 1857
Here's where it gets complicated!
--Charlton Coker paid taxes for a MARY COKER in Franklin Co., GA in
1836-1838. Who is this Mary Coker? Charlton's sister? His mother?
--A MARY COKER m. WILSON BRIDGES, after he is widowed. This is the same
Wilson Bridges who is the mother of Delilah, wife of John S. H. Coker,
Charlton's son. So, this Mary Coker marries the father of Charlton's
daughter-in-law.
--If I can find out more about this Mary Coker, perhaps I can find a clue
as to the ever-elusive parents of Charlton Coker.
I you would search around your database for any of these names, I would
surely appreciate any clue you could give me.

I'm still looking for info on Mary Ola COKER (m. Phillip Gay). I was
finally able to go to National Archives here in Atlanta and found a Phill
Gay married to Mary Gay in the 1920 census records. I have a strong feeling
that this is my Mary Ola as the age and occupation for Phill(ip?) fit
perfectly and there were no other listings for anything close to a Phillip
or initial P. with a wife named Mary. In the census, Mary was 22 yoa, born
in Alabama to parents born in Alabama as well. This makes her a couple of
years older than we originally thought (probably born in 1897 rather than
1900-1901).
The normal business hours for the National Archives conflict dramatically
with my work hours. As a result, I am hampered in trying to go back to 1910
census records for Cokers in Alabama who might have had an 11 or 12 year old
daughter named Mary. In your searches for your Coker relatives, do you have
ANYTHING that might fit? Most probably (but not conclusively) my Mary would
have lived in Shelby or Jefferson counties.
Any advice would be appreciated - I am such a novice at this stuff that I'm
getting frustrated!
Thanks!
Yes, that is exactly the area, my father was raised in Lily/Ona Florida.
Grand father is buried there along with a lot of other cokers.
Also there is a Coker Cemetary somewhere that Dad told me was close by there.
No one uses it now and i beleive it is located in an Orange Grove now.
If you have any more information could you please send to me, thanks Lorelei

Hi, All,
Still looking for the parents of CHARLTON COKER(abt. 1788, SC-aft.
1860, GA)! Anyone see him lurking around the edges of her/his database?
Here is what I have on the family of Matilda Chandler, wife of CHARLTON
COKER, so far.. More to follow. Info from the President of the Chandler
Fam. Association, Joe Burton.
JOHN Chandler b. 1599, England d. 1660, VA
m. Elizabeth _____ Lupo in Elizabeth City CO., VA
John arrived from England in VA on Saturday June 09, 1610 and in
Jamestown the following day. He came on an expedition with Lord
Delaware.
John Chandler married the widow Elizabeth ____ Lupo prior to the
summer of 1637. This marriage brough 400 acres of harborfront land in
the present city of Hampton into John's ownership. This land remained
intact until the fifth generation, when Hannah Chandler began selling off
parcels in 1718.
The male line of Chandlers ended with the death of John IV in 1728,
but there are several female lines.

Notes for Joseph Chandler:
Joseph Chandler was born ca 1755 in Lunenburg Co, VA, a son of
John and Elizabeth Chandler. The family moved to Granville Co, NC when
Joseph was still a minor. He enlisted in Granville Co. during the
Revolution,
but is not listed in any known records of those who served in the
Militia.
The indirect record of his service in the Revolution was in Georgia after
he had relocated from Granville Co, NC. His name is clearly included in
an
alphabetic listing of Georgia Revolutionary Soldiers, and he was
qualified
for a bounty warrant for land because of his service (Source 17). The
land
was granted to his widow, Nancy Ann Turman Chandler, after his death.
Joseph acquired other property in Franklin Co, GA and lived there for
many
years as a Justice of the Peace and Judge until his death in 1822. His
tenure in Wilkes, Elbert and Franklin Cos, GA is well documented.

