George Washington Coker m: Emma Cloud Poole (2) 12-22-1885, Lowndes Co.
This is my husband's great grandfather. History does repeat itself:
In 1957, Thos. Coker m: Maxine Meadows, 1960 Robert Coker m: Joan Virginia

Joy,
Tirzah Coker was the daughter of Richard Coker of Edgecombe Co., NC.
Richard was the son of James Coker, Sr and Mary____ and the grandson of
Caleb Coker who died in Edgecombe Co. in 1748.
The June 19, 1807 will of Richard Coker says "I also give to my well
beloved daughter, Terzah, and her lawful heirs begotten of her body a
negro woman named Selah and a negro girl named Mary". I do not know who
Tirzah married.
You said Frederick Hammond was bound to James Coker in 1793. James
Coker was either Tirzah's grandfather, James Sr., who died in 1796 or
her uncle James Coker.
Shadrack Hammond was bound to William Speir in 1760. William Spier was
a nephew to James Coker, Sr. William's mother had been Elizabeth Coker,
sister to James Sr.
My Coker line comes through Elizabeth Coker Speir.

Dear Dwight,
Here it is, I don't know what the L. stands for, nor do I know if
Pop had any sisters or brothers. Aunt tells me he came from NC
and family legend is that we are "Black Dutch", which I hear means
poor German, and my cousin heard we had Cherokee blood.
Lots of red hair and freckles for that!! 8-)
Homer married Dorothy Whitmore, from Gadsden, AL.
They had 5 children:

Joy this is Doug. Was your 'twin' message to me? I e-mailed you the long
one about my birthmom being the oldest of 4 kids, 2 of them twins all
born around the 1940's. Or are you looking for someone else you know
that has twin info? Anyways, hope all is well with you. Doug
Hi,
Can someone tell me if Tirzah Coker married into this Hammons family and who
were her Coker ancestors? Could she be the white woman that was listed in the
1800 NC census with the Hammons and what was their nationality?
Joy in GA
In the"Black Experience in Revolutionary North Carolina" p. 66, Hammons listed
as being "Mulattoes or Mustees having no African blood in them" The Hammon
family in VA in 1800 were listed as very light skinned and born free.
Ann Hammond b. ca 1720, had child when she was in service to MARY WILSON,
widow of Chowan County in July 1737. (Chowan minutes 1735-48, p. 73.)
Mary Hammond, born perhaps 1755, was living in Edgecombe Co., NC in 1779 when
the 25 May session of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions ordered her "base
begotten child, "Jordan Hammons, bound to Willis Hyatt. She may have been
related to Drummond Hammond, no race stated, who was 24 years old when his two
year apprenticeship agreement with Alexander Brodie was proved in the 15 March
1758 Edgecombe County Court.
Mary's children were:
1. Jordan, born perhaps 1767, no age stated when the court ordered him
bound. He was head of an Edgecombe County household of 4 "other free" in 1790
(NC:57), 4 in Chatham County in 1800, and 6 "free colored" in Chatham in 1820
(NC:211).
2. ?Frederick, b. ca 1778, "Mullato" ordered bound to Dempsey Odam by
the Edgecombe County Court on 24 July 1787, no parent named. He was removed
from Odam's care and ordered bound to JAMES COKER by the May 1793 Edgecombe
Court. He married Nancy Pettiford, 19 May 1802 Granville County bond with
George Anderson bondsman.
Shadrack Hammond, born perhaps 1757, was "a free Mulatto boy" ordered bound to
WILLIAM SPEIR by the November 1760 Edgecombe Co., Court. He was head of an
Edgecombe Co. household of 8 "other free" in 1790 (NC:57), 9 "other free" and
1 white woman in 1800 (NC:209), 8 "other free" in 1810 (NC:748) and 6 "free
colored" in 1820 (NC:126).
Shadrack Hammond had son named James Hammons.
Info I have says that Tirzah Coker m. James Hammons. Also deed book 16-32,
bill of sale, May 22, 1817 lists Tirzah Coker & James Hammons. Who is Tirzah?

