Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This is a copy of the "canned" message usually sent to people who are having
trouble subscribing or sending messages to the Coker Forum. I'm posting a copy
to the forum for general reference in case its needed now or in the future.

THIS IS A PRE-WRITTEN, SEMI-AUTOMATED REPLY:
Apparently you recently attempted to either send a message to the COKER
Genealogy Forum, but it was rejected. Or you attempted to send a subscription
change command which may have failed.
If you were trying to post a message to the Forum which failed, it may be that
the Forum server did not find you on the subscriber list. If you are not
subscribed to the Forum then just subscribe and resend your message.
If you are already subscribed, then perhaps you sent the message to the wrong
address. Messages for the Forum should be sent to
COKER-L(a)rootsweb.com
NOT COKER-D(a)rootsweb.com
AND NOT COKER-L-request(a)rootsweb.com
The address with "-request" is for subscription actions, not for message
posting.
Sometimes messages are rejected because the sender, or their Internet Service
Provider, has slightly changed their email address or the configuration in their
email program. For example, you may have subscribed when your email address was
myname(a)pop.thecompany.com, but it may have changed to myname(a)thecompany.com
dropping the "pop" from the address. Little changes like this cause the server
to not recognize you as a subscriber. Or, you might have added some extra
characters in the email address which are confusing the Forum server.
If something like that is what happened, try to temporarily change your address
back to what it was, and unsubscribe using the old address. Then, change the
address back to the new version and resubscribe. This should make the server
recognize you at the new address and stop sending mail to the old address.
If you can't solve the problem using the methods described above, then send me
an email message describing what is happening. If necessary, I can manually
make the subscription changes for you.
Be sure to tell me both your old and new email addresses so that I can manually
make the changes. Personal attention may take 24-72 hours to take effect.
Sometimes it may take longer. I apologize for any delay and thank you for your
kind patience.

Retrieving Archived Messages
BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT ANYTHING DESCRIBED IN THESE INSTRUCTIONS BE SURE THAT YOU
HAVE READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS AND ALL THE NOTES GIVEN AT THE BOTTOM. DO NOT
ABUSE THIS SERVICE. KEEP ARCHIVE RETRIEVALS TO THE MINIMUM NECESSARY. THEY PUT
AN EXTRA LOAD ON THE SERVERS.
1. THE DIRECTORY OF DIGEST FILES.
To find out which 1998 COKER digests are available send a message like this.
To: COKER-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
Subject: archive
dir volume98
quit
This will return a directory listing for all the 1998 COKER digests. The
digests may have been zipped (gz) or they may be in raw text (rw) format. A
typical listing reported might be as follows.
-rw-rw---- 1 slist slist 30432 Mar 11 05:22 77
This tells you that digest Issue #77 was sent out using Smartlist on March 11th
at 05:22, the archived digest is only available in raw format and the file is
about 30,432 (30k) in size.
2. RETRIEVING A DIGEST.
To get the COKER 1998 digest Issue #77 in raw text form send a message like
this.
To: COKER-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
Subject: archive
get volume98/77
quit
If available in gz format, use "get volume98/77.gz" to get the gz version.
3. NOTE WELL THE FOLLOWING.
a. If you haven't read ALL of these instructions, then don't try any of this.
b. If you do not understand these instructions, then don't try any of this.
c. Turn your signature off. If you must append a signature, include the "quit"
command to prevent the archive server from interpreting the signature. If the
archive server tries to interpret the signature as commands, the results may be
something you really don't want to happen and both you and the service may
regret it.
d. Turn off all "card" attachments. If the archive server tries to interpret
the card as commands, the results may be something you really don't want to
happen.
e. Do not use capitals, directories and files are case sensitive.
f. It may take from a few minutes to several hours or more before the server
sends the requested file. Be patient. Do not resend the request. Wait until
you get a response from the request before you try something else. If you don't
get a reply within 24 hours then the request probably failed and you may want to
try again.
g. Don't send a lot of requests for archives. Use this utility sparingly. It
adds significantly to the server's workload.
h. For zipped files you will need to know how to unzip the file using a utility
like WinZip (shareware). You can download and install unzipping utility
programs from many shareware sites on the Internet. If you don't know how to do
this, then you should learn before you try to retrieve the archives.
i. DO NOT SEND /* COMMANDS TO RETRIEVE ARCHIVES! Retrieving all of the messages
in a list archive at once using a /* command will typically double the load on
the list server, and possibly worse. On a high volume list this may be a
request for thousands of messages, which is too much for the list server to
handle, and will probably kill your own mailbox. This is at best reverse
spamming and at worst is malicious hacking and may be a punishable offense.
Instead of flooding the list server with messages, you're asking the list server
to flood you with messages. Either action is unwise and may cause damage to
both the server and you. DO NOT USE THE /* COMMAND!
j. The COKER forum began in 1998. There are no archived messages for COKER
before 1998.
k. Don't ask me to explain any of this. If you can't figure it out from what
I've written in these instructions, then you are somebody who should not be
using this special utility service.

