Subject: Joseph Coker lineage
Dear Cousins:
As promised to several of you, the following is the lineage which my mother has traced for several years. As you can see, there are several gaps to fill, and the number 8, Charles Coker, Sr., she believes to be accurate but really has no documentations.
We would very much appreciate any additions, revisions, or other information which any of you may have pertaining to this line, and hope this may prove useful to some of you.

Hi all,
This letter with the Stewart name reminded me to ask everyone about A
Steward -Coker feud. There was a duel in Georgia? or Florida? I read about
a duel between a Stewart and Coker. Who has information about this event?
Who? Where? Why?
Thank You

Are your family members or co-workers tired of seeing all your genealogy email?
If you want fewer genealogy emails, try subscribing to the Digest version (-D)
which compiles several messages into a single batch email message. Or, try the
following.
1. Most Internet Service Providers allow their customers to use separate email
addresses for each family member sharing an account. Find out if your service
provider will do this for you. They should, it is a common practice. If they
don't, look around for a better provider.
2. Install a Browser and Email program which allows you to setup user
configurations for each person using the computer. Netscape does this very
well. You can download it from http://www.netscape.com. Note: AOL users are
limited to the AOL email program.
3. Setup user configurations for each different email address.
When you set things up this way, each person sharing the computer will be able
to send and receive email for their own email address. And, they will not get
the email of other people sharing the computer. The program will keep the
emails sorted and saved separately for each person.

Dear Mom:
Please find enclosed, copy of information obtained to date about the Cokers.
I am now working on determining the father of Whitley Coker, Sr., whom we
believe to be William of Edgecombe County, N. C. I hope to have this tracked
down and verified by Whitley, Sr.'s mention in the deed.
I am now in the process of verifying the name of Whitley Coker, Sr.'s wife
(Nancy McKenzie). As soon as we have tied down Whitley Sr.'s father and mother,
we will tie down his brothers and sisters. We can state with great conviction
that our lineage will go back to John II who was the son of John Coker of Isle
of Wytes ["Wytes" struck out and "Wight" written in] in England, and who came to
this country around 1618-20.
Very interesting work. Giving you a copy of a chart to let you look-see at
big boy's work. Also sending information to Francis as promised - finally. Love
that mean boy Francis. Love that big fat Arnell and hope you both have lost 25
lbs. more.
I am sending along an extra copy for Mr. Heyward as promised. Please have Dad
and Mr. Heyward give me all the data you and Dad and Mr. Heyward can come up
with for my files. Will love all of you for it.
I am very busy and for now I will say Good-Bye and God Bless You.

Gentlemen:
We are trying to tie down some of our family history and would appreciate
your assistance. Our great, great, great Uncle John apparently resided in
Christian County, Kentucky about 1720 and we would appreciate knowing how we
could obtain information relative to his marriage.
We also find that one branch of the Cokers settled in Yellow Creek which is
now Harlan County. In addition, we also find that Whitley consistently crops up
in our ancestry and we note with great interest that there is a Whitley County,
Kentucky.
We know the Cokers moved about in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, and
South Carolina between 1620 and 1800.
Could you tell us the proper way to proceed in order that we might obtain
copies of any Coker papers which would help us in our study?
Thank you very much for your assistance.

Dear Jim:
There is a little question between my brother and I which I would like to get
settled once and for all.
Francis consistently tells me that great, great grandfather, Whitley Coker,
Jr., or Sr., left a pack of papers in trust or in estate in Sumter County and
probably at the Court House. Since this would be my great grandfather, or great,
great grandfather, I see no reason why -
(1) We should not be able to determine if there is such a packet of papers,
and
(2) I see no reason why we should not be allowed to have the papers, or a
copy of the papers if we are willing to pay the cost of copying.
You know how it is Jim, I am just simply tired of arguing about it - - let's
get it settled. Anyway, I would be most appreciative if you would engage a
genealogist in Sumter at a reasonable fee and have her scour the records for all
of the information on Whitley Coker, Jr., and Whitley Coker, Sr., and send them

Dear Mr. Coker:
In reply to your letter of November 30, this is to advise that we have no
record of a land grant to Thomas Coker for Revolutionary War service. Neither do
we have a grant in that name in Brunswick or Surry Counties. The only grants
that we have in Brunswick or Surry Counties in the name of Coker (Cocker) are as
follows:
BRUNSWICK COUNTY
----------------
James Coker - 100 acres, Dec. 8, 1794, "On W. side
of Waggamaw river," Grant #287, Book
84, Page 68, File #584.
James Coker - 100 acres, Dec. 7, 1795, "On W. side
of Waggamaw river," Grant #296, Book
89, Page 318, File #618.
SURRY COUNTY
------------
Joseph Coker - 200 acres, April 3, 1780, "On the Big
Bear Shole creek," Grant #344, Book
41, Page 56, File #345.
Robert Coker - 400 acres, April 3, 1780, "On Toms
Creek," Grant #292, Book 41, Page 37,
File #293.
Typewritten copies of the above grants may be obtained for $.50 each, however,
the grants give no information other than the location of the land and the calls
by metes and bounds.
The Department of Archives and History here in Raleigh has many old records
such as wills, marriage bonds, inventories, etc. May I suggest that you write to
that department and inquire if it has any information on your Coker family.
Very truly yours,
THAD EURE
Secretary of State
