Taken from " Lowndes Court House" A chronicle of Hayneville an Alabama Black
Belt village in Lowndes County Alabama. 1820-1900 by Mildred Russell Brewer.
This copywrite was 1951 and book is rare & out of print.
The book includes this statement about settlers who came from South Carolina in
1800-1820.
"About 1820, a band of pioneers established themselves twelve miles southwest of
Hayneville. They called their new home Mt. Willing, for the village in Edgefield
District, South Carolina, from whence they came".
Is this village still in existance? The terrain of Mt. Willing is in the
foothills of south central Alabama. I have records of all burials in the
cemetery. If you think you may have an ancestor buried there, e-mail
coker539(a)aol.com & I will be glad to look up for you. There is no charge !

Subject: spam & crosspost filtering
Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 18:58:26
From: Tim Pierce <twp(a)rootsweb.com>
Spam filtering has just been enabled on all RootsWeb lists. From this point on,
hopefully we all will experience a marked decrease in spam sent to our lists.
WHAT'S BEING FILTERED?
------------------------
What does the list server consider spam? Here's a general summary of what it
looks for:
* Any message sent to more than 10 RootsWeb lists. Heavy crossposting like
this is at least as bad a problem for our servers as spam is.
* Messages from the faked mail host `relay.comanche.denmark.eu'. This is a
hallmark of that insidious Bulls Eye Gold spam.
* Senders with all-numeric e-mail addresses, like 11576(a)1985.com.
* Senders with AOL screen names that have fewer than 3 characters or more than
10; screen names that start with a number; screen names that include
punctuation. According to the AOL postmaster, any AOL address that looks like
this is faked.
* Any message from USA.NET that contains embedded punctuation, like
`free-money(a)usa.net'.
* A message with any of these return addresses:

OUR HOMEPAGE: http://members.xoom.com/jopet/homepg/welcome.htm
Some Forum members may have noticed a new tagline that has been added to the
Forum messages. In case you haven't seen it, I've put a copy of it at the
bottom of this message.
This particular new tagline is intended to emphasize the Forum Policy which
makes SPAM off-topic and not welcome. This is not a change of policy, it is
just a strong reminder of existing, long-standing policy.
This notice is not directed towards regular subscribers who may sometimes send a
non-offensive, non-commercial, slightly off-topic message. The kind of serious
offenses for which this notice was primarily intended are bulk-type commercial
email, pornography, malicious messages from hackers, unapproved blatant
commercial announcements, and other annoying inappropriate SPAM.
There has been a scourge of blatant off-topic, commercial bulk mail SPAM sent to
several of the email services. SCRoots received some, but luckily it was
rejected by the SCRoots mail routing program and was not distributed to the
subscribers. When such SPAM has been received, I've written to the SPAM
emailers personally notifying them not to send SPAM messages to SCRoots. I've
also written to the Postmasters at each of the mail servers on the Internet
which the SPAM mailers used to route their junk email. This has usually been
effective. But, it takes time and effort on my part. And it is not always
effective.
To try to help discourage junk emailers from attacking the forum I've posted the
new tagline notice. It puts SPAM emailers on notice that processing of such
SPAM will cost them $500 per SPAM message. It would be difficult to actually
collect $500 from SPAM emailers. But, the information I've read indicates this
is a legal charge which can be imposed. And, if a serious problem develops
someday with SPAM email being sent to the forum, then the fact that the notice
was posted in a highly visible manner should make it easier to fight the
SPAMer. My hope is that this notice will serve as a deterrent to help prevent
SPAM operators from disturbing the operations of the forum.
If you any comments, questions, or suggestions on this subject, send them to
me.