This is one of the better known authors who published these works many
years ago. The book is "Southside Virginia Families, Vol II" by John
Bennett Boddie. I have copies of pages that pertain to Cokers. These were
taken from a 1956 edition which I am sure was a reprint of the original.
Most libraries that have a genealogy section will have this book. If not,
see if your public library can get it on loan. I don't know if any copies
are available for sale, I am checking on this.
As for your Thomas, Boddie states that he was a son of "James, said to be
of Greenville Co. VA (cut off from Brunswick). His will was dated Nov 30,
1792 and proven 1793. Ref DAR Mag 1933, p.295. Children: Thomas, Sally,
Dolly, Lucy, Betsy, Mafsey. This Thomas may have been the one who died
1818 Bibb Co AL"
So I would also try to see a copy of the DAR Mag referenced to see what
else is there. Again, good gen. libraries would have the DAR mags.
Boddie takes the above James (wife's name not mentioned) back to his
parents: John Coker Jr and Priscilla Geddings. His will was probated May
22, 1759. He lived in Surrey (VA) and ended up in Andrew's Parish,
Brunswick, when a good part of Surrey was cut off to form Brunswick in 1720.
That should give you locations to find copies of wills, etc.

I came across this mabe it will help.
Dwight Stipes
To Ken Taylor and Dwight Snipes re questions stemming from Thomas Coker
RevWar Pension.
I'm not sure where your other Thomas Coker interests are, but here's some
things to consider. The census of 1790 SC shows a Thomas in the Cheraw
District with others in the household. There is also one in the Georgetown
District with apparent family.
In 1800 SC, there are even more.
Charleston Thomas COCKER p.88 with family
Abbeville Thomas COFER p.33 with family
Darlington Thomas COCKER p.124 with family
Another Thomas same page with family. Also a James,
George, John and Caleb there.
Gerogetown Thomas Coker and apparent wife
Laurens Thomas Coker p.18 with family. Also same page Temp,
Francis, Drury, James,
John, Calvin, Robert Jr. and Sr.
Pendleton Thomas Coker w/family p.121
So there you have 7 Thomas Cokers in 1800SC, probablly more in NC.
Now, looking at Boddie's book, p.86, he lists two other Thomas Cokers
besides the son of Joseph & Mary Aldridge Coker. Boddie shows that
Joseph's sister, Priscilla, m. a cousin named Thomas Coker and they had a
son who was a Lt.Thomas Coker (said to be from Mars Bluff) -he would be a
cousin to RevWar Thomas. Also a brother of Joseph, James, names a son
Thomas in his will - another cousin..While Boddie has a lot of references,
we can never be sure of all his data. Boddie does say that the Thomas who
was son of James "may" be the one who died 1818 in Bibb Co. AL.
The cousin that was shown in the RW Pension was shown as "Thomas Coker a
cousin of mine, Lieut". So it must have been the son of Priscilla.
That's all for now.

