Subject: Joseph Coker lineage
I have just begun to use the internet, so please pardon my ineptness. I am
a descendant of Joseph Coker, who died in Chatham County, North Carolina in
about 1775. His widow was Milley (or Milsey). Sons: Isaac Coker, born
1750/1760, married Nancy Daniel, died May 6, 1853, Henry County, Georgia;
Jacob Coker, Abraham Coker, and Malachi Coker. In the 1820 census of
Elbert County, Georgia, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Malachi Coker were each
heads of households. I am seeking themarriage record of Joseph and Milley
and what her maiden name was, and also any information prior to them. I
also want to know who Jacob married and the names of his children, and also
the same information for Malachi. From reading your very interesting
posting of April 6, it appears that we are both descended from a Joseph
Coker, and if this is the same person we are related. I am very new at
this, and just lucked upon your email of that date. I would very much
appreciate any information you may have about this. My name is Joseph
Coker and I live in LaFollette, Tennessee. Thanks for any assistance or
suggestions.

- ----------------------------
Transcribed by Steven J. Coker from a true copy which was certified on March 21,
1983, by Hazel B. Jones, Deputy Clerk of Superior Court, Northampton County,
North Carolina.
General Notes:
1. This will was made known to me by my uncle Frederick T. Coker, Jr. He
discovered it during research he sponsored and conducted in the 1960's.
2. A word or phrase shown inside parentheses with question marks indicates the
transcriber is not certain as to the correct reading of the word or phrase. In
particular, the transcriber is unfamiliar with the handwriting in the signature
(? Ress Greean Delk ?). Instead of Ress the first name might be Ross or even
Kelly. The rest of the name could similarly be other than as shown. This
signer was obviously an officer of the court. So it should be possible to find
the true spelling of this name. However, this signature is thought to be of
little consequence in tracing the Coker genealogy.
3. A blank underlined space "__" indicates letters or words are missing or
illegible in the copy. In particular, a small portion of the top right edge of
the document was imperfectly copied. As a result, there may be one to three
characters missing at the end of a few lines near the top of the document. It
is apparent from the context of the writing that these possibly missing
characters do not change the meaning. However, comparison to the original
document or another copy is needed for completeness.
4. For this presentation, little attempt has been made to layout the text
identical to that shown in the document. In particular, words per line and line
breaks may vary.
5. Sons Sugar and Thomas mentioned in the will are later found in Sumter
District, South Carolina. Also, daughter Mason Coker Bird is later found in
Sumter District, SC. Other Cokers mentioned may also have moved to South
Carolina.
6. Benjamin is believed descended from Cokers in Virginia.

Joy,
I've been on vacation and just got back to read your e-mail. Just wanted to
thank you for sending out that info on Caleb and Thomas. It all relates to
some of my wife's direct ancestors. I'll have to see if I can lay my hands
on a copy of "The Cokers of Carolina." I'm in the Air Force and currently
stationed in Utah so it is pretty easy to get to the Morman Family History
Library to look up reference material. Again, thanks for the info.

Temperance COAKER age 57 F b. SC
C. T. COAKER age 15 M b. MS
P. A. COAKER age 22 M b. MS
Martha GILLIAM age 14 F b. MS

They are living next to James Lawrence Samuel Butts CLOWER, wife Fatha

Also, in the 1840 Shelby Co., AL Census, there is a P. COKER, who would
have been about the same age as the one above. Also, a James COKER
listed on the same page, b. between 1820-1825. Both were living close
to James Lawrence and Fatha Ann.
Still trying to find Fatha Ann's parents and siblings. Does anyone know
anything more about this P. COAKER/COKER?
Thanks very much,