Several people have asked me what they should do with encoded attachments
received via e-mail. The easiest way for the recipient to handle attached files
is to use an Internet Service Provider and email program that automatically
handle the decoding such that the user doesn't even know its happening. Of
course none of this would be necessary if people would not send attachments.
If you're one of the lucky ones who use an Internet service and email program
which handle decoding automatically, then you can ignore this message. But, if
you are one of the less fortunate who must manually decode attached files, read
on.
There are several decoding programs you can download from the Internet. After
downloading, you must install and setup the decoder. You will have to study and
follow the installation instructions yourself.
Decoding programs can be found and downloaded from many sites on the Internet.
You will need to look or search for words like "Decode", "Encode", "UUdecode",
"MIME", "Email", "Attachments", etc. Here are a few locations where you should
find decoding programs and other useful software for downloading

>>>>>-FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION-<<<<<
I need help researching the ..... records for information about ..... Do you
have any suggestions how I should go about finding help?
>>>>>-RESPONSE-<<<<<
It is always possible that somebody has already published messages in one of the
many Rootsweb forums that might answer your question. If the answer has not
been published yet, a message may have been published that would give you better
insight about how and where to research further your topic.
1. With the above in mind, the first step I recommend is to search for the
particular name you want to research the archive databases at
http://searches.rootsweb.com/roots-l.search.html or http://searches.rootsweb.com
on Rootsweb.
2. The second step I suggest is to search the archives again for keywords in the
subject you want researched rather than the name. For example, assume you want
to research for someone buried at a Methodist Church in Sumter District, South
Carolina. Then you might try checking the archives for messages with keywords
like graveyard, methodist, church, sumter, south carolina, etc. You might also
want to try words like tombstone, headstone, cemetery, etc. Also, try common
spelling and mis-spelling variations.
3. After you review the information from your searches, publish a message in the
most appropriate Forum asking for volunteers to help you do lookups, research,
or whatever work is needed.
- In the message, explain as best you can exactly what you want. Many people
post vague requests with little more than a name. It is better to give some
details about the person and subject you want help with.
- Give them a good idea of the details you already have so that they don't waste
time doing work you don't need.
- Requests usually get better results when they are limited to one subject. A
request that asks for help with a long list of names is intimidating to some
people. Responding to requests takes time and effort. Ask for too much, you
may get none. Ask for a little and you may get more.
- Make sure the subject line is informative. Include things like name,
location, dates, and key words for the subject matter about which you are
requesting help. Many people only open messages if the subject line includes a
name, location, or topic that they are interested in. Also, many archive
searchers only look for key words in subject lines. So, think about what key
words somebody might be searching for weeks, months, or even years from now.
Would everyone researching the same thing you are find your message in the
archives?
4. If you don't get the response you feel you need, try publishing a similar
help request in a different Rootsweb Forum. Do not cross post messages to many
Forums. Cross posting is often considered SPAM when the message is sent to many
forums. So, it is best to carefully decide which are the best, most appropriate
forums where your request will be on-topic and welcomed. Send a single message
to the most appropriate forum. Wait a few days to see what kind of response it
gets. Then, if needed, send a single message to the next most appropriate
forum. Etc.
5. If you can afford it, and if it is worth it to you, then offering a reward
may get you more response. If you do this, make sure you are very clear about
the exact terms of your offer.
6. If you can, try visiting the locations where the information you want
researched exists and doing it personally.
7. If you don't get what you need from the above techniques, then it may be time
to seek the help of a paid professional researcher.
8. Others may have additional suggestions, tips, etc., that might be helpful.
So, consider sending a message to the forum asking for additional suggestions
about how to approach researching your subject.
In cleaning up the message databases I came across the one shown below. Looks
like it never made it into the forum. So, I'm forwarding a copy to the forum.

I've hit a lot of brick walls. Too many. One thing that sometimes helps, is to
take the last known date and locality - then figure out as many ways to misspell
the surname as you can. Then start digging for "maybes."
Good luck all,
John (http://members.tripod.com/jrburnett/index.html)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
One great site that I ran across the other day is the Bureau of Land
Management. It is located at: (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov) I spent at least
3 hours there the first time I visited. One word of caution. This site is
under construction and sometimes there is no information available yet. It is
still worth a look.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I have had a lot of people write me who are interested in their family history,
but don't know where to begin. A good place to start is to just start asking
your relatives, mother/father, grandma/grandpa, aunts/uncles, questions.
Questions like where their parents came from, when they were born/died, etc..
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
With Memorial Day just around the corner, a good place to visit is the
cemetery. On our latest trip to the cemetery, I was gathering dates and such
for cross referencing. My five year-old daughter was busy picking up hickory
nuts that had fallen to the ground from a near by tree, and placing them on what
would be her great-great grandpa's grave. I asked her what she was doing? She
replied, "I'm just picking up grandpa's nuts, dad." Anyway, a lot of
information can be gathered from a trip to the cemetery.