I've created the above listed web site for the Coker Forum. Haven't had time to
work much on it yet, but it gives you the links to the message archives. Maybe
over the coming weekend I will have time to work on it more. Keep checking it
for improvements from time to time. The topic of this forum is the genealogy
and history of the Coker surname, and closely allied lines. Anything on that
topic which is decent and suitable for a general public audience, including
children, may be posted in the forum. Off-topic material shouldn't be.

Hi,
I can tell you that my mother (a Coker) wears combat boots. The nicest
mother you would want, but she has a way about her. Her mother was the same
as is all her sisters. My grandfaher had sisters the same. The Coker woman
in my family are mountain women they will shoot first and then ask you
what you want. The stories of my great Aunt Evia about her horse riding
feats and I was told that she could out ride and out shoot any man. She was
taugh by he mother who had 4 of 5 spouses (Actural number unknown). She is
the daughter of Thomas Coker and of the Mountains of Tennessee. Fannie
Whittle Coker as told by Aunt Eva was about the same. All the real bad
ones were single and never married.
I don't know how true these tales are but they were told to us and all the
Women were given special instruction on handling men.
More detail is with held for fear,

Whoa there Bob.....I have been sitting by and reading these exchanges with a
lot of interest, but you sure know how to grab a guy....I am a descendent of
the Thomas Coker who died in 1818 in Bibb Co, AL. I don't know who his
ancestors were and have been beating my head against the wall with all these
"Toms". You refer to a book by Boddie. What is this book and how can I get a
copy of the reference to the Thomas who died in Bibb County? Can you help?
Thanks,

how do i search the Message archives?
can I post a quary? How?
If I find COKERS that are unrelated to me should I send them to someone?
I have a couple of tombstones. gives name, date, and place of bariel and
birthdate.
let me know.
Did my question about Betty Coker 1826-1937 married to Enoch Smith both born
in Alabama get posted? She is my GG grandmother and I am looking for her
family.
I did recieve all of the suggestions and policies and I will try to abide by
them.

Dwight again,
I though you might have some more information. I have covered all normal
research resources in and about Tenn. There are no records left of early
times for Sevier Co., TN. because of a fire.
When we found that this Thomas was in Sevier Co, TN. And was a Rev. War
Participation and the timing was close this has to be this Thomas. Yes,
this Thomas was alone in 1932-34 in KY. That was after he left Tennessee.
The Coker women I know would run off the best Man. There is a whole story
about the Coker women I know, as told by Aunt Eva. None of the Coker women
kept a husband very long. And all their children kept the Coker Name.
Do you think I am on track with you assumptions as to Thomas? The census
doesnt help to much on 1840 and before, unless the individual is
Stationary or owns property at the time of the Census. As you have seen
many of the Cokers moved around a lot. With you being of the line that
Thomas is of I thought you might have more information. Im always open to
discussion on who this Thomas really is. Thank you for your help. Ill
be around if you think of anything else.

OUR HOMEPAGE: http://members.xoom.com/jopet/homepg/welcome.htm
Hi,
The age of Thomas was never discussed because they were never thought of as
a young couple. This Thomas who was a Rev. Participant seem to be the
same he was in Sevier Co. TN. or Tennessee at and about that time. Our
family was always told that Thomas was a Revol. Soldier. My grandfather
talked to me about Thomas, as he was told. My great aunts talked about
Thomas yet none ever knew him, he left after a short time. We are not sure
all the children are his. James the first child (B)1818 is said to be his
son and the some of the four daughters ??? I always use history of the
time to make things more understandable. To know how people though and
acted during a certain time period helps to understand the information you
have.
All the records and information that is and has been discussed here are
based on assumptions and guesses-opinons-stories-records that were
transcribed and published. Its all circumstantial not fact. None of us were
there or have 1st hand information with signatures or thumb prints etc.
Maybe Steve can enlighten us on some of aspects of records.
