The Coil family of Mercer County, Ohio have an Irish surname, but we are actually from Germany. Valentine Geil came to Philadelphia Sep. 15 1749 on the ship Edinburgh. Because we had a very heavy accent, and illiteracy played a part, I have found nearly twenty ways our name was spelled on census records, real estate sales, tax records, etc. In West Virginia the name is spelled Kile, in Texas it is spelled Kyle, and there are relatives who spell it Coyle. I communicate with Jack Kyle of Texas on a regular basis. Many of our relatives live in the Franklin, West Virginia area. That is Pendleton County, West Virginia. We are all German. There were so many Germans who settled in the mountains of Virginia (now West Virginia) that a valley near Franklin that is still called Germany Valley.