Social Security Administration
Guide to Freedom of Information Act Requests
http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia.htm
----------
Background
----------
This guide explains how you can get information from the Social Security
Administration (SSA) about the kinds of records we keep. Members of the public
can get documents from Federal agencies based on the Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA). The FOIA was established to make the Federal government accountable to
the public for its actions and prevents agencies from having secret policies.
-------------------------
Records We Make Available
-------------------------
Under FOIA, you can inspect and copy the following SSA records in any of our
field offices or headquarters in Baltimore, or you can get them from the SSA
FOIA Internet Home Page at Social Security Online:
Policy statements and SSA manuals and instructions,
Final opinions from adjudicating administrative cases, and
An index of SSA's administrative staff manuals and instructions.
The Internet address of Social Security Online is: http://www.ssa.gov
You can also find information about SSA records under the Government Printing
Office's (GPO) Government Information Locator System (GILS). GILS contains
information on government records kept by Federal agencies, and is available
electronically on the Internet at:
http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/gils/gils.html
---------------------
Making a FOIA Request
---------------------
If you want to request a record which we don't publish or which we don't make
available in one of our offices, give us a detailed description of the record(s)
you want. You should give us as many details, such as names, dates, subject
matter and location, if you know them. Not having a good description could delay
our answer or prevent us from finding the records you want. We will ask you to
revise your request if we need more information to find the record(s).
It is easy to make a written FOIA request by mail. No form is needed. We have
two locations where we process FOIA requests, depending on the type of request.
Mark both the envelope and its contents: "FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST " or
"INFORMATON REQUEST." Don't include a return envelope.
If you are requesting copies of applications for social security numbers (Form
SS-5) for people who are deceased, address your request to:
Social Security Administration
Office of Central Records Operations
FOIA Workgroup
P.O. Box 17772
300 N. Greene Street
Baltimore, Maryland 21290
Send all other FOIA requests to:
Social Security Administration
Office of Disclosure Policy,
3-A-6 Operations Building,
6401 Security Boulevard,
Baltimore, Maryland, 21235
You can also write or give your written request to any Social Security field
office.
------------------------------------
Records We Generally Cannot Disclose
------------------------------------
The FOIA does not require agencies to disclose all records. Some examples of
records we may not disclose are:
classified records,
internal personnel rules,
confidential by law,
trade secrets or confidential financial information,
personal information about living people, or
records of investigations.
-----------------
Fees and Payments
-----------------
You may be required to pay a fee for the time we spend searching, reviewing, and
copying records. We may charge a fee even if we are unable to locate or disclose
any information or if we no longer have the record. SSA has two different fee
schedules for requests for records: the FOIA fee schedule and a standard
schedule based on average fee for frequently asked for documents.
---------
FOIA Fees
---------
The FOIA fee schedule has different provisions for different types of
requesters. We will tell you what we will charge after looking at your request.
Also, we let you know if your request will cost more than $250 before starting a
search.
The FOIA fees are based on the grade of the employee doing the work and the
amount of time spent on the request, plus 10 cents per page for photocopying.
The hourly fees for 1997 are:
Grade Fee
GS-1 through GS-8 $14
GS-9 through GS-14 $28
GS-15 and above $50
---------------------------------------------
Fee Schedule for Frequently Requested Records
---------------------------------------------
Requests for records of Social Security number holders, claimants and wage
earners are covered by a separate fee schedule. This fee schedule is based on
the full cost of processing the request.
We use an average fee for some frequently requested records:
Social Security Number application search when you have the number - $7.00,
Social Security Number application search when you don't have the number. In
these cases we need identifying information (name, place and date of birth,
father's full name, and mother's given and maiden names) to find the record -
$16.50.
Search for a claim file - $14
Photocopying material(s) - 10 cents per page plus postage.
You can pay us by credit cards; we accept only Mastercard and Visa. We also
accept checks or money orders payable to the Social Security Administration.
---------------------------
How We Process Your Request
---------------------------
Processing Categories
---------------------
We try to handle your request within 20 days from the date we receive it.
Sometimes it may take us longer depending on the difficulty of finding the
record and how much other work we have. We process requests under a "first in"
"first out" basis in three categories:
1. Simple requests where the receiving office has all the information it needs
for the answer. These requests will take the least amount of time to process.
2. Requests where the receiving office needs more information from another SSA
office(s).
3. Requests which require more information from another SSA or government
office(s), and which may require additional decisions on releasing records from
these offices.
These requests take the longest to answer.
Expedited Process
-----------------
In addition to the above categories, we provide expedited handling when we find
that there is a compelling need for the information. This is in cases when the
request:
1. involves an imminent threat to a person's life or physical safety; or,
2. is made by a member of the media to obtain information that the public
should know about urgently. The records would cover actual or alleged Federal
Government activity.
If you think that your request should be expedited, please explain your reasons
fully in your request. Under this process, we decide within 10 days from the
date of the request whether we will expedite it and notify you of our decision.
Denials and Appeals
-------------------
If we decide that we cannot disclose the records you seek in whole or in part,
we can deny your request. In cases where we can provide some of the records, we
will do so. In cases where we cannot disclose some or all of the records you
requested, we will send you a written denial, explaining our reason(s) and your
appeal rights, including going to the courts.
Privacy Act Requests
--------------------
If you are requesting your own record(s), we will process your request under the
Privacy Act instead of under the FOIA. If you are requesting another person's
records, you need the person's written consent to disclose them to you. In these
cases, send your request, with the signed consent, to the manager of the Privacy
Act System of Records, (if you have this information), your local Social
Security office, or the Office of Disclosure Policy at the above address.

I don't have a Tonnie but I have a lot of Cokers in the
Lily/Limestone area of Florida which is not far from Ona. Is it? My
Cokers came to that part or Florida from North Florida. Madison
County, I believe.

Mr. Johnson:
I noticed in your listing a "Robert B. Coker, Sr. (b:1740 NC; d: aft.1807 GA)
and Robert B. Coker, Jr. b: 1774 d: 1837 Laurens Co., SC". I am trying to
find out more about my Gr-Grandfather R. B. Coker b: 1861 - d: 1902 m:
Rebecca Allen (1866 - 1944). They are both buried at Cumberland View Church
Cemetery in Campbell Co., TN. My Gr-Grandfather R.B. Coker and many of the
other graves located at Cumberland View were moved to this current location
from the Loyston community when TVA flooded the valley with the construction
of Norris Dam and Norris Lake in 1936. My Grandmother, Loma Coker Phillips
and our Coker/Phillips family always gathered there for Memorial Day
("Decoration Day") and the elder relatives walked us through the cemetery each
year telling us wonderful stories as we placed our home-made flowers on each
grave. But I really know very little about my Gr-Grandparents, R. B. Coker
and Rebecca Allen Coker, however I do have all of their 9 children's names,
etc. All of their children (my Grandmother, Gr-Aunts, Uncles) lived in the
Campbell/Scott/Anderson Co. areas of east Tenn., and most involved in coal
mining. I understand, but have no proof, that the "R" of my R. B. Coker
stands for Robert. Any knowledge of the Cokers of east Tenn.? My Grandmother
Loma Coker Phillips was the youngest of the 9 children and passed away in
1992.
Thanks for any info.
Regards, Rebecca Phillips-Parker BeckParker(a)aol.com
Would anyone happen to know the ancestery of Catherine's husband, Bill?
This Bokoshe OK is only approximately 30 minutes from Wister, where
Nancy Coker b. ca 1850, lived at one time. Nancy was my ggg
grandmother.
Sorry, but I do not know anything about Tonnie Coker. Best regards