Does anyone have any information on Cokers who settled in the Navasota
River bottoms of Robertson, Limestone, and VanZant counties in Texas after
the Civil War. Some names are: William Green Coker, G.W. Coker, Berry and
Perry Coker (twins?), and Orlando Coker (or William Orlando Coker). Some
of the Cokers married women from the Hodges family. They supposedly all
came from Alabama, and William Green Coker was reportedly in the
Confederate Army. I would appreciate any and all information on these
Cokers. - - Steve Lowe

Hi,
I came across this from an old Genealoy Magazine-Journial though some might
enjoy.
A DESPRATE DUEL- ALACHUA, COUNTY, FLORIDA
>From the files of Judge Huxford, Savannah Morning News June 26, 1854
A desperate duel took place at Newnansville, East Fla., between Claudius C.
Stewart and Jos. B. Coker, both young lawyers. It seems that Stewart had
confidenced Coker with his intended marriage to a young lady and had asked
Coker to be one of his groomsmen, and Coker had disclosed the news to
others, and incensed Stewart who demanded that Coker sign a libel
acknowledgment or either fight a duel. The two went over into Georgia,
armed with shot-guns, double-barrel. Stewart's gun loaded with 3-0
buck-shot, and Coker's with three ball chambers loaded with twelve bullets.
They were to fire first shot at a distance of 75 yards, and if no one was
hit, then to advance 10 paces and fire again, and if not hit to reload and
advance ten more paces. At the first shot Stewart received three balls, two
of them in his left arm and shoulder rendering it necessary to be
amputated. The other ball entered his right breast and lodged in his right
shoulder. Fear was felt for his life on account of the great loss of blood,
there being no physicians under twenty miles with instruments necessary to
amputate the arm. Coker was hit by two buckshot which passed through the
breast of his loose garment which he wore. (Not verbatim)

Well Joy now it's my turn. You mentioned twins, lotsa twins in the Coker
line. I am an adoptee born 1-27-62. Birthmom was from Tennessee and she
was born 1943, was 19 when I was given up. She was among 4 sibs 2 or
them twins. She was the oldest of all 4. Her grandfather was a merchant
marine. Any idea of a set of twins in a family of 4 kids born in the
1940's? I also have Chickashaw Indian, Eng, Irish, German in me. Thanks.
Doug
Cuzzin Joy, we'uns got a feud abrewin'? I'm asaddlin' the mule and

Rick, the recluse.
I can tell you that a G.W. Coker (George Washington) and a Green Coker where
in Washington county, AL in 1830 and 1840. Do you have any more info on
Green? I suspect he was a son of Dempsey Coker of Washington County,AL Joy
in AL

Doug,
Have you been able to have adoption records opened? Your history really
interests me since we do have so many twins and one set of triplets in our
line. I also have a great uncle who went to Charleston to work in the
shipyards because of relatives there, but as of now I do not know who the
relatives were. My grandfather told someone that we were related to the
Cokers in TN...........wish I had asked more questions when I had the chance.
Do you have any names? Or the section of TN that he came from? Since some of
these people may still be alive, send me the names you have on private email
and I'll see if I can find out anything. Have you tried newspaper records,
they are a pretty good source for some later info and most libraries have a
periodical section on microfilm now. Check birth announcements, funerals for
descendants, marriages for guests, and even the society pages for a certain
area if it is small can give you a lot of information as to what area Cokers
were in at that time.
Do you have the household phone book cd for TN? You can get addresses for
Cokers there....make you out a form letter of sorts stating your situation and
cross your fingers, you would be surprised how often you will pick up a lead
that way. Also, you will have a better chance of getting answers if you only
ask a couple of questions at a time and always enclose a self-addressed
stamped envelope. Be sure and keep a record of whom you have contacted as
this can get a little costly if you send duplicates to the same families.
Also check any Coker lineage books that you can find at local libraries as
some people that have been doing research will list when there was an
adoption.
Where did your German lineage come in, from your Coker family? What part of
the country are you living in now? Send me what info you have and we are only
about an hour from TN so will see what I can do.
Joy in GA

I am new to this list and have been lurking. I am a Coker,
my grandfather was Homer L. Coker, from Tarrant City, AL.
