Can anyone help me find Genevieve?
I've reached a dead-end looking for this elusive woman.... My Great-grandfather died very early, and so did his son (my grandfather). I'm trying to track down this family without the benefit of my elders. I know absolutely no one in this family at all, so if you think you might be related, send a message and let's look. :)
Ultimately, I'm looking for records of my great-grandmother Genevieve.
Family legend says that after her husband Mihail/Michael Cohen/Cole (b 1887, Vilna Russia to Morris Cohn and Tillie Shapiro) died in 1936, the eldest son Lawrence (b 1914-1916) was married to Sophie Schwartz in Ohio. I don't know what happened to them, except some vague statement of that family living somewhere in the northeast.
After this, Genevieve took her remaining son Bertram from Ohio to California. She lived the rest of her life there, and died in California before my parents even met each other.
I've pieced together what I can, and am hoping that someone will recognize this and help me out. Census reports and death certificates all give her name as "J Genevieve" or "Jean G". My guess is that her name was "Jean Genevieve", but I don't have any documentation that has both names. She was born between 1896-1898 in New York. I'm guessing Buffalo or thereabouts. She was married somewhere around 1914-1916. Her first child Lawrence L Cohen was born in Buffalo NY around this time. Between the birth of this child and the 1920 census, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio and the second son Bertram was born around 1921. The family name was then changed from Cohen/Cohn to Cole between 1920 and 1930.
Census reports also say her family was German or Polish, although family legend says she was "French", but I have no proof of this.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, please reply to this thread, or message me on ancestry. Thanks in advance for your time and help!
Cheers!
