OOps!! I meant to say that Thomas Sherman was born in the early 1870s.
I have been able to garner a lot of information about the families of Marshall, Thomas and Henry. If you send you address to me, I will send you copies.
My E-Mail address is pgroovy(a)cox.net.

Christina, so good to hear from you. It is so exciting to learn that Stephen and Rebecca (Frost) Coil may have had a daughter that I knew nothing about.
Marshall Francis Coil was born in the 1870s in Missouri. He married a woman who was born in Michigan. Marshall moved to California by 1930.
Thomas Sherman was born in 1882. Henry was born in the early 1700s, so none of them could have been the father of Mary Belle. So that leaves Stephen as the most probable father.
You are so fortunate to have family members to talk to about the family history.
Look foward to hearing from you.

Hi Pam, Sorry it has taken awhile for me to get back with you. I have been trying to find out somemore info from my mom and she finally gave me my cousins phone number and I called her because she was doing a family tree a few years ago and while I was talking to her, she had also mentioned the names of James Riley, Stephen Coil, Rebecca Frost, Marshall Francis and Thomas Sherman. We don't know if maybe Stephen and Rebecca could be Marys parents or if maybe it was Marshall. I know that Marys parents were born in KY. but that is all that I could find out right now. My cousin is going to talk with our Uncle Tony (who is in his 90s) to see if she can come up with anything new.

I did a little checking and see that you found the parents of Forrest Yvonne Coil. I am always interested in Coil families, but mine come from Virginia to Kentucky and then on to St. Louis.

Christina, I found your post very interesting, especially since on the 1910 Wayne Co., MI Census, Mary Belle (Coil) Sutton is living 4 houses down from my grandfather, James Riley Coil. James Riley Coil was born in Clinton Co., KY, but he was married and lived in St. Louis, Missouri. I know that his parents lived in St. Louis in 1885 and 1890. I don't know where they died, however. I have found no record of their deaths.
Their names were Stephen Coil and Rebecca Frost.
The name Francis was the second given name of a brother of James Riley Coil - Marshall Francis Coil.
Did you find the SS Death Record for Mary B. Sutton?? You can send for it and it may anxwer your question about Mary Belle's parentage.
Stephen and Rebecca had a son, Thomas Sherman, born in 1882 and a stillborn child born in 1885 in St. Louis.
My father, Sylvester Eugene Riley Coil, was born in 1912 in Detroit. He died when I was 2 years old and my mother, sister and I moved to Miami, FL so I never got to know my father's family very well.
Hope that this note is encouraging to you. Hope to hear back from you soon.

Christina,
There are some things you can do if no one has helped you or if you have not already done them. Some that might help you the most are
1. Get the death certificate for Mary Belle Sutton. It will likely list her parents' names as well as the state they were from.
2. Look at the probate records for the Missouri county that she was in when she was a ward of William Smith. An http://www.familysearch.org library catalog search may show that they have microfilm of the records for the time period you are interested in. You can order it and look at it at a Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints facility near you. If you don't know where one is, you can probably find the location of ones in your state by searching on the same familysearch.org website, googling, or asking your local library reference desk or historical society.
3. The census will tell you how Mary Belle is related to the head of household, if she is. Does it say that she his relative? Or is she William's wife's relative?
4. Were the Coil families in the same county or an adjacent one in 1880.
5. Was there a Coil veteran listed in the 1890 Veteran's schedule? You probably cannot find an 1890 federal census, as most of this census burned.
6. Are there Coil families listed in the state tax records. There would likely be a tax record for each year by county.
7. Were there Coils in the same county, or an adjacent one, who patented land or purchased it prior to 1900?
There are other things you can do also, but these have the potential to help you most in finding out who her parents were. These also assume, which may not be the case, that since she was born in Missouri, she lived there when her parents died or one of them gave her into the care of others and she went into the household of William Smith.
I hope if you have not already tried these suggestions, that they help you break through your genealogical stone wall.
I can sympathize with your plight. I also have a female Coil ancestor, who married Thomas J. Crail (b. 1811 KY). I have seen a first name for her, but do not know if it is really hers or if someone thought that the 2nd wife's first name was hers. Anyhow, I am not having any luck with my female Coil ancestor either.
Lee Anne