When messages are sent to email forums in RTF or HTML format, people on AOL
receiving the digests sometimes report unreadable messages. Usually the problem
reported is a red background or sometimes an apparently blank message. Until
AOL fixes these bugs in their email program making it more compatible with
common standards, AOL users may wish to try the methods given below to read
those messages. These methods have been reported by others. If you have
questions or need further assistance with this problem, please ask your AOL
technical support staff.
Work around solution #1.
1. Highlight the entire message.
2. Click on reply once. In the reply message window the message will still be
unreadable.
3. Click on the box with the A inside the blue square.
4. Click on the white background and then click on OK. The background will now
be white and the message may be read.
5. You can then either:
a. Complete the subject box and put your own e-mail address in the TO box and
click on send. It will come right back to you and you can then save it with
your other saved messages with the white background preserved.
b. Delete it when you are finished reading it.
Work around solution #2.
1. Bring down the file menu while looking at the unreadable message.
2. Click on save as, then select a name for your file and save it as a text
file.
3. Click on file open and open the saved text file.
4. Go through the procedure described above to change the background color.
5. When you close this file you will be asked if you wish to save the changes.
Click yes to save the background change. This procedure will save your
corrected file as a text file in your AOL download directory by default or
another folder if you so specify.
General Land Office Records (GLO) are now on the Internet allowing you to search
Federal Land Patent databases. At the GLO Web site you can query the databases
to access the automated historical data and view the electronic image of the
land patent.
This site provides live database and image access to more than two million
federal land title records for the Eastern Public Land States, dating back to
1820. This offers researchers a source of information on the initial transfer
of land titles from the federal government to individuals. In addition to
verifying title transfer, this information will allow the researcher to place an
individual (Patentee) at a specific location (Legal Land Description) in time
(Signature date).
Eastern States is the custodian of over five million Federal land title
documents. The GLO Records Automation Project staff has automated two million of
these records, ensuring the preservation of this vital component of American
heritage. The original documents are now stored in acid-free boxes and protected
in fireproof temperature-controlled vaults.
Patents were issued under various title-transfer authorities. You can download
copies of the Acts of Congress that authorized the issuance of land patents
under various programs. Some of these programs include the Cash Entry Act of

Thanks, I have made the corrections to my electronic copy of Jane's book.
It has been a good starting point for most questions for me. But like most
books there are errors, an no one should rely on every as fact. The old
saying, "Believe nothing you are told and half of what you read" Right.
If you have any more corrections I will make note.
THANK YOU,
Dwight Stipes

The James Coker who was in Cherokee Co. TX in 1850 was not James Giddings
Coker. This confusion has resulted from June Barekman's "Our Coker Kin".
James Giddings (Geddings) Coker did marry Sarah Armstrong, but they stayed
in TN. This James Coker in Cherokee was b.ca 1797 in Laurens SC and came
to Texas about 1846 with his brother, Joseph, who also lived in Cherokee Co
until 1853 when he moved his family to the San Antonio area.
I am a descendant of Joseph Coker. There were three brothers in this
family, John, James and Joseph. John never married and came to Texas in
1834. Joseph married Malinda Brown in Laurens ca 1820. James married Mary
?? around 1826, location unknown. When John died he left his land to
Joseph and James.
Sarah Jane Coker was a dau of this James Coker and the marriage information
is oorrect. They had 5 dau's and one son . Three of the daughters appear
to have married Nelson brothers. I do not have a marriage for the son,
William.
Let me know if I can help further.
